Panting,Adelineranfartherintothethreateningshadows,hopingforanypossible

Adeline'sspine.Heartracing,Adelineranupthestairs,quicklypackedherschoolbagwitha
changeofclothesandopenedherwindow.Downbelow,someonewasstillpoundingloudly
onthedoor.Adelinedidn'tlookbackasshethrewherselfoutofherwindowandintothe
bushedbelow.Cursing,shestoodupandtriedtoremoveanyleavesfromherclothes.Shewas
scratchedandbleedingslightlyinsomeplacesfromthethornsonthebush,butotherwise
okay.
Adelinetookoffrunningbeforeanyonecouldcatchuptoher.Stoppingtocrouch
behindanabandonedbuilding,shepulledoutasheetofpaperwiththeaddresstohermom's
church.
Afteraskingfordirections,Adelinewasonherway,walkingintoanoldermore
Victorianpartofthecity.Soon,alargechurchappearedinfrontofher.Itseemedabandoned
anditsroofwasstartingtocaveitononeside.
Whywouldshebehere?Thisplaceisabandonedandsurelyinhospitableinside.
However,justoutside,Adelinesawhermother'sbrightbluecarparkedinthegrass.

oldarmyrecruitbuilding.Ondayhewascarryingapackage.Unfortunately,Peteralsohada
packagethatlookedexactlyliketheotherpackage.Theybumpedintoeachotheratthecorner
andtheydroppedtheirpackages.Whentheywenttopickthemuptheyaccidentallyswapped
theirboxes.WhenPeterwenttohisdowntroddenapartment,hewaseagertoeatsome
homemadedumplingsthathismothersentfromJapan.Whenheopenedthepackage
carefully.Assoonasitopened,hediscoveredavialcontainingthreewhiteorbs.Thinkingthey
werehismother'sdumplings,heatethem.Whentheinternreturnedtohisdorm,he
franticallyopenedthepackagemakingsurenoonewaslooking.Alarmedofwhathesaw,he
startedtohyperventilate.Hehadlosttheunstablegeneticallymodifiedspidereggs!Thenext
morning,Peterwaslyingdeadinhisbedwithhisbottomjawmissingandlargeholethrough
hisabdomen.Theeggshadhatchedandprobablylaideggsinthefoodoftheentireapartment
buildingbynow.Thosespidersweresupposedtobebio-weaponsagainsttheretaliating
country_______.Nowsincethespiderswerelooseandabout,thelearninggeneticistwas
reallyworriedtodeath.Thenitgottohim.Heinsertedagenethatmakesthespiderevolve
aftereverygenerationtime.Hethoughtitwasjustabaddreamandtriedtowakeupbutthis
wasnodream.Heeventriedtorelaxbytryingtowatchsometelevisionbuteverychannelwas
telecastingemergencynews.RISEOFTHESPIDERKING.Inanotherchannel,they
broadcastedaclipofoneoftheirreporterbemauledbythequeenspiderwhowaslaying
thousandsofeggs.Peoplelyingdeadonthestreetwithabustedstomachandajawlessface.It
wasweirdtothestudenthowhiscolleague,wholosthisjawtotobaccostillsurvived.Hetold
himthatthespidersareattractedtotheelectricalfrequencyoftheirlowersalivaryglandsand
willdoeverythingtoeatit.Butunfortunately,itwastoolate.Theywerethelasttwoofthe
peopleontheislandtodie.Astoundingly,theyfoundablockedoffroominthearmybuilding.
Theytriedtoopentheoldmoldywoodenbarricades.Theyfranticallyboardedtheoldplane
noticingthattheoldmanwaslyingdeadduetocardiacarrest.Heknewhehadtosurvive.He
quicklyskimmedthroughtheownersmanualandtookoffwithahalftankoffuel.Thatwas
justenoughtogoandgethelpinBrazil.Hewashungryandgotsomethingtoeatfromthefood
storages.Withoutknowing,heatesomethingwiththespidereggsinit.Hediedandcrashedin

