CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Language is one of the very important communication means in life of

everyday. Language is the ability to acquire and use complex systems of

communication, particulary the human ability to do so, and a language is any

specific example of such a system. The scientific study of language is called

linguistics. Language is processed in many different locations in the human brain.

human acquire language through social interaction in early childhood, and

children generally speak fluently when they are approximately three years old.

The use of language is deeply entrenched in human culture. Therefore, in addition

to its strictly communicative uses, language also has many social and cultural

uses, such as signifying group identity, social stratification, as well as social

grooming and entertainment.

Teaching English and Foreign Language (TEFL) refers to teaching English

to students whose first language is not English. TEFL can occur in the students

own country, either within the state school system, or privately, e.g., in an after

hour language school or with a tutor. TEFL can also take place in an English-

speaking immigrant country, for people who have moved (either temporarily for

school or work, or permanently). TEFL Teachers may be native or non-native

speakers of English. Other acronyms for TEFL are TESL TESOL Teaching

English as a Second or Other Language, and ESL English as a Second

Language. However ESL is a term typically used in English speaking countries.

Learning is defined as the modification or strengthening of behavior trough

experiencing. Learning not merely mindful of but rather wide of from that,

namely of experience.

Learning English many our which can matter know, like speaking, reading,

and writing and listening. Therefore learning English of vital importance for every

people. With have capital to learn English we earn to have interaction with

everybody in this world.

In general, students at junior high school in learning English. They think

that learning English that is very difficult and drag. The experience of the

researcher when teaching programmatic junior high school, the students have less

interest towards learning English, so the writer interest to conduct a research

which entitles: THE OBSTACLES FACED BY THE STUDENTS OF SMP

PGRI MARINDING IN LEARNING ENGLISH.

A. Problem Statement

Based on the background above, the writer formulates the problem as

follow:

What obstacles are faced by the students of SMP PGRI Marinding in

learning English?

B. Objective of the Research

Referring to the problem statement above, the objective of the research is

to find out the obstacles faced by the students of SMP PGRI Marinding in learning

English.

C. Significance of the Research

The result of this research are expect give information for English teachers

in teaching English in particular in SMP PGRI Marinding. The result of this

research presumably can be benefit to all.

D. Research Methodology

In this research the writer used qualitative method, where the writer

described the obstacles faced by the students of SMP PGRI Marinding in Learning

English.

E. Key Word Defenitions

1. Obstacles is the problem faced by students and synonym of problem.

2. Learning is a process change of individual behaviour through interaction

with environment.

3. Learning English is a process that is done every individual to acquire

knowledge abaout English such as vocabulary, grammar,etc.

F. Sequence of The Presentation

This research consists of five chapters. Chapter one: Introduction. This

chapter deals with background of the study, problems statement, objectives of the

study, significances of the study, key words definition, and sequences of

presentation. Chapter two: Review of Related Literature. This chapter deals with

previous studies, review of related literature and theoretical framework. Chapter

three : Research. Method. This chapter deals with setting, data sources, population

and sample, research instrument, data collection, and data analysis. Chapter four is

finding and discussion, and chapter five is conclusion and suggestion.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERRATURE AND THEORETICAL

FRAMEWORK

A. Previous Study

Mende (2012) with the title The Problem of Teaching Reading Faced by

The English Teacher at SMP Kristen Makale. . He found three problem, they are;

the limited vocabularies which were mastered by the students, finding the

meaning of difficulties vocabularies and the last one is answering the questions

from the text implicitly.

Tangki (2013) The problem in speaking English faced by the fourth

semester student of English Department of UKI Toraja : FKIP, The result of of his

research is there are several factors that caused the problem in learning English.

They are lack of grammar, lack of vocabularies, ashamed, and lack of self-

confidance. Based on result above the writer conclude that there are many

problems that faced by the students in speaking English.

The researcher above tried to find out the obstacles that faced by the

students in English . They focus on problems in reading and speaking. The first

researcher uses the junior high school students as the respondents, and the second

researcher uses college students as the respondents.

In this research, the writer would focus on the obstacles that faced by the

students in learning English. It means that the researcher tries to find general

problem in learning English. The respondent in this research are students in

junior high school students (SMP PGRI Marinding).

