Administrating an Intramuscular Injection

Alan Rosas: Hi! My name is Alan. I am going to demonstrate how to properly administer
an intramuscular injection. First, the materials required for this demonstration include the
following: a syringe, a needle, the injection solution, a sharps container, a cotton swab, a
disinfectant, a dog, and an assistant. Then, have the dog standing on all fours and the
assistant restraining the patient and being instructed during the injection. Prepare the
syringe by drawing up the calculated amount of the injection solution from its rubber top.
Here Ill use 3 ml of the injection solution. Before attaching the needle, remove the air
bubbles by flicking the syringe . The assistant must grab the hind leg on the opposite side
with their free hand and have the thumb parallel to the sciatic nerve located here. On the
left side of their hand is a pocket-like muscle called the biceps femoris where the needle
is to be injected. Insert the needle perpendicular to the skin in the biceps femoris.
Aspirate to ensure a blood vessel has not been penetrated. Secure the bottom of the
needle and inject the solution slowly. Afterwards, remove the needle and syringe
smoothly and quickly. Finally, dispose the needle with the cap on into a sharps container.
So, that is how you administer an intramuscular injection.
