Large Area Lighting
llluminating expansive sites, such as the area around a sta
dium or the parking lot of an urban mall, requires efficient light
that does not detract from the design elements of the project.
Because Lithonia Architectural Outdoor is a division of the
largest lighting company in the country, we had the resources
and commitment to develop a luminaire combining these
characteristics. The IWS Serles fulfills the specifiers' need for
both performance and aesthetics. There are two housing sizes,
both crisply detailed squares, so correct scale to mounting
height and location can be maintained.
Light emitted above 70" is non-productive and uncomfortably
distracting. A true cutoff reflector like the KVS attenuates glare
for maximum visibility. Light emitted from 55'70" strikes the
pavement at a midpoint between the poles. The KVS directs
light in these angles to achieve maximum spacing. In the crit
ical uniformity zone, the precision-hydroformed KVS reflector
delivers proper candlepower-to-angle gradient ratio, ensuring
uniform pavement luminance.

Lithonia Architectural Outdoor filled the void in large area
light'ng by introducing the KVS Series. Just because a fix
ture is destined for 20' to 60' mounting heights, it should
not be excused from an appearance judgement. Aesthetics
was a major criterion in designing the KVS. We would not
accept exposed rivets, overlapped seams or open gaps be
tween housinq panels.
Both sizes of KVS fixtures may be mounted in single or twin
configurations. The new small KVS I olfers four reflector
choices up to 150W in high pressure sodium and 250W in
metal halide. The larger KVS3 is used for 400- 1000W
applications. Dark bronze TCIC polyester powder linish
is standard with nine other environment oriented coiors
available.
Broad open spaces demancl the most eflicient use ot energy
with maximum polc spacings to obtain acceptable lillht
levels. Both versions of the KVS olfer unique solutions to
this challenge.
A choice of four reflecLors IES Type ll. Type lll, Type lV or
I ype V Cutoff is provid--d by the KVS /. The lighting designer
has unsurpassed flexibility to accomplish the maximum
efficiency goal. KVSl with thc Typc V Symmctric reflector
(KyS 1 R5) is the perfecL choice where lower mounting heights
are required, and excellent unifurmity is desired. There is no
lonqer a need to accept hiqh unilormity ratios when mounting

he optical system utilized by the KV.S3 was developed only
atter exhaustive photometric research. I ligh pressur-- sodiurn,
the most efficient HID source, was the focus of the eftort. HPS
lamps age by drawing inqreasingiy highcr voltage from
the ballast. However. an improperly designed reflector can
prematurely age HPS larnps by allowing light to be redirected
back into the arc tube. I his is so critical. limits for maxinrum
arc tube voltage rlse have been established by ANSI. T he KVS3
falls wcll within thcsc tolcratcd limits. Mctal halide lamps. with
their conrpact arc tubes, achieve superior pcrformance in the
lully fluted reflector. An added benefit of the Arc-Tek fluting:

KVS3 Optics Computer designed, fully fluted reflector
provides IES Type V Symmetric Cutoff distribution. Meets
ANSI specification #C78 1352. Contoured 3r'16" ternpered
glass lens (ANSI S97.1 ) allows maximum transmission of high
angle light.
Ballast/Electrical Sysfem Constantwattage autotransformer
ballast, l0O% copper wound and factory tested for reliable
operation. Removable unitized power door for ease of instal
lation or servicing of electrical components. Positive locking
disconnect plugs on primary and secondary circuits.
Finlsh Dark bronze TCIC polyester powder electrostatica lly
applied and oven cured is standard. Nine other arciritectural
colors available.
