bestwaypossible,astheythink.Therearefivemainstrategiesteachersuseinthe
classroom,toteachtheirstudents.
Thefirststyleistheauthority,orlecturestyle.
Thisteachingstylecentersaroundtheteacher,andfrequentlyincludes
long,lecturesessionsorone-waypresentations.Studentsareusuallyexpectedto
takenotesandlistencarefully.
Thisstyleiscertainlyacceptableforspecifichighereducationlecturesand
auditoriumsettings,withlargegroupsofstudents.Thislecturestyleismost
suitableforsubjectsthathavedates,names,andkeyfactstomemorize.One
exampleofasubjectthisstylewouldaccommodatewelltowouldbehistory.But,
thisstylecanbeabitdifficulttocontainalloftheinformation,becausethereis
verylittleornointeractionwiththeteacher.
Thenextteachingstyleisthedemonstrator,orthecoachingstyle.
Thisspecificstyleallowstheteachertostillremainincontrolofthelesson,
butstillallowstheteachertodemonstratetheirexpertisebyshowingtheir
studentswhattheyllneedtoknow.
Itgivestheteacherstheopportunitytoincorporatemultipleformatsof
teachingincludinglectures,multimediapresentations,anddemonstrations.Itis
well-suitedforteachingmath,music,P.E,andartsandcrafts,butitsdifficultto
catertostudentsindividualneedsinalargerenvironmentorclassroom.
Next,isthedelegator,orthegroupstyle.
Thisstyleisbestsuitedforcurriculumsthatinvolvelab
activities(Biology/Chemistry),orsubjectsthatfeedoffpeerfeedback,like
creative/debativewriting.
Havingguideddiscoveryandinquiry-basedlearningplacestheteacherin
anobserverrole,thatinspiresstudentstoworktowardscommongoals.Ina
modernstyleofteachinghowever,itssometimescriticizedasnewandgeared
towardtheteacherasaconsultantratherthanassumingthetraditionalteacher
role.
Thehybrid,orblendingstyle
Thisstyleincorporatestheteacherspersonalityandinterestswith
studentneedsandcurriculum-appropriatemethods.
Thisstyledoessucceedincombiningdifferentteachingstyles,aswellas
enablingthemtotailortheirstylestothestudentsneedsandtherightsubject.
But,thisstyleofteachingalsorunstheriskoftryingtobetoomanythings
toallstudents,lettingteachersthatdodevelopatoothinanddilutelearning
environment.
Althoughitsnottheteachersjobtoentertainthestudents,itsvitalto
engagethemintheirlearning.Selectingastyleteachingthataddressestheneeds
ofdiversestudentsatdifferentlearninglevelsbeginswithaselfevaluation,of
theteachersstrengthsandweaknesses.
Teachingstyleshaveevolvedovertime.AnthonyF.Grasha,aprofessor
whotaughtpsychologyattheUniversityofCincinnati,developedtheclassicfive
teachingstyles.Hedevelopedateachingstyleinventory,thatsincethenhasbeen
modifiedandadoptedbyfollowers.
Expert=whoissimiliartoacoach,demonstratingandsharingtheir
expertise.Theyadvisestudentsandprovidefeedbacktoimprovethe
studentsunderstandingandpromotetheirlearning.
FormalAuthority=includesblendedteachingstylesthatbestmatchthe
learningenvironmentsandscenarios.
Facilitator=theydesignparticipatorylearningactivitiesandmanages
classroomprojects,whileprovidingfeedbackandcriticalthinking.
Delegator=organizesgrouplearning,observesstudents,provides
consultationandpromotesinteractionbetweenstudentstoachieve
learningobjectives.