deedtotheproperty.Hewenthappilyonhisway,whenhesawtheowner.Theywerefurious
andchasedthefutureprincipalheoutruntheowner,buttheownerexplainedtohimthathe
hadbeencursed.Theownersaidthatonthe60thanniversaryoftheschool,theywouldavenge
himintheformofaghostanddestroytheschool.Thecelebrationonthe60thyear

differentlocation,wherethenewschoolisbuilt.ThenameischangedtoEmmersonMiddle
school.HendersonMiddleschoolisonlyanimaginaryplacenow.Thepropertyhasbeen
foreverforgotten,butthereisanotherlegendthat,theprincipalwhostolethedeed,will
avengethenewschoolinhisangerandwillburntheschooldownandallthefacultyand
studentsinit.Tothisday,noonehasevertakenanothersteponthepropertythatusedtobe
HendersonMiddleschool.

arrivedattheshop.Heshowedittotheclerkandevenshowedhimthegobackbuttonsinceit
wasntontime.Hepresseditnotsurewhatwouldhappenwhenabubbleofelectricity
surroundedhimandclosedinonhim.Therewasdarknessthenabrightflashandhewasback
atthealley.Heranbacktowardsthepawnshopwhenthesamecaralmosthithim.Helooked
atthewatchtorealizethathenotonlymovedlocationbutmovedbackintime.Realizingthat
hecanfixallthemistakesheslammedthebuttononthewatchtogoback.Anotherbubbleof
electricitysurroundedandclosedonhim.Hewastheninavoidandwaitedtoreturntothe
world.Hewaitedandwaitedandwaited.Thenhereturned,butinthesameplace.Angrily
hethrewthewatchdownbreakingitandsendingoutashockwave.Hewokeuptorealize
everythinghadstopped.Timeneithermovedforwardorbackward,andhewasstuck.

reachedmybones.Earlierthatdayeverythingwasn'tabsoluteheck,butnowitwas,therewas
fireswithflamesthatsoaredtowhatseemedthecloudsandtheheavensabove.Iwasonly13
andthisisn'tnormal.IlivedinChicagoandagainthisisn'tnormal,thealleyinwhichIlive
was,let'sjustsayitsnotasbigasanapartmentbutitmakesdue.Itwasagoodlifeuntilthis
happened,afireinoneofthemosturbancitiesinAmerica.Mynameisjackandthisismy
currentsituationImtrapped.Mylifeisadisasterliterallythewallsenclosemelikeacage
housingacat.Astheflamesslowlyencasemyfate,asawastedone.Thenthereweresirensthe
onlythoughtthatcrossedmymindwasthethingsIwouldlose,myfriends.Thefirecreptever
closerasIhadasuddenfeelingofregretthatmademeslightlytearup.Theonlyproblemwas
thatwhenthetearsstartedtofalltheydidnt,thefirewassoclosetomethatitvaporizedmy

Suddenlytherewasavoice,adeepvoice,sinceIthoughtofsomeonetorescuemeIlooked
aroundbutsawnoone.Ilookedupatthebrightredandorangesky,thenanothervoice,the
flameswererightthereabout100feetaway,awallofdeathanddevastation.Thenthevoice
saidcomewithmeandIfollowedtherewasasmallpassagewaybacktotheothersidewallof
thealleyIlookedthroughtheflamesweretoweringovermesingeingmyhair.Ihadtogo
throughtheflamehadnotgottenoverthereyetIjumpedthoughassomethingexploded
behindmeblastingmethroughthehole.IgotoutandIsawtheluminousdarkcloudspassover
myheadthefiremensawmeandpickedmeupIwokeinthehospital.Ineverknewwhocalled
tomethatdayorwhocouldhaveknown,IwasaChristiansoIthankedGodforthemessage.
InthehospitalIhadnotopenedmyeyesyetIwasafraidofwhatIwouldfindbutmainly
