(e) True Bearing (f) Magnetic bearing (g) Forebearing (h) Backbearing
(i) Mean sea level (j) Reduced Level (k) Elevation (l) Benchmark
(m) Datum line (n) Contour (o) gradient (p) Station

2. Give different between prismatic compass and surveyors compass.

3. Explain the various parts of prismatic compass.

4. Explain the types of staff used for levelling.

5. Calculate BB from the given FB:

(a) 265 (b) 160 (c) 350 (d) 60

6. Calculate the internal angles from the given traverse data:

Line FB BB
AB 45 00 225 00
BC 123 30 303 30
CD 181 00 1 00
DA 289 00 109 00

7. Calculate the interior angles of the traverse shown below:

Line FB
AB N4530E
BC S6000E
CD S1030W
DA N7545W

8. The distance between the points measured along a slope is 428m. Find the horizontal distance
between them if (a) the angle of slope between the points is 8, (b) the difference in level is 62m
and (c) the slope is 1 in 4.
9. Find the hypotenusal allowance per chain of 20m length if (i) the angle of slope is 10 and (ii) the
ground rises by 4m in one chain length.

10. The following bearings were observed while traversing with a compass. Mention which stations
are affected by local attraction and determine the corrected bearings.

11. Draw dumpy level and explain its parts.

12. Define height of instrument and explain the procedure to calculate RL.

13. Define Rise and Fall. Explain the procedure to calculate RL.

14. Give difference between HI method and Rise&Fall method.

15. The following staff readings were observed successively with a level, the instrument having been
moved after third, sixth and eighth readings: 2.228; 1.606; 0.988; 2.090; 2.864; 1.262; 0.602; 1.982;
1.044; 2.684 metres. Enter the above readings in a page of level book and calculate the RL of points
if the first reading was taken with a staff held on a BM of 432.384m.

16. The following consecutive readings were taken with a dumpy level along a chain line at a common
interval of 5m. The position of the instrument was changed after 3rd, 7th, and 10th readings. Draw
out the form of a level book and enter the above readings properly. Assume the RL of the 1st point
as 50.00m. Calculate the RL of all points and apply the usual checks. Use (1) HI method and (2)
Rise and Fall method.
0.350; 0.580; 0645; 1.850; 1.935; 2.450; 1.75; 0.360; 0.720; 1.200; 0.920; 0.630

17. Following are the staff readings observed with a level. First observation taken on BM of RL
175.00m. Complete the field book and show necessary checks.

Station BS IS FS HI RL Remarks
1 2.225 ? ? BM
2 1.605 ?
3 2.090 0.955 ? ? ?
4 1.860 ?
5 0.600 1.260 ? ? ?
6 0.985 ?

18. The following readings were observed with a level as below. Calculate the following (a) Reduce
the levels by rise and fall method (b) the level of T.B.M if the line of collimation was tilted upwards
at an angle of 6min and each B.S length was 90m and the FS length was 30m (c) the level of T.B.M
if the staff was not held upright but leaning backwards at 5 to the vertical in all cases.
1.143 (BM: 34.223m), 1.765, 2.566, 3.819 (C.P), 1.390, 2.262, 0.664, 0.433 (C.P), 3.722, 2.886,
1.618, 0.616 (T.B.M: marked as 35.290).

19. The staff reading taken on a point of known elevation is known as (a) FS (b) BS (c) IS (d) RL.

20. On a change point (a) only BS is taken (b) only FS is taken (c) one intermediate sight is taken (d)