B. Review of Related Literature

1. Learning

There are several explanations about the learning from many sources as we

follow :

Atinkson (1993:46) says that learning is a relatively permanent change in

behavior (sic: its American of course) that result from practice.

Kimble & Garmezy (1993:46) says that learning is a a realatively

permanent change in a behavioral tendency and is the result of reinforced

practice.

Slameto (2003:2) explains Suatu proses perubahan yaitu perubahan

tingkah laku sebagai hasil dari interaksi dengan lingkungannya dalam memenuhi

kebutuhan hidupnya atau belajar ialah suatu proses usaha yang dilakukan

seseorang untuk memperoleh suatu perubahana tingkah laku yang baru secara

keseluruhan, sebagai hasil pengalamannya sendiri dalam interaksi dengan

lingkungannya (a process of change, that is changes of behavior, as a result from

interaction with their circle in fulfill of their life need or learning is a process of

someone exertion to get a new changes of behavior as a whole, as a result of

himself or herself experience in interaction with her or his circle.

Slavin (2006:134) explains, Learning is usually defined as a change in an

individual caused by experience. Changes coused by development.

Brooks & Brooks (1993:126) says thatfrom a constructivist view, on the

other hand, learning is the process of constructing knowledge-not merely

obtaining it in social environments. The theory is situated learning consistent

with this view assert that what we come to know and understand is fundamentally

a product of the learning situation and the neture of learning activity.

Problem-based Learning (PBL) has become a popular of this paper is to

discuss the interpersonal skills necessary to enchance PBL, and incorporated into

the curriculm. It can be concluded that learning is an activity that is very

important for everyone to be able to dig what we want to know and change the

mindset of human.

2. Factors that support learning English

Learning process can be success if it support by many variables. In

Ontario Literacy Report (2004:21), there are several items that can support

learning process. They are as follows :

a. A productive environment for literacy learning offers spaces,

containing movable furniture and equipment in which students can

gather to work collaboratively in flexible groupings and

indenpendently.

b. Junior students need easy access to a wide variety of texts at a range of

reading levels.

c. Junior students are drawn into reading and writing by texts that reflect

their interest, abilieties, and backgrounds, including resources in their

first language.

d. Well-equipped classroom and school libraries help students who do not

have access to information and technology to bridge the gap with those

who do.

e. Information technology and assistive technology can greatly expand

the junior students access to a world of ideas and a wealth of learning

aids. Todays students are part of a technologically complex world that

demands new ways of communicating.

The factors that can supports students in learning is how we provide good

facilities so that students are more creative and interesting in teaching and

learning process.

3. The problem of learning English

a. Grammar

Wilson (1998:20) says that English Grammar is complex, make it

difficult to remember, master and use logically. Ensuring you use the correct

grammar can be tricky, especially when you are in conversation with someone and

they are speaking at an alarmingly fast pace. Learning grammar is like learning to

drive, you can learn all of the theory, rules and regulations, but you wont be good

at it unless you practice it and it starts to become second nature to you. Grammar

is extremely important, incorrect use of grammar can confuse the person you are

speaking to and even change the meaning of what you are communicating, whats

more is native English speakers are hyper aware of grammar and will notice

almost immediately if grammartical error is made, even if this is the smallest of

errors, English speakers are incredibly proud of the language and look

negaativelly on it being used incorrectly.

The writer concludes that grammar is one important role in learning

English, where the mastery of grammar that we have , we can express it through

reading, speaking, writing, and listhening. Students must be able to mastery

grammar.

b. Vocabulary

Rivers (1991:117) states that it is often a challenge, particulary when it

comes to verb variations and understanding which tense should be used in various

situations. English has one of the biggets vocabularies of all languages, and it

can be very confusing for non-English speaker to master. Using vocabulary

inaccurately is incredibly noticeable to anyone whos first language is English,

thought it doesnt often change the meaning of your text, it does weaken it.

Walkins in Katrina (2002:2) states that vocabulary would be initially less

important than grammar, in that without grammar, there is only very little that can

be conveyed, but without vocabulary, there is nothing that can be conveyed. This

indicates that vocabulary is a very significant factor in learning and using

language since without possessing it, people will not be able to use the language.

