Temperatures in the body are not unifrom throughout; there are large differences
betweencoreandshelltemperatures.under normal conditions,the average gradient
between skin and deep body is about 4C at rest, but in the cold the difference in temperature
may be 20C or more. Thus the temperatures at various locations under various conditions.
Muscles can generate more heat or less heat but cannot cool the body. In contrast,
sweat production influences the heat distribution through the body and control heat loss or
gain.vascular activities affect the heat distribution through the body and control heat loss or
gain, but they do not generate energy.Muscular,vascular,and sweat-production functions
cooperatively regulate the body heat content in interaction with the external climate.
Various temperature sensors are located in the core and the shell of the body(Chapter
4). Hot sensors generate signals(sent to the hypothalamus) particularly in the range of
approximately 38 to 43C. Cold sensors are most sensitive from about 35 to 15C. There is
some overlap in the sensations ofcool and warm in the intermediate range.between
about 15 and 45C, perception of eithercoldorhotcondition is highly adaptable.below
15C and above 45C the human temperature sensors are less discriminating but also less
adapting. Aparadoxicaleffect is that, around 45C, sensors again signalcoldwhile in fact
the temperature is rather hot.

The human regulatory system must achieve two suitabe temperature gradients;from
the core to the skin and from the skin to the surroundings. The gradient from the core to the
skin is internally the most important,because overheating or undercooling of the key tissues
in the brain and the trunk must be avoided,even at the cost of overheating or undercooling the
shell.
Thermal homeostasis is primarily achieved by regulation of the blood flow from deep
tissues and muscles to lungs and skin. In the lungs, 10 to 25 percent of the dissipated heat is
transmitted to the environment;most heat is exchanged at the skin.
APPLICATION
The thermal environment is determined by four physical factors: air (or water) temperature,
humidity, air (or water) movement, and temperature of surfaces that exchange energy by
radiation. The combination of these four factors determines the physical conditions of the
climate and our perception of the climate.

Cold environment, skin temperature. Two scales, the Bedford and the ASHRAE scales, are
widely used to assess individual thermal comfort: as shown In table 5-1, they yield similar
results (Youle. I990).
In the past, various techniques were used. to assess the combined effect. of some or all
four environmental factors and to express these in one model,chart,or index. They resulted in
several empirical thermal indices,which are based on data collected from subjects who

the produced sweat cools the skin. Recruitment of sweat glands from different areas of the
body varies among individuals. The overall amount of sweat developed and evaporated
depends very much on clothing, envuonment, work requirements, and the individuals
acclimatization.
lf heat transfer by blood distribution and sweat evaporation is insufcnent, mus-
cular activities must be reduced to lower the amount of energy generated through metabolic
processes. In fact, this is the nal and necessary action of the body, if otherwise the core
temperature would exceed a tolerable limit.
EXAMPLE
If the body has to choose between unacceptable overheating and continuing to perform
physical work, the choice will be in favor of core-temperature maintenance, which means
reduction or cessation of work activities.
APPLICATION
There are several signs of heat strain on the body. The rst is sweat rate. Instrenuous
exercises and hot climates, several liters of sweat may be produced in an hour. Sweat begins
to drip off the skin when the sweat generation has reached about one-third of the maximal
evaporative capacity. Of course, sweat running down the skin contributes very little to heat
transfer.
Heat strain increases the circulatory activities. Cardiac output must be enlarged, which
is mostly brought about by a higher heart rate. This may be associated with a reduction in
systolic blood pressure. Another ,sign of heat strainis a rise in core temperature, which must
be counteractd'before the temperature exceeds the sustainable limit.
The water balance within the body provides another sign of heat strain. Dehydration,
indicated by the loss of only I or 2 percent of body weight, can critically affect the ability of
the body to control its functions. Therefore, the fluid level must be maintained,best by
frequent drinking of small amounts of water.Normally, it is not necessary to add salt to
drinking water,since in western diets the salt in the food is more than sufficient to resupply
the salt lost with the sweat.
