Introduction

As the age of information continues to expand and its scopes are continually

creeping on the different societies in the world, resources and new way of creating and

innovating thing and the way are thing are done have changed. The end of chemical

revolution on year 1700 has ceased, after that in the middle of the 18th up to 19th century

or 1800 up to 1900. The emergence of the industrial revolution start to take place where

are new machineries are created new way of life have taken place for families and the

society. The existence of the industrial revolution is a big factor in the massive

exploitation of the world’s resources as human being increase new needs start to exist.

After the industrial revolution another era starts to creeps on the society, again where in

fact it is the business world that was most benefited, the information age (1990). The

Information Age, also commonly known as the Computer Age or Information Era, this is

an idea that the current age will be characterized by the ability of individuals to transfer

information freely, and to have instant access to knowledge that would have been

difficult or impossible to find in previous ages . This new age has brought new

advancement not only in the society, but also in science the advancement on the economy

have a great impact on the exploration and exploitation of the world’s resources. Now the

21st century has risen and the different era have been long gone the complexity of the

society, business sectors, scientific advancement, population growth and the emergence

of the 21st century needs have become more complex. In the olden days basic need are

considered blessing having access to a potable drinking water is but just a dream but as

time goes by new need are created, wants are very accessible. Transportation of cargoes
and other things is by caravans delivered by lonely merchants who of course will take

days before it reaches its consumer, but the exploration of oil resources and the creation

of new machineries have made transportation easy like delivery truck and planes. One

month of delivery time has indeed been lessened for only a matter of hours. But because

of man made needs the worlds resources are being depleted this is called scarcity.

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem of having seemingly unlimited human

needs and wants, in a world of limited resources. It states that society has insufficient

productive resources to fulfill all human wants and needs.

X
Rat cage

A rat cage is just like a normal cage for rat where rats can freely move around.

This a where the discussion will start just like any other species human being have need

living on a world that has valuable resources but these resource are just limited and some

of these are very difficult to regenerate like water and food of various kind. The rat cage

is just a mere representation of the world that we lived in today, but what is so special

about it, maybe it has rat inside well, its correct!! It has rat inside and this rats are like

human beings that has needs. This concept about the rat cage will some how relate us to

the depletion of the world natural resources as the pollution of rats (people) continue to

grow which later cannot be sustained although there is food production.

The General Environment of Human Consumption

The world is enough for mans need but not for mans greed……Mahatma Gandi

Why does stones and rocks don’t eat? Because they are rocks Stupid….

We are not rocks who do not feel the call of hunger. From the very beginning or even we

are still inside our mother’s womb, human being start to consume food and after birth

new needs must be met. As we grow more and more need are needed by our body to

1
Function in a normal day, need indeed as we grow becomes complex. Let us examine the

way we consume every day how much do we need and how much waste we creates based

from mind full.org (http://www.mindfully.org) this is a average resources American

consume

American consumption

Americans constitute 5% of the world's population but consume 24% of the world's

energy.

On average, one American consumes as much energy as

• 2 Japanese

• 6 Mexicans

• 13 Chinese

• 31 Indians

• 128 Bangladeshis

• 307 Tanzanians

• 370 Ethiopians

If we look in the American society, you might be surprised on who much they

consume every day compared to other people living to the other part of the world. There

is a finding that Americans eat 815 billion calories of food each day - that's roughly 200

2
Billion more than needed - enough to feed 80 million people. No wonder why many

Americans have physical condition like obesity. In addition Americans throw out

200,000 tons of edible food daily. Which mean that there is a much generation of waste

product that can feed many people if properly allocated. The average American generates

52 tons of garbage by age 75. Indeed waste produced are either recycled or not. And

these 52 tons of garbage is produced by only one person. The formula here is that these

52 tons of garbage is multiplied by the totality of the American less the entire population

of the world. So by the end of every hundred years land fills will be really filled by

garbage. And the availability of dump site will be a problem.