The writer concludes that the mastery of vocabulary is supporting aspect

in learning English. In vocabulary mastery encounter many challenges that

sometimes make the student do not care.

c. Pronunciaction

Pronunciation is the way a word or language is spoken, or the manner in

which someone utters a word. If one is said to have correct pronunciation, then

it refers to both within a particular dialect. A word can be spoken in different ways

by various individuals or groups, depending on many factors, such as: duration of

the cultural exposure of their childhood, the location of their current residence,

speech or voice disorder, their ethnic group, their social class, or their education.

Morley (1998:154) says that knowing how to pronounce words in English

can be very difficult as it isnt always obvious. English speakers have been

tought these from an early age, which is how they know not to pronounce the k

on knight they are thought the subtleties in how to pronounce something to

communicate the right message. Furthermore, depending on the first language of

the English student, it can often be difficult to pronounce certain words properly,

having not ever had to create that phonetic sound before.

Pronunciation in English is not easy as we imagine. Specially to the

students, they need more time to practice pronunciation in English.

d. Writing

Wolf (2000:48) says that the students starting out in the world of

academia seemed to be having problems with basic spelling and grammar. It is

also a problems that some students lack the ability to formulate ideas and to write

cohesive texts.

Richards and Renandya (2002:303). Many students are not interesting in

learning writing. One if the chief difficulties young people feel uneasy in writing

is lack of matters. They do not easily find anything to say about a subject. This is

natural, because their experience a general reading are limited.

Nation (2009:112) says that writing is an activity that can usefully be

prefared for by work in other skills of listening, speaking, and reading. This

preparation can make it possible for words that have been used receptively to

come into productive use.

e. Speaking

Speaking is one of the four language skills that are not successful in

teaching and learning process at school. Speaking needs practice and practice.

Most of the students are able to understand English text but they do not have the

ability to speak or to communicate in English. In the other hand, the teachers more

focus their teaching in reading and structure, it couse the students get difficulty in

other skills especially in speaking.

Cameron (2001:40) mentions that speaking is the active use of language to

express meanings so that other people can make sense of them. To speak in the

foreign language in order to share understandings with other people requires

attention to precise details of the language. A speaker needs to find most

appropriate words and the correct grammar to convey meaning accurately and

precisely, and needs to organize the discourse so that a listener will understand.

Other problems that are commonly observed in the language classroom are

related to individual learners personalities and attitudes to the learning process

and learning speaking in particular.

They can be defined as follows (Ur 1995: 121):

1. Inhibition fear of making mistakes, losing face, criticism; shyness;

2. Nothing to say learners have problems with finding motives to speak,

formulating opinions or relevant comments;

3. Low or uneven participation often caused by the tendency of some

learners to dominate in the group;

4. Mother-tongue use particularly common in less disciplined or less

motivated classes, learners find it easier or more natural to express

themselves in their native language.

f. Listening

Wenden (1986:46) states that it should be noted that the learners

perfection of their listening problem and strategies can affect their comprehension

both positively and negatively. Thus, in order to help studentsget improved with

their listening skill, it is needed finding out their listhening problems which couse

difficulties to them. The problems in listening were accompanied with the four

following factors: the message, the speaker, the listener and the physical setting.

Higgins (1995:47) says that the problem were believed to couse by the

speech rate, vocabulary and pronunciation. The problems of the students were for

the speed of delivery, new terminology and concept, difficulty in focusing and the

physical environment.

C. Theoretical Framework

Many students find problems in learning English. It is caused by various

factors. Such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, writing, etc. These factors

can be found almost in every school. The students do not have a good ability of

English.

In this research, the writer would focus on the problems that faced by the

students in learning English. It means that the researcher tries to find general

problem in learning English. The respondent in this research are students in

junior high school students of SMP PGRI Marinding. The writer got information

by using interview and questionnaire.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

A. Setting

This research held at SMP PGRI Marinding of Tana Toraja, for the

students of SMP PGRI Marinding in academic 2015/2016. It is located at Jl. Poros

Lemo Marinding, Tana Toraja and had been in January 2016.

B. Data Sources

1. Primary Sources

The primary source of the study was collected from the students of

SMP PGRI Marinding, through interview and questionnaire.

2. Secondary Sources

To complete the primary sources the writer went to library, read some

thesis, some books, and look for the source information from internet relate

to researching into the relevant subject.