Among the first reactions to heavy exercise in excessive heat are sensations of
discomfor and perhaps skin eruptions,prickly heat,associated with sweating.as a result of
sweating, so-called heat cramps may develop,which

are muscle Spasms related to local lack of salt. They may occur after quickly drinking large
amounts of uid, which dilutes the body urds. Heat exhaustion is a combined function of
dehydration and overloading of the circulatory system. Associated effects are fatigue,
headache, nausea, and dizziness, often accompanied by giddy behavior. Heat syncope
indicates a failure of the circulatory system, demonstrated by fainting. Heat stroke indicates
an overloading of both the circulatory and sweating systems and is associated with hot dry
skin, increased core temperature, and mental confusion. Table 5-3 lists symptoms, causes, and
treatment of heat-related disorders.
When human skin touches hot surfaces, the risk of a burn exists. The actual critical
contact temperature depends on the duration of the contact and on the material of the
contacted object or uid. The shorter the contact, the higher temperatures can be tolerated, as
listed in Table 5-4.

the human body has few natural defenses against a cold environment. Most of the
actions taken are behavioral in nature, such as putting on suitably heavy clothing.
in a cold climate, the body must conserve heat while producing it. To conserve .
heat, the temperature of the skin is lowered, reducing the temperature difference
against the Outside. This is done by displacing the circulating blood toward the core, away
from the skin; for example, the blood ow in the ngers may be reduced percent of that in a
moderate climate. Thus, cold fingers and toes may result,with possible damage to the tissue if
the temperatures get close to freezing.
The other major reaction of the body to a cold environment is the metabolic heat
generation. This may occur involuntarily,by shivering (thermogenesis). Shivering usually
begins in the neck, apparently because warm is important to supply blood to the brain. The
onset of shivering is normally preceded by an increase in overall muscle tone in response to
body cooling. With increased ring rates of motor units (see Chapter I), but no actual
movements generated. a feeling of stillness is generally experienced. Then suddenly shivering
begins, caused by muscle units ring at different frequencies of repetition (rate coding) and
out of phase with each other (recruitment coding). Since no mechanical work is done to the
outside, the total activity is transformed into heat production, allowing an increase in the
metabolic rate to up to 4 times the resting rate. If the body does not become warm, shivering
may become rather violent; its motor-unit innervations become synchronized so that large
muscle units are contracted. While such shivering can generate heat that is ve or more times
the resting metabolic rate, it can be maintained only for a short period. There may be another
mechanism to produce heat, called nonshivering thermogenesis: body organs, particularly in
the liver and the viscera, increase their metabolism. The existence of this response in humans
is debated. Ofcourse, muscular activities also can be done voluntarily, such as by increasing
the dynamic muscular work performed, or by moving body segments, contracting museles,
exing the ngers, etc. Such dynamic muscular work may easily increase the metabolic rate
to ten or more times the resting rate.
EXAMPLE
To reduce the temperature difference to the outside, the body lowers skin temperature in a
cold environment. Thus, the skin is rst exposed to cold damage,while the body core is
protected as long as possible.

APPLICATION
Hypothermia can occur very quickly if a person is exposed to-cold water. While one
can endure up to two hours in water at 15C, one is helpless in water of 5C after 20 to 30
minutes. The survival time in cold water can be increased by wearing clothing that provides
insulation; also, obese persons with much insulating adipose tissue are at an advantage over
skinny ones. Floating motion less results in less metabolic energy being generated and spent
than when swimming vigorously.
How cold does it feel? ln a cold environment, a subjects decision to stay in the cold or to
seek shelter depends on the subjective assessment of how cold the my surface or the body
core actually is. It is dangerous if aperson fails to perceive and to react to the bodys signals
that it is becoming dangerously cold, or if the body temperature becomes so low that further
cooling is below the threshold of perception.
The perception of the bodys getting cold depends upon signals received from surface
thermal receptors, from sensors in the body core, and from some combinaton of these signals.
As skin temperatures decrease below 35.5C, the intensity of the cold sensation increases
cold sensation is strongest near 20C, but at lower temperatures of perception the intensity
decreases. it is often difcult to separate feel of cold from pain and discomfort.
