Service is an essential part of giving back to the community and showing Christ to other
people. This 2016-2017 school year, I performed multiple acts of service that helped people in
need. We all need to give back to others because it is our duty as Catholics. God created all of us
in his likeness and image, so we have to act as brothers and sisters of Christ. It brings me joy to
know that I made a difference in the life of another person. Going to a Catholic school is a
privilege, and I intend to use my religion to make the world a better place.
Over the course of the year, I completed eight different acts of service with various
causes. At St. Alphonsus School in Wexford, I worked their harvest home festival, I lined judged
at a junior varsity volleyball tournament, and I waitressed at the fish fry. During these three
activities, I was able to help children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Through
Christmas on Troy Hill, I was able to wrap presents for the children and serve as an elf on the
Santa court. This experience was eye opening because it made me realize all of the struggles that
people encounter. It inspired me to do more acts of service to help those that are suffering. The
next two acts of service that I was able to perform were the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic
Alumni luncheon and the open house. At these activities, I served as a greeter to all of the people
coming into CWNC. This gave me the ability to direct them where to go and talk to them. The
last act of service I performed was serving as a student ambassador in the High School Heroes
program at St. Wendelin School. I really enjoyed working with the children at this school.
I performed all of these acts of service because I believe that I need to give back to others
for all that I have in my life. I would not be successful without the help of my teachers, parents,
and friends. Other people benefitted from my service because I was able to talk to these people at
the various activities, and I made their day a more enjoyable experience. I also put a smile on
their faces. I benefited from doing these service activities because I received the joy of putting
others before myself. I was able to make another person happy, and that means a lot to me. All
Christians need to perform service because God created humans to help one another. If someone
is struggling, we need to lend a helping hand. We can show our love to God through service.
