because the pool of employees is significantly smaller. Regardless of how
well you do the job, youll be out the door if you have one or two accidents,
because the EMR ratio goes up faster proportionately.
The stakes have always been high when it comes to safety, but safety
equipment hasnt always adequately protected those whose work puts them
in harms way. Newer technology is rising to the challenge, however, and
workers today have more options for comfortable and effective protective
equipment.
There is never an acceptable excuse to enter a sewer without a proper
gas monitor, or to enter a confined space unattended or without the required
gear. Earlier this year, those exact mistakes cost three Florida utility workers
their lives.
As reported by local news outlets, when crew members noticed a
section of a paved street wasnt settling properly, one of the workers removed
a manhole cover and climbed down to investigate. When workers on the
surface lost contact with the first man, another went down to rescue him.
Then another.
All three died from exposure to hydrogen sulfide and methane gas. None
of them wore masks, confined-space gear or the air packs that could have
saved their lives.
New gear is getting easier to wear and more effective at protecting
workers. This months Safety First column outlines some new wearable
technology that can protect from a host of dangers. The gear is good, but its
only effective if you actually wear it.
You need to do whatever you can to protect yourself and your workers on
the job. I hope youll take that to heart.
Enjoy this months issue. C

Offering an array of services has benefited the company. Baron points out
that if customers like the service you provide and ask you to do something
else for them, theyll go somewhere else if you dont provide that service. In
addition, the work Pro Serve performs in the companys two primary customer
bases pipelines and refineries peaks at different times of the year. These
offsetting cycles provide the company with steadier work and more consistent
cash flow.
Pipeline work occurs mostly in warmer months, while refineries schedule
their major turnarounds (scheduled maintenance shutdowns) in winter because
its too hot in summer to do that kind of work, Baron explains. So its lucky for
us that they dont compete with each other.
On the flip side, Baron only expands into services that fall within the
companys realm of expertise, which affords it better quality control. You can
only go so far, he notes. Weve been asked to get into other service lines, but
we just cant be everything to everybody. Weve stuck primarily with air moving
and spinoffs in that base market, like hydroexcavating and hydroblasting.

Since its inception, Pro Serve has amassed a large fleet of equipment.
The company owns 14 vacuum trucks and 13 of them are equipped with
hydroexcavating packages to maximize utility. The fleet includes 10 GapVax
units and four Guzzlers made by Vactor Manufacturing. The trucks feature 10-

manufactured by Cat and Giant (1,500 to 2,500 psi at 5 to 20 gpm) and Hibon

company has managed to maintain a down-home culture. Were the largest

We emphasize open collaboration, he continues. We have a vast
amount of resources, but unless you tap into them and communicate with the
people next to you, you dont receive the benefits. We also dont micromanage
employees. Instead, we recognize the value of their skill sets and give them
the ability to go out on their own and succeed.
STARTING SMALL
Plumbing and drain cleaning wasnt initially a big part of the company.
By 1997, 30 years after the companys inception, Therma Corp. employed
just two plumbers dedicated to service. But in 1998, the company hired three
more plumbers and officially formed a service department. The initial focus
was servicing backflow preventers, but as customers needs for line cleaning
and inspections increased, the department followed the Parisi philosophy
and expanded accordingly, adding more personnel and equipment.
Our growth was slow, steady and sustained,

HIGH-PRESSURE JOBS
Therma Corp. works with a lot of companies
that require clean rooms, which are sealed
manufacturing areas that must be kept completely
free of contaminants such as air-borne microbes,
dust, chemical vapors and so forth. These rooms rely
on tightly controlled pressurization, temperature and
humidity levels and specialized filtration systems to
eliminate entry of even submicron particles.
As such, its financially disastrous when a stop-
page causes a waste line to back up into a manufac-
turing area, for example. When that happens, the
manufacturing process stops and all the products
may need to be destroyed. If a semiconductor or
pharmaceutical production line goes down, for in-
stance, it could result in millions if not tens of mil-
lions of dollars in lost product, Fisher explains.
So these customers require an exceptionally high
level of service. Thats why we have seven strategi-
cally located remote facilities; they allow us to pro-
vide better response times. In our markets, getting
to a customer in one hour instead of, say, two hours,
is huge. If we get there within an hour, we often can
help prevent product loss.
While the pressure is on during such
emergencies, these jobs also carry high upside, he