The conditions of cold exposure may greatly inuence the perceived, coldness. It can make
quite a difference whether one is exposed to cold air (with or without movement) or to cold
water, whether or not one wears protective clothing, and what one is actually doing. When the
temperature plunges, each downward step can generate an overshoot sensation of cold
sensor receptors, which react very quickly not only
To the difference in temperature,but also to the rate of change. Yet,if the temperature
stabilizes, the cold sensations become smaller as one adapts to the condition. Exposure to
very cold water accentuates the overshoot phenomenon observed in cold air. The reason may
be that the thermal conductivity of water is about a thousand times greater than that of cold
air at the same temperature. Thus, cold water causes a convective heat loss that may be
twenty-ve times that of cold air (Hoffman and Pozos, 1989).
EXAMPLE
In experiments,subject (wearing a flotation suit) were immersed into cold water 10C. Their
temperatures at groin, back, and rectum were continuously recorded, and the subjects rated
how cold they perceived these areas to be. The results of the experiment showed that the
subjects were unable to reliably assess how cold they actually were. Neither their core nor
surlace temperatures correlated with their cold sensations (Hoffman and Pozos, I989).
Altogether, the result of many experiments and experiences indicate that the
subjuctive sensation of cold is a poor,possibly dangerous indicator of core and surface
temperature of the body.Measuring ambient temperature,humadity,air movement and
exposure time and reacting to these physical measures is probably a better strategy than
relying on subjective sensations.
Acclimatization
While a healthy and well-trained person acclimatization more easily than somebody
in poor phsycalcondition,training cannot replace acclimatization. However,if phsycal work
must be performed in a hot climate,then such work should also be included in the
acclimatization phase.
Adjustment to heat take place whether the climate is hot and dry,or hot and humid.
Heat acclimatization seems to be unaffected by the type of work permormed,whether heavy
and short or moderate but continuous. It is important,during acclimatizationand throughout
heat exposure,that fluid and salt losses be replaced.
Acclimatization to cold is much less pronounced; in fact, there is doubt that True
physiological adjustment to moderate cold takes place when appropriate clothing is worn.
The rst reaction of the body exposed to cold temperature is shivering the generation of
metabolic heat to counteract heat loss. Also, some changes in local blood ow are apparent.
There are so-called local acclimatizations, particularly in blood ow In the hands and face.
However, normally the adjustment to cold conditions is more one of proper clothing and
work behavior than of pronounced changes in physiological and regulatory functions. Thus,
the body has little or no need to change its rate of heat production or, relatedly, of food intake,
in normally cold" temperatures.
'There are no great differences between females and males with resPect to their ability
to adapt to either hot or cold climates, with women possibly at a slightly higher risk for heat
exhaustion and collapse and for cold injuries to extremities. However, these slight statistical
tendencies can be easily counteracted by ergonomic means and may not be obvious at all
when observing only a few persons of either gender.
Hot and cold climatic conditions (as well as air pollution and high altitudediscussed later)
affect in various ways the human abilities to perform short or long,moderate or heavy work.
The following text is a synopsis of the known effects for use by engineers and managers
(Kroemer, 1991).
Effects of heat. When exposed to whole-body heating, the human body must maintain
its core temperaturenear 37 Celsius. It does so by raising its skin temperature, increasing
blood ow to the skin, accelerating heart rate, and enlarging cardiac output. The change in
blood routing reduces the blood that can be supplied to muscles and internal organs. Yet, if.
muscles must work, their raised metabolism poses increased demands on the cardiovascular
system.
Effects on Muscles. An increase of muscle temperature above normal does not affect
the maximal isometric contraction capability of muscle tissue, but power output of muscles is
reduced at higher (and lower) temperatures. Muscle overheating "ffiaccelerates the metabolic
rate, which can make the muscle ineffective if it must work over some period of time. The
loss of power and endurance owing to excessive muscle temperature can be counteracted by
lowering muscle temperature before exercise This reduces the cardiovascular Stain and blood
lactic acid concentration. and de-pletes muscle glycogen at a lower rate.
Dehydration. When working in a hot environment,the body loses water,it gets dehydrated.
Acute water loss, incurred in a short time (in a few hours or less), called hypohdration, does
not reduce isometric muscle strength (or reaction times) if the water loss is less than 5
perscent body weight. However, fast and large water loss (such as introduced by diueretics)
generates the risk of heat exhaustion,which is primarily the result of fluid volume depletion.