The average individual daily consumption of water is 159 gallons, while more than

half the world's population lives on 25 gallons. This condition is very severe on other part

of the globe especially those country that are still undeveloped. And these 159 gallons of

clean water is either wasted or consumed. Fifty percent of the wetlands, 90% of the

northwestern old-growth forests, and 99% of the tall-grass prairie have been destroyed in

the last 200 years. 80% of the corn grown and 95% of the oats are fed to livestock. Every

day an estimated nine square miles of rural land are lost to development.

There are more shopping malls than high schools. How tragic!!!

50 million people have died of hunger-related causes in the past quarter-century —

roughly 10 million each year. This is due to low product production and other related

factor like inequality of food distribution all over the world where rich countries can eat

3
What ever they want to eat, and scraps and left over for the poor countries. In addition

700 to 800 million people, perhaps even as many as a billion, don't get enough food to

support normal daily activities and Africa now produces 27% less food per capita than in

1964.1.7 billion People lack access to clean drinking water, and by the year 2000, the

number of urban dwellers without access to safe water and sanitation services is expected

to grow by 80%.

0.1% of pesticides applied to crops reach the pest, the rest poisons the ecosystem. Each

year 25 million people are poisoned by pesticides in less developed countries, and over

20,000 die. One-third of the world's fish catch and more than one-third of the world's

total grain output are fed to livestock.

It takes an average of 25 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat in modern

Western farming systems. It takes 5,214 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef.

Each person in the industrialized world uses as much commercial energy as 10 people in

the developing world.

Source: Paul Ehrlich and the Population Bomb

An average human being needs to consumes two liters of water very day, and in a

lifetime a person consumes 75,000 liters of water through their life time These are some

information on who much a human being consumes per day.

4
and how much resources are consumed, of course some of this are finished state where

production have already taken place, and while this are still in their original state this

resources also need other resources to produce the end state like a pound of beef, which

need 5,214 gallons of water to produce a pound of it.

Exhibit: 1.A. Resource and population matrix

The exhibit shown above shows the simple presentation on how one variable will pull the

other one. In the exhibit if the resources is deemed fix which mean that it does not change

or if it change, the change is just relatively little. The variable which is the population is

an independent variable and the dependent variable is the resources. Observe as the

5
Population grows it also follows that the resources that needs to be consume will also

increase. But of course there will come a time that the resources can no longer sustain the

need of the population. Observe that there is a maximum limit of the resources which can

sustain the population. If these happen food shortage will occur. This is the essence of the

rat cage and the rats inside the cage on how will they cope to the change.

In support of the exhibit above there are other theories that have recognized the

relationship on the supply of the natural resources to the booming population of man.

One of these theories is the Malthusian theory, this theory is proposed by an English

economist and at the same time a priest whose name is Thomas Robert Malthus.

According to him when the population grows faster than the supply of food, the

population increases in geometric ratio while the food supply is in arithmetic form. His

theory also recognizes that when the population growth it self is not check and there is an

uncontrollable population people would experience famine and death. Malthus have two

suggestions that can prevent the rapid boom of the population, the first is the preventive

check where he suggested that the youth should avoid early marriage, even premarital

sex, in addition to this is family planning, birth control and the decrease of infant

mortality are some step in controlling the population.

The second is the positive checked where the role of epidemic, famine, war, illnesses,

natural calamities, high death rates, poverty and low birth rate are the factors in

controlling population growth.

6
Human Population

Go ye and multiply….. Genesis 1:28

Who many are we in the world?

According to the International Programs Center, U.S. Census Bureau, the total population

of the World, projected to April /11/2010 at 08:30 UTC (EST+5) is 6,814,104,460. Yes

this is the estimated current population of the world and this figure starts to grow and non

stop. Worldometers on the other hand reported that the current population as of April 11,

2010 is 6,837,620, 666. The sudden population boom is one of the factors that contribute

to rapid resource depletion in the world. And countries that experience excess population

will likely to exports its people since job are already filled up. Countries that do not have

a clear population control formula will some how experience population shook. Where

space is to congested that the existence of to much population it self creates panic.