C. Population and Sample

1. Population

The Population of this research were the students of SMP PGRI

Marinding in academic year 2015/2016. It consisted of 121 students and

divided into six classes (VII A : 20, VII B: 20, VIII A: 22, VIII B: 19, IX A:

18, IX B: 22).

2. Sample

This research used snowball method, so the writer took 30 students as

sample of SMP PGRI Marinding.

D. Research Instrument

The instruments, in this research the writer used interview and

questionnaire to know what the obstacles faced by the students of SMP PGRI

Marinding in learning English.

E. Data Collection

1. Library Research

The writer looked for some books in library as basic in this research,

reading and searching information from internet.

2. Field Research

In collecting data in the field research, the writer got the data from

interview and questionnaire.

F. Data Analysis

In order to got the require data, the writer used the library research and

field research. The researcher analyzed the data into qualitative description.

CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

A. FINDINGS

In this part, the writer presents the result of data analysis to know about the

obstacles faced by the students of SMP PGRI Marinding in learning English. The

data from interview and questionnaire are presented as follow:

1. The data analysis obtained from the interview.

This section contains of what the obstacles faced by the students in

learning English. Here are the result of interview section:

a. The difficulties in learning English.

Based on the result of students interview, it found that the difficulties in

learning English are students difficult in pronouncing the words and lack

of vocabularies. It can be shown from students interview below:

Student 1 : Saya sulit dalam mengucapkan kata-kata dalam bahasa

Student 2 : Saya sulit dalam pengucapan katanya. Karena kadang
saya membacanya dengan lurus.
[I difficult in pronouncing words. Because Sometimes I read the words in
alphabetically.]
Students 6 : Saya sulit mengucapkan kata yang baru saya dengar.
Karena kadang-kadang kata tersebut memiliki huruf yang banyak (kata
yang panjamg).

words has a letter that many (long word).]
Students 8 : Saya sulit mengucapkan kata. Karena kata dalam bahasa
Inggris sulit untuk diucapkan.
[I difficult to pronouncing the word. Because the words in English is
difficult to unpronounceable.]

b. The problem faced when learning English grammar.

Based on the result of students interview, it found that the

difficulties in learning English are students difficult in preparing sentence,

determine To be on tenses and sentence in making them lazy to learning

grammar. It can be shown from students interview below:

Students 7 : Sulit menyusun kaliamat dengan tepat. Karena saya tidak


mengerti penggunaan tenses, sehingga saya sulit dalam menyusun
kalimat.
[I difficulty in compile a sentences appropriately. Because I dont
understand the used of tenses, so that I difficult to compile a sentence.]
Students 12 : Saya kesulitan dalam menyusun sebuah kalimat. Karena
biasa teks dalam bahasa Inggris tidak beraturan.
[I difficulty in compile a sentence. Because usual text in English irregular.]
Students 14 : Saya kesulitan dalam menyusun kalimat. Karena saya
tidak paham dalam penggunaan tenses.

tenses.]

c. The often incorrectly said word in English.

Based on the result of students interview, it found that the difficulties in

learning English are students difficulty in pronouncing the word. It can be

shown from students interview below:

Student 14 : Iya.Karena saya tidak tahu cara mengucapkannya.
[Yes.Because I dont know how to pronounce.]
Students 15 : Iya...Karena sering lupa cara pengucapannya.
[Yes. Because I often forgets to pronounce.]

d. The difficulties in speaking in English.

Based on the result of students interview, it found that the difficulties in

learning English are students difficulty in pronouncing words and reading

long sentences. It can be shown from students interview below:

Student 3 : Saya sulit mengucapakan kata yang baru saya dengar.


Karena kata yang terlalu panjang susah diucapkan.

be spoken.]
Students 10 : Saya sulit mengucapka kalimat yang panjang. Karena
kurangnya latihan berbicara yang saya lakukan.
[I difficult to say a long sentence. Because to lack of exercise speaking.]
Students 12 : Saya biasa salah ucap. Karena tidak terbiasa berbicara
dalam bahasa Inggris.
[I ordinary a mistake. Because I unaccustomed to speaking in English.]
Students 15 : Saya kesulitan dalam mengucapkan katanya. Karena
terlalu ribet dibaca dan diucapkan.
[I difficult in pronouncing a words. Because it is too complicated to read
and pronounce.]

e. The problems when learning to writing in English.