Dehydation reduces the bodys capacity to perform work of the aerobic or endurance type.
To counteract water loss,on must drink fluid .plain water is best. If sterenuous
activities last longer than one or two hours,diluted sugar additives may help to post pone the
development of fatigue by reducing muscle glycogen utilization and improving fluid fluid-
electrolyte absorption in the small intestine. Regular liberally salted food during meals ( as
customary in the united states) is normally sufficient to counteract salt loss. In fact,salt
tablets have been shown to generate stomach upset ,nausea or vomiting in up to 20 perscent
of all athletes whoo took them
Acclimatizatin. The body can adapt to heat ,but not dehydaration. Most heat acclimatization
takes place during the first week of exposure. First, the cardiovascular system adjust,with
blood plasma volume enlarged and heart rate decreased from its initial reaction to heat.
Liberal drinking of water during the acclimatization period is helpful. Body core temperature
is back to normal after5 to 8 days in the heat. Thechloride concentration in the sweat takes up
to 10 days to adapt,as does the production of sweat volume and its controlled evaporation on
the skin. Thus, within two weeks of staying in hot climate the body has acclimated
completely. (most of the heat acclimatization is a lost after two or three weeks of return to
normal conditions)
Effect on Mental Performance. It is difficult to evaluate the effects of heat (or cold)
on mental or intellectual performance beacuse of large subjective varitions an a lack of
pratical, yet objective, testing methods. However, as a rule, mental performance deteriorates
wit rising room temperatutes,starting at about 25 C for the unacclimatized person. That
theshold increases to 30 or even 35 degrees if the individual is acclimatized to head. Brain
functions are particulary vulnerable to heat; keeping the head cool improves the tolerance to
elevated deep body temperature. A high level of motivation may aslo counteract some of the
detrimental effect of heat. Thus, in laboratory test, mental performance is usually not
significantly affected by heat as high as 40 C (104 F) WBGT.
APPLICATION
Working in the Heat : summary. Short term maximal muscle-strength exertion is not
affected by heat or water loss. The ability to perform high-in tensity endurance-type phsycal
work is severely reduced during acclimatization to heat, which takes normally up to two
weeks. Even after having achieved acclimaztization,the demand on the cardiovascular sytem
for disspation and for blood supply to the muscle continue to complete. The body prefers heat
dissipation,with a proportional reductio of performance capability .Dehydrattion further
reduces the ability of the body to work;hypohydration poses acute health risk.Metntal
perrformance is usually not affected by heat as 40 C WBGT.
Effect of cold. As in a hot climate, the body must maintain its core termperature
near 37 C in a cold environment. When exposed to cold, the human body fitst responds by
peripheral vasoconstriction,which lowers skin temperature in order to decrease heat loss
through the skin. Such reduction in blood flow occurs in all exposed areas of the body with
the exception of the head,where up to 25 percent of the total heat loss can take place. If
control of blood flow away from the periphery is insufficient to prevent heat loss,shivering
sets in,which is reguler musculer conctraction mechanism,but without generating external
work,since all energy is converted to heat. Muscular activities of shivering and of phsycal
work require increased oxygen uptake,which is associated with increased cardiac output.
Effect on body Temperature. The two opposing cardiac responses to cold and exercise
affect body temperature. At light work in the cold,core temperature tends to fall after about
one hour activity. Cold sensations in the skin regulary initiate reactions leading to lowered
skin temperature,yet areas over active muscles can remain warmer due to the heat generated
by muscle metabolism. Thus,in the cold,relatively much heat is lost throught convection (and
evaporation). Which of the opposing physiological cold responses predominates depens on
the special conditions on ambient temperature,type of body activity, and the clothing
insulation.
While one can feel the coldness of air in the upper respiratory tract,the warming
efficiency of the upper respiratory passages is sufficient to preclude cold injuries to lung
tissue under normal conditions. Discomfort and constriction of airways may be felt when
inspiring very cold air through the mouth. Yet,air temperature is seldom too cold for exercise
and physical work
