Cerberus v11.5 Software Enhancements

Achilles / String Editor

In addition to the pre-existing non-linear approach to fatigue life modeling, an optional new fatigue
model (Achilles 5.0) provides a linear calculation approach to determine the number of cycles to
failure.
Both Achilles and the Cerberus String Editor have been modified to allow the selection of
the Fatigue Model when performing calculations or analyses.

Reel-Trak / String Editor

An improved fatigue diagram uses available graphics hardware to reduce computer processor
usage and increase performance.
The fatigue diagram now supports adding annotations, or markups, from within String Editor and
Reel-Trak. Annotations can be created (and optionally printed) for specific actions in the string
history or permanently shown for the entire life of the string.
In String Editor and Reel-Trak (wherever the string profile is visible), a new limit line (MRR
Manufacturers Recommended Replacement) is visible on the fatigue profile of the string.

Reel-Trak
In previous versions of Cerberus, all data logged through OrionNET and used for fatigue
calculations in Reel-Trak was transferred to Reel-Trak and stored. However, when OrionNET data
files were imported into Reel-Trak post-job, the data would be filtered to exclude all but that
required for the fatigue calculation (based on customizable filter options such as inflection points,
pressure changes, and depth sensitivity). This post-job data-filtering is preferable for many reasons,
including its reduction in a jobs file-size and increased data quality. The new option in Reel-Trak
provides for the saving of only the critical data needed for fatigue and running feet calculations
during real-time operations, thus providing real-time processing the same benefits as post-job
processing.
A post-job analysis plot of weight by depth is now included in Reel-Trak.

String Editor
In version 11.0 of Cerberus, NOV CTES introduced an automated process for recalculating a CT
strings fatigue history when an event in the strings life was omitted or incorrect (for example,
when a cut was not recorded between two jobs in the string history). In version 11.5, this
capability is expanded to allow for automated recalculation of the entire string history when a
string-design change is needed.
The String Configuration Wizard now uses the default material specified in the preferences in the
String Editor.
Wall thickness values can now be manually entered in the String Configuration Wizard if they do
not appear in the list of default values.
Job Wizard
The Job Wizard now provides the ability to display and select a folder for the job from the New Job
step, unlike previous version, in which jobs created using the Job Wizard were always saved to the
Coiled Tubing Projects folder.

Orpheus
A new, improved algorithm is used by Lockup Model 2 to enhance calculation stability and
accuracy. The new calculation starts from a theoretical maximum set-down force (as predicted by
Lockup Model 1) and then evaluates the force transfer rate for data pairs of set-down force and
surface weight (apart from the theoretical maximum set-down force). Comparison testing
(between the new and old model) resulted in the following:
The new algorithm is more stable and is able to produce valid results in cases where
the old algorithm failed.
The new algorithm is considerably faster than the old algorithm. In seven test projects,
calculation time of the new algorithm was 25-50% of the old algorithm.
Lockup surface weight predicted by the new algorithm can (sometimes) be less
conservative than that predicted by the old algorithm in horizontal or highly deviated
well sections. In such situations, force transfer rate at maximum set-down force can be
verified with the Run at Depth calculation for the new algorithm. With the old
algorithm, however, the force transfer rate at maximum set-down force estimated
from the Run at Depth window would be higher than the pre-defined threshold. This
verifies that the new algorithm is more accurate than the old algorithm.
A procedure that is widely used in the field to determine the tubing stuck depth has been
added to the Orpheus Stuck Point Wizard. The procedure, referred to as pulling up, uses two
pulling-weight values and depth change to estimate the tubing stuck depth. The procedure
used by previous Cerberus versions is still available in Orpheus and is referred to as slacking
off.
The von Mises stress calculation has been improved so that, for a tubing section, stresses near
the inner wall and outer wall at both extrados and intrados, respectively, are calculated and
the maximum is used as the maximum von Mises stress on the tubing section.
In previous versions of Cerberus, only micro-tortuosity was included in forces calculations.
With version 11.5, the user has the option of calculating either macro-tortuosity or micro-
tortuosity in Orpheus.
Flow-by area modeling in Orpheus jointed pipe mode now available.
Additional well information is now included in Orpheus printouts.
A new report has been added to Orpheus Wireline mode to provide a Winch Operators
Notes printout for use at the well head.
The automatic report in Orpheus has been updated to include additional information for
available pick-up and set-down weight (CT) / available overpull (Wireline).
Orpheus has been modified to display the toolstring at the end of a coiled tubing or jointed
pipe when the string data is viewed.
Orpheus now has the option to simulate a toolstring being inserted into a well.

The message pertaining to the Orpheus calculation of maximum depth wherein a
toolstring/BHA can reach and can be pulled has been improved to return more specific
information.
When a new CT/Wireline/Jointed Pipe, Well, or BHA is created from the Orpheus Wizard, the
project name is now used as the default name.
The form drag calculation in Orpheus has been improved such that when fluid flows past a
change in tool diameter, the larger tool diameter is used in the calculation.
Orpheus now uses a new algorithm that always calculates wellbore hydraulics in the order of
fluid-flow direction, though with iteration. The new algorithm results in more accurate
pressure profiles and form drag calculations (based on acceleration pressure).
Orpheus has been improved to better depict when an input varies on the calculation tab.
Orpheus has been updated to include the Well Inclination in the Sinker Bar energy calculation
results.
Orpheus has been modified to use pipe heavy/pipe light when importing field data for the
friction wizard if no weight channel is found and pipe heavy/light are available.
Orpheus has been improved to support customizing the default curve names for results on
data plots and tables.
The Orpheus Project Wizard has been updated to allow the creation of a new fluid directly
from the wizard.
Orpheus has been updated to include an optional Auto-Save feature that automatically saves
inputs as changes are made.
Orpheus printouts now include additional Well information defined in the Well Editor:
Operator, Field, Location, County, State, and Country.

Hydra
The Reservoir View in Hydra has been updated to graphically indicate the fluid-flow direction based
on the projects pressure differential. In previous versions there was no indication of flow direction
on the diagram.

Tool Editor
The tool string printout now lists the cumulative length for each section in the tool string as well as
the Measure Point if same is defined on a tool within the Tool Editor.
When changing a tool in a tool box, the Tool Editor now allows additional flexibility when selecting
which tool strings to update.

Tool String Editor

The ability to import or export a tool box has been added to the Tool String Editor interface,
providing a simple and effective way to share tool boxes with collaborators.

General Enhancements
The Import/Export utilitys design includes a new interface, which provides the user with complete
control over the selection process of elements to import/export. The new file-type, with the .ZCY
extension, is email-safe due to its use of an XML format that can pass all email filtering. To provide
backward compatibility, the user can select to export a .ZCX file that can be imported in previous
versions of Cerberus.

Fluid selection in all Cerberus applications has been improved to use a new selection window.
CT Specifications has been modified to display Torsional Yield in the Tubing Specifications section.
The Units Conversion utility, available from the Utilities menu in Cerberus, has been updated to
include conversions for all the units used in Cerberus.
The Force Monitor (real time) has been modified to use pipe heavy/pipe light when importing field
data if no weight channel is found and pipe heavy/light are available.
Well Editor has been improved to support multiple bridge plugs in the wellbore.

Cerberus v11.5 is 64-bit compatible and supports the Windows 7

and Windows 8 operating systems using .NET Framework 4.0
