The goal of my project was to spread awareness of my topic
through writing, and encourage others to use writing as an
outlet for activism. My topic was mental illnesses and how
prescription drugs may not be the best way to treat them. My
work researching and conducting interviews increased my
knowledge of the subject allowing me to incorporate what I
learned and my message into my writing. I needed to know
the basic drugs used to treat the specific mental illnesses I was
researching, their long-term use and effectiveness, and the side
effects they cause. I learned how mental illnesses are apart of
everyday life for those who deal with them, and what methods
of treatment seem to work the best for most people.
In order to complete this project, first I met wit my mentor, Mr.
Cline, to go over the overall Idea I had for the play. Then I
took his ideas and incorporated it in the process of writing the
play. After the structure of the play was done, I showed my
work to Cline for more feedback. With a better idea of what
my play needed, I then had to finish the play, get feedback
from interviewees and other friends, show Cline the completed
work, get last minute feedback, and print the final copy.
Because I know how to write a play effectively, I can know
write plays easier. The technology used started out as
microsoft word but was transferred to google drive. The
sharing option was also used for feedback. Skills learned and
improved were my ability to take information from an
interview and incorporate it into my writing, and my ability to
take constructive criticism. .
The writing process went well, because it wasnt rushed and I
had plenty of feedback to keep it fresh. Balancing the writing
with the other work associated with the project could have
gone better. I could have focused on getting additional work
done early to allow more time for writing. I demonstrated
growth by keeping on my toes, and being open to change.
Ideas for the play had to shift many times, as I received new
suggestions. I really showed my ability to adapt to new ways
of thinking when they serve my concept better. Creating a
legacy with my art was truly an honor, as I hope young writers
and activists in the future choose to write plays and other
stories to spread awareness in their projects. My art medium
allowed me to directly tell the untold story through the
characters I created. Yes, I met my goals by sticking with my
project through hard times when it all didnt seem possible.
No matter what happened, I knew that I would be proud of my

presentation to be inspired to write as a way to spread
awareness for issues they have passion for. In this way, they
can inspire whomever they show their writing to, and so on.