Based on the result of students interview, it found that the difficulties in

learning English are students difficulty in writing a new word that was

found. It can be shown from students interview below:

Students 5 : Saya sering salah dalam menulis, kadang huruf terbalik


atau ada yang hilang. Karena tidak konsentrasi dalam menulis.
[I often wrong in writing, sometimes the letters upside down or missing.
Because I dont concentration in writing.]
Students 8 : Saya sering menulis kata dan kata tersebut tidak tepat
dan kurang hurufnya. Karena saya jarang latihan menulis.
[I often writes the word and it is not appropriate and less letters. Because I
rarely writing exercises.]
Students 9 : Saya kesulitan pada saat menulis kosa kata baru. Karena
kosa kata baru tersebut sulit saya tulis.
[I difficult when write new vocabulary. Because new vocabulary difficult I
write.]
Students 10 : Saya kesulitan menulis kata baru yang baru saya lihat.
Karena kata baru tersebut tidak mungkin langsung bisa saya tulis tanpa
latihan terlebih dahulu.
[I difficult writing new words that I find. Because the new word not be
directly I wrote without exercise .]

f. The problems find in mastering English vocabulary.

Based on the result of students interview, it found that the

difficulties in learning English are students difficulties in memorizing new

vocabulary and lazy open dictionary.It can be shown from students

interview below:

Student 1 : Sulit untuk menhafal kata-kata baru yang asing saya
dengar.
[I difficult to remember the new words unfamiliar to heard. I rarely open a
dictionary and less of vocabulary.]
Students 11 : Saya tidak mampu menghapal semua kosa kata, baik
dalam buku maupun yang ada dalam kamus. Karena saya jarang buka
kamus bahasa Inggris.
[I not able memorize all vocabulary in both the book and dictionary.
Because I raryly open English dictionary .]
Students 15 : Saya tidak bisa menghafal. Karena jarang menghafal.
[I could not memorize. Because I rarely memorized.]

g. The difficulties when listening a passage which was rea by the teacher

when you learn.

Based on the result of students interview, it found that the

difficulties in learning English are difficult to understand what they

listening when a reader reading too quickly. It can be shown from students

interview below:

sebuah bacaan yang dibacakan oleh guru pada saat belajar? Mengapa?

Student 2 : Sulit mendengarkannya. Apabila guru cepat membaca
atau menjelaskan bacaan saya sulit memahami apa yang dimaksud.]
[I difficult to understand what I listening. If the teacher was too fast to read
the passage, I was difficult to understand what is mean.]
Students 9 : Apabila dibaca terlalu cepat. Saya tidak mengerti apabila
kata yang dibacakan dengan terlalu cepat menjadi tidak jelas.

[If read too quickly. Because I dont know if the words was read too
quickly becomes clear.]
Students 10 : Saya sulit mendengarkan bacaan apabila terlalu cepat
dibaca. Karena apabila saya mendengarkan sebuah bacaan terlalu cepat
saya tidak dapat memahami apa yang dimaksud dalam bacaan tersebut.
[I difficult to listen to read too quickly to read. Because I listened to
reading too fast, I can not understand what is mean in a text.]

h. The difficulties found in reading a text in English.


Based on the result of students interview, it found that the

difficulties in learning English are difficult difficulty in reading new words

recently hear. It can be shown from students interview below:

Students 11 : Saya kesulitan mengucapkan kata demi kata yang baru
saya dengar. Karena saya kurang lancar membaca sebuah teks bahasa
Inggris.

fluent a read an English text.]
Students 14 : Saya kesulitan dalam membaca kata per kata. Karena
menurut saya itu sulit.
[I difficult in reading word for word. Because according to me it is difficult.]
Students 15 : Saya kesulitan membaca kata baru. Karena jarang latihan
membaca.
[I difficulty in read new words. Because I rarely a reading practice.]

The result of the interview above suggest, that there are some problems

faced by the students of SMP PGRI Marinding in learning English. The content of

the interview were conducted to obtain information about the problems.

The first problem is lack of grammar. This problems makes the students

difficulties in setting the sentence and determine to be what they will used in

tenses. The second problem is pronunciation. They are difficult to pronounce new

words are encountered and used to read the alphabrtically. One more thing, they

are not confident in reading, speaking, and pronounce the word in English. The

third problem is vocabularies. Their difficulty in memorizing new vocabulary.