owning one doesnt solve anything if you dont
know how to properly use it.
Understanding nozzles and how they work
is a key step to getting the most out of your jetter. Knowing the
proper use of each nozzle will ensure that you always select the
right one for each job.
There should be no guessing when selecting a nozzle for
cleaning operations. Nozzles are designed for specific cleaning
applications. If they are not used for their intended purposes,
then they wont be as effective.
In order to understand nozzles, contractors must first
understand the relationship between pressure and flow ratio. In
general drain cleaning and debris removal, you want low pressure
and high flow. As debris accumulates, you want sufficient flow to
move the material down the line.
As you move into harder material such as encrustation,
mortar, or even solidified grease, you want to operate at a higher
pressure and lower flow to dislodge the material.
Keep in mind that a single nozzle is seldom sufficient. You There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all jetting nozzle. Pressure, flow, jet trajectory, and pipe
condition are all critical factors in selecting the right nozzle for a job.
need to change nozzles as conditions change. For example, once
encrustation and mortar is removed from the pipe wall, you
need to switch to a nozzle that can move the material to the
downstream manhole to be vacuumed out. the 15 to 20 degree range can clean the pipe wall, propel the nozzle and move
Many cleaning operators have a favorite nozzle they use in a variety of debris, but using two nozzles for each job would be more efficient.
conditions. Just because it cleans well in one situation, they assume that it will Many of todays nozzles incorporate a combination of jet angles to
work in every other situation, but that is certainly not the case. perform multiple functions simultaneously. They can clean the pipe wall and
move debris while providing the thrust necessary to perform these tasks.
CLEANING STRATEGIES When selecting a nozzle, consider the type of cleaning you will be doing.
Jet trajectory is critical to nozzle selection. Jet angles in the 30 to 45 degree Are you clearing blockages, removing heavy sediment, cleaning the radiuses

and are unable to move the debris down the line. Jet angles in the 0 to 10 mineral deposits? Each of these requires a different type of nozzle:
degree range are primarily designed for thrust to propel a nozzle up the line. Breaking blockages: Penetrating nozzles have a single function: shoot
Most penetrators will have jet angles in this range because they are designed to up a line and break through a blockage. Their low-degree jet pattern delivers

blockage. These angles are also the most efficient for moving debris. A jet in penetrators also have forward jets, which increase penetrating effectiveness.
NOZZLE CATEGORIES
Nozzles are broken down into three tiers based on efficiency for moving
water. Tier one nozzles have orifices drilled out in different locations and
sizes, and at different angles, which can mean inefficient flow dynamics and
less performance. When the water enters the nozzle, it hits into the back of
its interior, then bounces out in the opposite direction while exiting through
the drilled holes. During this process, a considerable amount of energy is lost.
These nozzles are relatively inexpensive and dont last as long. Over time, the
drilled jet holes wear out and the nozzle becomes ineffective.
Tier two nozzles are more expensive, but have better flow dynamics than
tier one nozzles. They have replaceable inserts that also straighten the jet
streams as they exit the nozzle. When the jet orifices wear out, these nozzles
can be restored to their full operating capacity by replacing the inserts.
Tier three nozzles are designed to maximize the efficiency of water flow.
Flow dynamics are designed to significantly increase the water pressure
exiting the jets. Under certain conditions, these nozzles can increase cleaning
efficiency. Their only downside is the fact that they can be very costly.
However, the cost is usually offset by increased efficiency.
Nozzle design has made huge strides in the past few years. By
understanding how nozzles work and staying informed of available technology,
youll be able to clean lines more efficiently and effectively. C
