Since 2007, Halverson had been an

INTERVIEW WITH DON AMEDOLIA

I first saw you in the original New
York production of Caryl Churchill’s
Cloud Nine in 1981, and soon afterward,
you acted in and directed that comedy
for Cricket Theatre, which then was the
third major Minneapolis theater after
the Guthrie and Children’s Theatre.
Your production was a breakthrough in
local Equity theater history for its bold
queer and racial concepts. You played
the little girl in both productions.
Yes. And the servant, in the first act,
who must be played by a white man. It’s
all about contradictions. Tommy Tune, the
director, had other things to do, so there
wasn’t going to be a company of it going

I think Michelle Federer, who origi-

JUDGE DIDN’T BAR ANTIGAY
ACTIVIST FROM PRIDE FESTIVAL
A federal judge ruled in June that
Twin Cities Pride could not prevent Brian
Johnson, an antigay, born-again Christian,
from handing out Bibles during the Pride
Festival in Loring Park, Minneapolis.
Organizers had asked for a temporary re-
straining order against him. They argued
that their lease of park space allowed them
to determine who can hand out literature.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation
Board decided previously that Johnson
could attend, as long as he didn’t disrupt
the event or harass participants.

WISCONSIN SUPREME COURT
UPHOLDS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
BAN
The Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld
the state’s constitutional ban on same-sex
marriage and civil unions. A lawsuit had
challenged the way the 2006 constitu-
tional amendment was put before voters.
The court ruled 7-0 that the amendment
properly was placed on the ballot.

WISCONSIN COURT SAYS GAY

PARENTS DO NOT HAVE EQUAL
RIGHTS
A Wisconsin state appeals court decid-
ed in June that not all gay parents have full
parental rights of their adopted children.
It ruled against a woman who was seeking
guardianship of two adopted children she
helped raise with her former partner. Un-
der Wisconsin law, only one person can
become an adopted child’s legal guardian.
Even though the woman was the chil-
dren’s stay-at-home mother for years, the
appeals court held that she is not a parent
under state law.

Christian Legal Society at Hastings Col-
lege of the Law in California required its
members to sign a statement of faith that
regarded “unrepentant participation in or

advocacy of a sexually immoral lifestyle”
as unacceptable. The college revoked the
society’s charter, saying it would not rec-
ognize a group that excludes people based
on religious belief or sexual orientation. A
lower court decided that the college did
not violate the society’s free-speech rights.
The high court upheld that decision 5-4.

JOAN RIVERS URGES GAY STARS

TO “STAY IN THE CLOSET”
In a recent interview with The Advo-
cate, comedian Joan Rivers urged gay stars
to stay in the closet. She noted that show
business is still difficult for them. She
thinks they’d be better off keeping their
sexual orientation hidden. Rivers said, “If
you’re going to be a romantic idol, and
try to get every teenage girl to love you,
then you’d be an ass to come out, and say
you’re gay.” She went on to praise singer
Ricky Martin for waiting to come out un-
til after he was financially successful.

HAWAII GOVERNOR VETOES

SAME-SEX CIVIL UNIONS BILL
In July, Hawaii Republican Governor
Linda Lingle vetoed legislation that would
have legalized same-sex civil unions in the
state. She said at a news conference that
the bill was “essentially same-sex mar-
riage by another name.” She added that
citizens, not their elected representatives,
should vote directly on the issue.

Gardner shines more fully in the Mu-

sumed to be gay because he breaks into
song from classics like The Sound of Music
and A Chorus Line. This piece charmed
me, but the “terrets” aspect is potentially
dubious. Is this at the expense of the plight

aware of how one’s personal image too
easily can be owned by others in one’s
own egotistical quest for recognition.
Andy Warhol’s proverbial 15 minutes of
fame notion sets the tone for this unique
exhibit. As we enter, his Screen Test: Robin,
shot in the mid-1960s, projects a close-up
of a young woman simply being. Who she
is exactly is unknown.
In the slide presentation Freefotolab,
Phil Collins has selected rolls of undevel-
oped film sent to him under condition that
the photographers relinquish all rights to
him. The results are often mundane, but
sporadically, something like two young

The Kids Are All

Right Is Must-See
Film for Rainbow
Families
For rainbow families—as well as any-
one else GLBT or straight—The Kids Are
All Right, directed by Lisa Cholodenko
(High Art and Laurel Canyon), and written
by Stuart Blumberg and her, is a must-see
film. The title derives from the song “The
Kids Are Alright” by The Who.
At the beginning of the movie, Nic
(Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne
Moore) are a middle-aged lesbian couple
who have been together since at least the
early 1990s. They have two teenaged chil-
dren by artificial insemination: daughter
Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and son Laser
(Josh Hutcherson). The family’s seem-
ingly placid existence is disturbed when
the kids contact their sperm-donor father,
Paul (Mark Ruffalo). Not to be a spoiler,
let’s just say that all hell breaks loose!
Throughout, The Kids Are All Right
alternates between hilarious comedy and
poignant drama. All the acting is superb,
particularly Bening as Nic, an uptight
medical professional who finds her com-
fortable existence transgressed by Paul’s
role in the family’s life.
By the end of the film, you’re not sure
if you’ve just seen a romantic comedy or
a family drama. Nonetheless, it’s a great

cinematic treat.

