Intern Session 1
Saturday, March 4, 2017
4 Hours
Todays goal was to introduce me to the facility, the physical therapists who work there, and the
patients. I followed a physical therapist named Mary, and observed her working with various
patients. She showed me the different areas of the facility including the therapy gym, residency
areas, and dining areas. We then began evaluating various patients, and later worked with others
on different goals such as walking or standing on their own.
Intern Session 2
Saturday, April 22, 2017
4 Hours
Today I observed Mary while she helped patients work on various goals, such as walking and
standing unassisted. Other exercises included walking up a set of stairs in the therapy gym, and
pedalling on an exercise machine to improve the patients cardiovascular systems. I enjoyed
learning about the different ways that physical therapists work with patients to improve their
daily lives.
Intern Session 3
Saturday, May 13, 2017
3 Hours
Today I observed a different physical therapist named Annabelle. I followed her and observed as
she evaluated new patients, and worked with current patients. It was interesting to hear their
different stories of how they ended up at the EmpRes, and to see the progress that they have
made since being admitted. I enjoyed getting to assist by pushing a wheelchair behind patients
while they practised walking.
Intern Session 4
Monday. May 22, 2017
9 Hours
Intern Session 5
4 Hours
In addition to observing and interning at the EmpRes and Laidlaw Orthodontics I interviewed
some family members and friends who have -or currently- worked in the medical field. First, I
spoke with my grandma who was a Certified Nurses Assistant (CNA) for 35 years. While
talking to her I was amazed at how hard she worked as a CNA, and how dedicated she was to her
patients. Then I interviewed my mom who worked as a medical receptionist for Kaiser. After
that I talked with one of my moms friends who is a Registered Nurse about her experience
working in a hospital.
