Disasters have always been a result of human interaction with
nature, technologyand other living entities. Sometimes they are unpredictable and sudden, while some other times they are slow andlingering.Various types of disasters continually affect the way in which we live ourdaily lives. According to the various sources, 87% of Indonesian areas arenatural disaster prone regions, or of 440 Urban/regency territories 383 out of them are natural disaster prone regions. The natural disaster such as earthquake, tsunami, volcano eruption, hurricane, flood and landslide may occur to Indonesian people whenever and whereverthey are. As mentioned above, the fact that Indonesia has a high risk to natural disaster makes it in need of good natural disaster management which offers applied knowledge in prevention, mitigation, readiness and preparedness, risk-reduction and post-disaster recovery.Besides, appropriate management in natural disaster could minimize the impacts which always come together with the disasters. The ratio of victims and the disadvantages couldalso be reduced, or even avoided. Those all are the reasons why study about natural disaster management now becomes unavoidable. According to my point of view, the study of natural disaster management is not only a need but also a must, for by reducing risks and minimizing the disadvantages caused by natural disasters we could save many people lives as well as the environment and nature. Furthermore, Disaster Management focuses on creating and implementing preparedness and others plans to decrease the impact of disasters and build back better. Failure to create/apply a plan could result in damage to life, assets and even losing your own very life. However, a continuous and integrated process of planning, organising, coordinating and implementing measures which are necessary or expedient for the following: 1) Prevention of danger or threat of any disaster, 2) Mitigation or reduction of risk of any disaster or its severity or consequences, 3) Capacity-building, 4) Preparedness to deal with any disaster, 5) Prompt response to any threatening disaster situation or disaster, 6) Assessing the severity or magnitude of effects of any disaster 7) Evacuation, rescue and relief, and 8) Rehabilitation and reconstruction.
Of many problems faced by Indonesian people, the problems caused by lack
of knowledge and understanding about what is natural disaster, how to anticipate and encounter it, how it risks and impacts their lives, and who would take the responsibility now become very serious regarding the risks and impacts Indonesian people can get without having good disaster management. This is what callsmyself to make a real contribution to solve this bold public problem. Supported by my knowledge in science which Ive learnt a lot in the department of Biology UNJ, I hope I could sharpen, enlarge, and integrate it with what I would learn in the program of natural disaster management so that I would have more integrated-applied knowledge that is useful for the broad society, as well as generally for the development of this country. In the end of this study about natural disaster management, I also expect that the students are finally capable to understand more and deeper about conflicts and recent issues which are up to date to the topic of natural disaster and are able to apply the research they are done in the real practical situation. It is important for scholars to not only be able to publish their researches but also give a real valuable output for many aspects in life. Finally, my expectation if I am welcomed to be a part of this program is that I could in future be pioneer in disaster management, as well as in creating innovations and contributions to natural disaster policies.
