Story: The Man Who Acted As the Sun
Grade: 3

Lesson Objective(s): What will you be teaching?


Students will learn about fables and folk tales and how to retell those stories.
Students will learn about the lesson or moral in stories and be able to explain what it is.
Assessment (Traditional/Authentic): How will you know students have learned the content?
Standards: RL.3.2 - Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from diverse cultures;
determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key
details in the text.
RL.2.2 - Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their
central message, lesson, or moral.
RL.4.2 - Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the
text.

What to Gain/Maintain Attention (Primacy): How will you gain and maintain students
attention? Consider need, novelty, meaning, or emotion.
A picture that goes with the story displayed on the board (novelty).

Content Chunks: How will you divide and teach the content to engage students brains?

Lesson Segment 1: Using Storytelling to tell the story to the students and introduce it to the
students.
Activity: Storytelling
Lesson Segment 2: Discussion about the lesson or moral of a story, give examples on the board.
Write what the students say the moral of this story is on the board (many of them, not just one
final answer)
Activity: Brainstorming/Discussion
Lesson Segment 3: Pass out Worksheet (attached). Explain it to students, and have them pick one
of the morals we have written on the board (or choose their own) to complete the worksheet.
