BMCG 3233 MECHANICAL VIBRATION

ASSIGNMENT
(DOCUMENTARY VIDEO)
Semester II: 2016/2017

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the assignment is to assess your analysis, design and synthetic capabilities on how
to approach an engineering vibration problem by considering safety, environmental, cultural and
public health issues. You must present the proposed solution starting from modelling the
vibrating system and what control measure to be taken.

TASK

Make a short documentary video on one of the topics of vibration listed in Table 1 (you can
also propose a different topic). The general storyboard of your video is as follows:

a. Good introduction.

b. Highlighting a specific case study to address the problem you want to solve.
Discuss a specific case study of vibration control from your chosen topic. Visiting the
relevant site or industry is encouraged to add relevancy to your project.

c. Modelling the vibrating system.

Explain briefly the working principle of the vibration control measure. Model the vibrating
system by employing a simple equation of motion (single degree or two-degree of
freedom) which has been taught in the class. Explain your assumption (if any). The theory
should lead you to the explanation on how the vibration amplitude can be controlled or
reduced.

d. Conclusion.
ABOUT THE VIDEO

Your challenge is to produce a video which is interactive and engaging to the audience.
You can add other external sources, for example if you have a relevant YouTube video which is
suitable to you project. This can be part of your video. Please use your own voice to explain
the video (dubbing the voice).

Duration of the video should NOT be more than 5 minutes (no excuse). Use your creativity
and ensure that your video is informative within this time limit. All the members of the group
should actively involve in the video (short appearance and voice). Please refer to good project
videos created from the previous semesters published in my YouTube Channel (Search: Azma
Putra. The link is provided in U-Learn).

ASSESSMENT

Progress Video 3%

Final Video 8%

Peer to Peer 2%

Total Mark 13%

*NB: 13% is the total mark for assignment out of 100% for BMCG 3233.
INSTRUCTION

1. This assignment should be done in a group. Each group should be no more than 5 students.
2. You should present your progress video personally by 25-28 April 2017. The aim is to guide
students so that the final video will have quality as expected.
3. The final video must be submitted by Friday, 12 May 2017.
4. Upload your progress video and your final video in YouTube and submit the links in U-Learn.
5. There will be a peer-to-peer assessment. So make sure everyone is active and has positive
contribution in the project.
6. Refer to the rubric assessment forms to know what parameters are required for a good
quality video.