Shortage of food will occur in the near future, in the Philippines alone 90% of rice

which is the staple food of the Filipino is produces locally which means that the

remaining 10% is imported to other countries like Vietnam and others, which also means

that if these other countries will stop the exporting their rice 10 out of every 100 Filipino

will starve.

7
In china one child policy is adopted because of over population. In addition

American population is projected to increase by nearly 130 million people - the

equivalent of adding another four states the size of California - by the year 2050. By the

year 2011 the estimated population will be 7 billion, in 2025 it will be 8 billion and in the

year 2050 it will be 9.4 Billion.

Growth rate

An estimated 4.3 people are born every second around the world

The rapid and non stop growth of the population in the world is alarming, the

decongestion of space in cities forces people to go abroad, even oversees people who are

living in one place can not deny the multitude of people in one place. People in the rural

Areas start to migrate even on the year 1850, where people in the rural areas migrate on

urban areas to live.

Land resources

Land is one of the most important resources human being ever had since it is

where most of the population get their food, the most obvious is farming, planting

different kind of agricultural product which include both edible and non edible product

which can be immediately used or need further processing to be a finish good which later

be consumed by the population. Some of this edible product include agricultural crop

which can be immediately consumed like banana which is the most abundant fruit in the

world, apple, grain product like cereal, rice, wheat and alike, non edible include cotton,

cotton seed threes used for textile production, some other valuable resources are plants

that are propagated to be process as medicines, especially this are food supplements

which are massed produced to be consumed by any one who needs them.

Important facts: In the Philippines

Total land area 300,000 square kilometes

Forest land more than 50% the remaining is the disposable

Land, which includes agricultural land

9
Land is not only used for vegetation purposes, an example is the benefit that it

gives in creating modern infrastructure. Metal comes from the earth and then smelted and

then is further processed to get rid of its impurities. Since the beginning of the

metallurgical age this is after the new stone age human being made endless used of

metals, the advancements of the modern agriculture can be associated by the evolution of

the continuous used innovation and improvement on the used of metals and steels.

The human race progress to one step of what they call evolution, it also follow

that the knowledge that is passed to time to time, the ability and skills of the generation is

passed to another generation hence living standard improve. Because of the skill set that

is passed to another generation like the art of metallurgy.

Another is mining the founding of valuable metals like gold diamond silver etc,

the exploration and exploitation of fuel like oil and other fossil fuel like coal.

Who killed who?

Fifty percent of the wetlands, 90% of the northwestern old-growth forests, and 99% of

the tall-grass prairie have been destroyed in the last 200 years.

10
Science creates

We are not rats!! But we have the same thing in common struggle for survival

The birth of science indeed made us human being this far. As science evolved human

being also learn new thing that is new to him. Science is the door that gave us a handicap

to push through and help us to understand things around us. Things that are created by

science which can be of different sort are widely available everywhere and anywhere.

The creation of new machines and technologies with the help of science has a great

impact on the lives of people around the world. One is the creation of penicillin which is

discovered by Alexander Fleming which lessen the mortality rate of human being until

now, the well known antibiotic in the world and now more and more drugs like this is

being created or distributed in the world, maybe hundred of this kind that has more

promising effect. The creation of computers which lead to making of human being work

more easy and accurate, especially in the business sector and scientific and technological

research.

