FUTURE SCOPE

5. FUTURE SCOPE

The results and conclusions from the data collected in the survey shows that there is an effect
of harmonics of domestic loads. In future this data can be used as follows:

The data can be used to further anlyse the effect of harmonics on various type of loads
domestic, commercial, industrial etc.
A feedback form can be given to the people (whose houses were surveyed) to inform
them about the health of their equipment and a suggestion can be given for those equipments
which need replacement.
In future, one can also measure the Total Harmonic Distortion caused at the main supply
of every household when all the equipments in the house are being operated (at least 2fans, 2
lights and a TV). This data can be clubbed with the recorded data and an analysis of the effect
of harmonics on the supply can be estimated.
Further research can be done to design filters which help in reducing the harmonic
content of the loads.

CONCLUSION

6. CONCLUSION

In this survey we have done the experiment on domestic loads to know the harmonic distortion
(THD) of each appliance and to analyze the impact of these harmonics on the distribution
network. The experiment was conducted on the loads such as Televisions, Personal Computers,
Air Conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators and supply mains by using power quality
analyzer experimental setup. We used a gang box (6A, 16A) and also voltage probes (16A used
for ACs) for safety during the survey.

In this process of experiment, the circuit is connected to the load appliance, and themeasured
is done by following the procedure. For a refrigerator and AC we set 10minutes time to collect
the data and for TV's, PC's, washing machines and other equipments we set 5minutes.

The total number of houses covered in the survey is only 49 because of issues in getting
permissions and convincing the house owners for the survey. Also, the effect of harmonics on
the distribution network could not be analysed due to inaccessibility of the supply mains. The
survey was done in Visakhapatnam district alone covering regions of Madhurawada,
Seethammadhara and Akkayyapalem. The survey at each house took around 50 minutes on an
average and a maximum of 4 houses could be surveyed per day due to practical limitations.
