Passage:
Today, human beings control the Earth. Millions of years ago, before humans
existed, dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Their fossils have been found all over the world.
They ruled the Earth for 160 million years. That is much longer than people have
been here.
Dinosaurs became extinct long before humans existed. Humans and dinosaurs
never lived at the same time. Dinosaurs ruled the Earth until an unknown
catastrophic event made them extinct.
1

1 catastrophic: a sudden disaster

Many scientists believe that a very long time ago, all of the continents were one. As
time went by, the continents drifted apart. This explains why dinosaur fossils can be
found all over the world. The weather was warmer and more stable than it is today.
The temperature would barely rise or fall throughout the year. Therefore, there were
no seasons.
Dinosaurs were not alone on the planet. Small mammals and birds existed. There
were many reptiles, such as crocodiles and lizards, roaming about. Some fish,
sharks, and shellfish were living as well. The Earth had many plants. There was
plenty of food to go around and the Earths creatures maintained a balanced food
chain.
No one is sure why the dinosaurs became extinct. There are many theories, but none have
been proven.

Dear 3rd graders,

I have to leave on a trip and I need someone to look after the dinosaurs I

rescued from the meteor that wiped out all their friends! They are alone and

afraid and need your help! I've put each dinosaur in its own cage for safe keeping,

but they will need a home very soon! They need families who will love and care

for them! Each dinosaur is very special and has its own story to tell, it is up to you

to tell their stories!

Your teacher told me that you were studying about dinosaurs at school. I need

your class to help write about each of my dinosaurs. I've got quite a collection of

these critters, and theres one for each of you! Please help them find new homes!

12
Ive heard you are the experts on dinosaurs and know all about them! Each of

the dinosaurs needs to be advertised on a Dino-Flyer as soon as possible, so that

we can find them wonderful homes! Dont forget to feed them! See you in a

week!

Love,

Dinah Sorh

Each of you has been given a dino-pet for a week! First, using the prefixes and

suffixes we learned earlier, you will create your perfect dino-pet! You will choose its

name, then based off of the name, you will make a DINO-FLYER advertising your

dinosaur. You will need to include:

The name of the dinosaur

What its name means
A picture of your dinosaur
*BE SURE TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THE NAME MEANS WHEN

CREATING YOUR PICTURE

If it is an Omnivore, Herbivore or Carnivore and its favorite food.
Its special adaptations
And what makes it unique!

On the back of the flyer you will answer the following questions:
1. What is the dinosaurs name?
2. What does the name mean?
3. Does the dinosaur eat plants, meat, or both plants and meat?
4. How long or tall is your dinosaur?
5. Describe its teeth.
