Popular sports in Serbia are: football, basketball, water polo,
volleyball, handball and tenis. Serbia hosted the Summer University 2009, World Cup in water sports 1973, European championships in football, basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, gymnastics, judo, wrestiling, rowing... Every year Belgrade marathon and bicycle race are organized in Serbia. The most famous sports clubs in Serbia are JSD Partizan and Crvena Zvezda.
*BASKETBALL*
The main organization in charge of basketball in Serbia is the
Serbian Basketball Association.
Greatest contribution to the development of basketball in Serbia
and Jugoslavia is considered to be made by a player and coach Aleksandar Nikoli. Due to his merit he got the nickname Father of the Jugoslav basketball. The most successful Serbian basketball coaches are: Duan Ivkovi, Svetislav Pei and eljko Obradovi. The most famous players are: Radivoj Kora, Dragan Kianovi, Vlade Divac, Dejan Bodiroga, Aleksandar orevi and Predrag Stojakovi.
The awards for the most valuable players at the world
championships were given to Kianovi (1974), Dalipagi (1978) and Bodiroga (1998), and at the European to Kora (1961), Dalipagi (1977), Kianovi (1981), orevi (1997) and Stojakovi (2001).
Three finals of the European championships in basketball were
held in Serbia in 2005.
Serbian players who have been declared the best European
basketball players are Draen Dalipovi, Dragan Kianovi, Vlade Divac, Aleksandar orevi, Predrag Danilovi, Predrag Stojakovi and Milo Teodosi.
In the first basketball league the most decorated clubs are
Partizan with 19 medals, and Crvena Zvezda with 15 medals. Partizan is the most awarded in the National Cup, called the Kora Cup. By Valentina Demirovski
