Socio-Economic Status

Socioeconomic status (SES) is an economic and sociological


combined total measure of a person's work experience and of
an individual's or family's economic and social position in
relation to others, based on income, education, and
occupation. When analyzing a family's SES, the household
income, earners' education, and occupation are examined, as
well as combined income, whereas for an individual's SES only
their own attributes are assessed. However, SES is more
commonly used to depict an economic difference in society as
a whole.

Socioeconomic status is typically broken into three levels (high, middle, and low) to describe the three
areas a family or an individual may fall into. When placing a family or individual into one of these
categories, any or all of the three variables (income, education, and occupation) can be assessed.

This links to which category the target audience is in. They would be on medium income and probably
be a single mum which is why they buy this magazine.

Psychographics

Psychographics is the study of personality, values, opinions,


attitudes, interests, and lifestyles. Because this area of research
focuses on interests, attitudes, and opinions, psychographic
factors are also called IAO variables. Psychographic studies of
individuals or communities can be valuable in the fields of
marketing, demographics, opinion research, prediction, and social
research in general. They can be contrasted with demographic
variables (such as age and gender), behavioral variables (such as
usage rate or loyalty), and organizational demographics variables
(sometimes called firmographic variables), such as industry,
number of employees, and functional area.

Psychographics is often confused with demographics, where historical generations may be defined
both by demographics, such as the years in which a particular generation is born or even the fertility
rates of that generation's parents, but also by psychographic variables like attitudes, personality
formation, and cultural touchstones. For example, the traditional approaches to defining the Baby
Boom Generation or Generation X or Millennials have relied on both demographic variables
(classifying individuals based on birth years) and psychographic variables (such as beliefs, attitudes,
values and behaviors).

Geo-Demographics

Geodemographics is the study of the population and


its characteristics, divided according to regions on a
geographical basis. This involves application of
clustering techniques to group statistically similar neighbourhood and areas. The main source of data
for this study is the census. However, periodicity of census data being high, other sources like country
court judgements, property valuation and household council tax bands data are also used.

Buyers are all over the world.

Age

The film industry is interested in studying the


tastes and opinions of actual audiences through
empirical studies, such as surveys, focus groups,
and interviews. Because the film industry is a
moneymaking enterprise, it remains successful
only by producing films that make a profit over
and above their (increasingly sizable) budget
and marketing costs. The industry needs to bring in as many viewers as possible and therefore must
keep close tabs on what types of stories will appeal to the greatest number of viewers at any given
moment. The industry cannot afford to bank on hypothetical concepts of the film viewer but must
seek out real audiences, both through research and through marketing in order to ensure that
financial investments pay off. However, audiences shift over time in accordance with cultural tastes
and trends.

Gender

In light of the record-breaking opening of the female-led


action film Hunger Games: Catching Fire this past
weekend, the New York Film Academy decided to take a
closer look at women in film and what, if any,
advancements women are making. After reviewing the
data, it is clear that Hollywood remains stuck in its gender
bias. Of course, its not all disparaging news and there are
a number of female filmmakers, characters, and
emerging talent challenging the status quo. In addition, in the independent sphere, women made up
roughly half of the directors at this years Sundance Film Festival, yet still struggle when it comes to
films receiving a wide release. By shedding light on gender inequality in film, we hope to start a
discussion about what can be done to increase womens exposure and power in big-budget films.

Sexual Orientation

Sexual attraction is attraction on the basis of sexual desire or


the quality of arousing such interest. Sexual attractiveness or
sex appeal is an individual's ability to attract the sexual or
erotic interest of another person, and is a factor in sexual
selection or mate choice. The attraction can be to the
physical or other qualities or traits of a person, or to such
qualities in the context where they appear. The attraction
may be to a person's aesthetics or movements or to their
voice or smell, besides other factors. The attraction may be
enhanced by a person's adornments, clothing, perfume or style. It can be influenced by individual
genetic, psychological, or cultural factors, or to other, more amorphous qualities. Sexual attraction is
also a response to another person that depends on a combination of the person possessing the traits
and on the criteria of the person who is attracted.

Though attempts have been made to devise objective criteria of sexual attractiveness and measure it
as one of several bodily forms of ca pital asset (see erotic capital), a person's sexual attractiveness is
to a large extent a subjective measure dependent on another person's interest, perception, and sexual
orientation. For example, a gay or lesbian person would typically find a person of the same sex to be
more attractive than one of the other sex. A bisexual person would find either sex to be attractive.
Asexuality refers to those who do not experience sexual attraction for either sex, though they may
have romantic attraction (homoromantic, biromantic or heteroromantic) and/or a non-directed libido.
Interpersonal attraction includes factors such as physical or psychological similarity, familiarity or
possessing a preponderance of common or familiar features,
similarity, complementarity, reciprocal liking, and reinforcement.

The ability of a person's physical and other qualities to create a


sexual interest in others is the basis of their use in advertising,
film, and other visual media, as well as in modeling and other
occupations.

Regional Identity

A sense of belonging and patriotism is important to many people,


not only for their country but their town or city. Captain America
represents the American people capable to do anything, having a
hero from your home makes you proud. Batman is said to be the
worlds interpretation on America, cold and dark but
Superman is Americas thoughts on itself, light and
powerful.

Mainstream

Audiences follow trends and identifying these can


generate a successful production. Recently Marvel has
produced several superhero films and all have been well
received and are still in demand. A few years ago zombie
and vampire films were in the public demand and by finding the next
trend, shows can be generated with popular demand.

Alternative

Producers may have a concept and after testing it with a focus group
have found that it may appeal to a new market with a few changes.
Trial runs are important and can make the idea more likely to succeed
when it comes to the broadcast. The Big Bang Theory originally had a
different actress playing the
role of Penny, which after
being shown to a focus group was swapped for Kaley Cuoco.

Niche

Some productions are aimed at a specific market and so


understanding the audiences likes and dislikes is even more
important. This c overs all o f the topics above to know the audience and feature the elements they
like. Television channels tend to show similar kind of content so when trying to reach sports fans
getting the content displayed on an appropriate channel (Sky Sports) can aid viewing figures.