I stood at the counter for several min-

utes before a stick figure with a buzz cut
and a minefield of facial piercings finally
approached me. She walked to the counter
warily, like a sick dog would, doing her best
to avoid eye contact. Then, she slouched
her way to the coffee pot, and groaned
when she lifted a cup, as if the action were
draining the last of her life force.
In retaliation, I rapidly tapped my fin-
gernails on the counter, a gesture I picked
up from my mother, who uses it quite ef-
fectively to intimidate poky clerks, bridge
opponents, and my father.
My impatience was lost on Miss Ane-
mia, who was like a superhero armed with
spectacular powers of passive-aggression,
which she used to defy all laws of motion
and civility. When she finally shuffled over
with my coffee, I handed her a $10 bill, and
told her to keep the change, hoping she’d
use it to buy herself some multivitamins.
As I was leaving the shop, I heard some-
one call out my name weakly. I turned to
find my friend, Ingrid, huddled at a tiny
table in a dark corner, looking more like a
smudge mark than a girl.

Ms. Behavior© |
[ by Meryl Cohn ]

Bothered Bubbe
Dear Ms Behavior:
I am old-fashioned, but I have tried to
change with the times. My daughter, who
is gay, is married to a wonderful girl. They
adopted the most beautiful baby in the
world. Of course, that’s not the problem.
The problem is the Internet.
My daughter and daughter-in-law have a
blog, and they write about every single thing
that’s going on in their lives. Plus, they put
tons of pictures of my grandson on it.
Granted, he has the cutest little ca-
boose in the world, but must it be avail-
able for everyone to see?
Plus, they have their names, phone
numbers, address, and birthdays on this
blog.
First, is this ethical?
My grandson is only a year old. He can-
not yet form complete sentences such as,
“Mommy, take my tuchus off the Internet.”
Second, is this safe?
I fear someone will kidnap the little
guy in the middle of the night.
Third, should I say something?
My daughter is stubborn, so I’m afraid
she will feel criticized, and stop speaking
to me. If I talk to my daughter-in-law, my
daughter will feel I went behind her back.
So, maybe I should forget the whole
thing?
Still, it keeps me up at night.
—Bothered Bubbe

Dear Bothered Bubbe:

Although the baby hasn’t offered his con-
sent to be a supermodel, the problem seems
more an issue of safety than a lack of ethics.
Because blogs are public, and usually
meant to attract a wide audience, it’s not
wise to post your home address along with
naked photos of your infant, yourself, or
even your alluring Pomeranian bound and
gagged, and dressed in a tutu.
Granted, your daughter and daughter-
in-law are not creating kiddie porn. But
the world is full of creeps and perverts—
and, of course, angels and unicorns, for
those who need reassurance—so display-
ing to an array of unknown readers one’s
baby-in-the-raw (or even fully dressed)

along with location info is at least a little

naive, if not downright disturbing.
Instead of telling your daughter your
feelings about this, which she indeed may
perceive as criticism, try casually men-

72
tioning you recently learned that some
people keep their kids’ photos “locked”
on their blog or website, and offer the
password only to trusted friends and ac-
quaintances. This option may help keep
the pervs at bay.

Dear Ms. Behavior:

Our two dear old lesbian friends, Tricia
and Patsy, who are in their 60s and 70s, have
gone mad. They’re about to quit their jobs,
sell their house, buy a recreational vehicle,
and travel around the country for “a year or
two.” They’re used to a large home, so be-
ing stuffed into a 30-foot camper probably
will make them kill each other.
These feisty older women obviously
haven’t thought it through. They have
no health care, plus no plans other than
hobbling into a camper, and driving away.
Once they’ve spent all their money on gas,
fast food, and RV parking, they won’t have
a home, other than the RV.
Tricia and Patsy have no children to in-
tervene. So, if anyone cares, it’s us. We’ve
tried to discuss it with them to no avail.
This whole ill-formed plan makes us terri-
bly anxious. Also, if they drive off into the
sunset, and come back broke, we’re afraid
they’ll need to spend the rest of their lives
in our guest room.
How can we stop them?
—Betty and Veronica

Dear Betty and Veronica,

Instead of trying to talk them out of
their hare-brained scheme, act supportive,
while helping them build a safety net.
For example, help them to rent out
their house, instead of selling it. Help
them find an RV to lease, instead of buy-
ing one, so that when they drive each oth-
er mad in their tiny home-on-wheels, they
have a way out. If you really want to help,
go online, and download applications for
travel insurance or short-term medical in-
surance for when they’re on the road.
They may object to your interference,
but at least you’ll have done something
concrete to try to avert catastrophe. These
concrete solutions may be more effective
than simply telling them they’re crazy and
irresponsible.
Meanwhile, let them know that you’re
changing your guest room into a home
gym, or a sewing room, or an S/M lounge,
so they won’t be planning to land there
after blowing their remaining $5 on a