11
The Science of being a rat

Rats will always be rats

Rats are known for their ability to survive any where, and for this reason as long

as they survive they don’t care on what will be the effect of their doing, rats indeed will

be rats and it is expected that rats will behave like rats. This case is acceptable if a man is

asked if its ok that rat will behave like one. But a human being acting like rat? Is very

disturbing isn’t it!! But in reality there are human beings who act like this and mind you

this is not beggars on the streets who roam around every day in the roads. These are the

people who behave like rats, people who are wearing a coat and tie and driving

A car on the streets, this can be a CEO or a share holder isn’t it. People now a day don’t

care how much garbage they throw every day, especially the industrial sectors whereas

the Toxic chemicals release by the industries in land, water, and air (tons) only this year

is amounted to 2, 714, 665 a huge rat waste indeed. In economics this can be called an

economic NIMBY (not in my back yard) this is where if some thing do not disturb me

therefore it is irrelevant. Waste for example of a single individual, where is thrown in a

dump site is irrelevant for him but if a garbage is throws in this lawn well that is making

a relevant thing relevant since the action intrudes another. Just like industries who dump

waste in the water lines, like river and this businesses like this have paid more than

million or billions of dollars because of their contribution in destroying the environment

and putting peoples life in danger.

12
Like rats people and industries now struggle for survival but the thing is, their actions are

indeed planned but they are as good as unplanned. Because of failing to consider few but

vital action that may create a big effect, in the lives of many, waste are not destroyed they

are stored, we live in a cage like rats there is no way to go and each action taken has an

effect.

Let’s go back to business

News inputs

The emergence of business According to UN Food and Agriculture Organization,

and the International Water Management Institute, it shows that the current food crisis is

less a crisis of production than a crisis of waste. Tossing food away is like leaving the tap

running

In poorer countries, a majority of uneaten food is lost before it has a chance to be

consumed. Depending on the crop, an estimated 15 to 35 percent of food may be lost in

the field. Another 10 to15 percent is discarded during processing, transport and storage,

the brief states.

In richer countries, production is more efficient but waste is greater, the report

says. "People toss the food they buy and all the resources used to grow ship and produce

the food along with it."

13
As this wasted food rots in landfills it generates methane, a gas that causes

climate change and is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

In the United States, for instance, as much as 30 percent of food, worth some

US$48.3 billion, is thrown away. "That's like leaving the tap running and pouring 40

trillion liters of water into the garbage can - enough water to meet the household needs of

500 million people,"

The U.S. accumulates at least 236 million tons per year of municipal solid waste

alone, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The United Nations and

other agencies estimate worldwide annual waste production at more than 1 billion tons,

and some estimates go as high as 1.3 billion.

Paper and paperboard, food scraps and plastics dominate this waste. If we go back

a few years to 1960, the level of waste generation was about one-third of what it is now,

so it said that we are learning to produce trash at a greater rate. Each U.S. citizen

produces an average of more than 1,600 pounds of waste per year. (forbs.com)

She also got TB

When you say TB it is a common decease, tuberculosis in medical term, the rat cage does

not only focus on the rats living on the cage but it also considers the cage where the rats

are kept. We all know that the rats inside the cage are alive, alive enough and struggling

for their everyday survival.

14
In this explanation it will answer why the cage got sick and what does this rat have some

thing to do with it. Now let us examine the aspect of the cage decease, first the cage in

this article is not just an ordinary cage, it is a living cage it is designed to sustain it self

and the life inside it, but of course if the rats inside the cage doesn’t know who to take

care of the cage what happen is the rats inside it will act as a virus destroying the cage

from the inside. Having TB doesn’t always speak about people let us say that the cage is

the earth in this article before this explanation has been introduced it is said that too many

chemical and poisonous substance is either released on the water, air or land. This case

leads to the spread of decease and this decease is not a bacteria nor virus that harms the

body of a human being rather this sickness targets the earth it self, the cage where the rats

are kept. And who is the one responsible? The rats them selves, we can see that from the

very beginning of this article the continuous population boom, the technological

advancement, the never ending search for new need, resource imbalance which lead to

deprivation of other that needs them, the continuous improper waste disposal, the

consumption rate of every individual, and the depletion of resources. This will lead to the

destruction of the cage, what is sad is we are not rats to be transferred to one cage to

another what is certain is if the cage die rats will also dies.

What matters now is to choose. Are we good bacteria or bad, are we willing to

change for the better or not, imitate the rat’s habit or act as a Stewart.