They are lazy find new vocabulary in dictionary so that they did not master the

vocabulary. The fourth problem is Listening. This problem is too difficult for

students. They are not able to understand a word of what they hear. The last

problem is writing. Their difficulty in writing new words they have just find.

Consequently they wrote the word incorrectly.

2. The data analysis obtained from the questionnaire.

In this section, the writer presents the data from questionnaire. The table

below shows the result of the questionnaire.

Based on the table above, the result of the data analysis will be presented

as follows.

Item 1

This item about grammar is one of the element to studied. Based on the

questionnaire, there are 1 student said is very difficult. Then, 3 students who

said is difficult. There are 23 student said is easy for them to studied. And

then 3 studenst said that is very easy to study.

[Most of students stated that easy about the grammar is one of the element

to study.]

This item about student nervous when reading English texts. There are 3

students said that always. Then 25 students said that sometimes. Then, 1

student said rarely and 1 student who never nervous.

B. Discussion

Based on the research findings of the obstacles faced by the students of

SMP PGRI Marinding in learning English, then the writer presents the following

discussion are as follows:

a. Grammar

Wilson (1998:20) says that English Grammar is complex, make it

difficult to remember, master and use logically. Ensuring you use the

correct grammar can be tricky, especially when you are in conversation

with someone and they are speaking at an alarmingly fast pace.

This problems makes the students difficulties in setting the sentence and

determine To be what they will be used in tenses.

Regarding with Tangki (2013) in his research about The problem in

speaking English faced by the fourth semester student of English

Department of UKI Toraja : FKIP, stated that one of the problem is

grammar.

This result, the problem makes the students difficulties in setting

the sentence and determine To be what they will be used in tenses. So can

be concluded that grammar is one of the problem in learning English.

b. Pronunciaction, Reading and Speaking

Pronunciation refers to the way in which we make the sound of

words.

Regarding Morley (1998:154) stated that knowing how to

pronounce words in English can be very difficult as it isnt always

obvious.

Reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and

getting meaning from them.

Speaking is the delivery of language through the mouth. To speak

we create sound using many parts of our body including the lungs, vocal

tract, vocal chords, tongue, teeth, and lips.

Regarding Sanggam Siahaan( 2008:95) stated that, Issues in

Linguistics (Yogyakarta: Graha Ilmu). It means that speaking is a persons

skills to produce sounds that exists at the meaning and be understood by

other people, so that able to create of good communication. It is a mental

concept that processed by someone in such a way to form a meaning when

uttered.

This result, They are difficult to pronounce new words are

encountered and used to read the word alphabetically. One more thing,

they are not confident reading, speaking, and pronounce the word in

English.

c. Writing

Writing is the process of using symbols (letters of the alphabet,

punction, and spaces) to communicate thoughts and ideas in readable

form.

Regarding Richards and Renandya (2002:303). Many students are

not interesting in learning writing. One if the chief difficulties young

people feel uneasy in writing is lack of matters. They do not easily find

anything to say about a subject. This is natural, because their experience a

general reading are limited.

This result, They difficulty in writing new words they have just

find. Consequently they wrote the word incorrectly.

d. Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the set of words within a language that are familiar

to that person.a vocabulary usually develops with age, and serves as useful

and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge.

Regarding with Tangki (2013) in his research about The problem in

speaking English faced by the fourth semester student of English

Department of UKI Toraja : FKIP, stated that one of the problem is

vocabulary.

This result, They difficulty in memorizing vocabulary. They are

lazy find new vocabulary in dictionary so that they did not master the

vocabulary. So can be concluded that vocabulary is problem in learning

English.

e. Listening

Listening is receiving language through the ears. Listening involves

identifying the sound of speech and processing them into words and

sentences.

Higgins (1995:47) says that the problem were believed to couse

by the speech rate, vocabulary and pronunciation. The problems of the

students were for the speed of delivery, new terminology and concept,

difficulty in focusing and the physical environment.

This result, the problem is too difficult for students. They are not

able to understand a word of what they hear. So can be concluded that

listening is problem in learning English.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

This chapter consist of two sections. The first section contains conclusion

which based on the research finding and discussion. The second section contains

some suggestions based on the conclusion.

1. Conclusion

Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer concludes that the

SMP PGRI Marinding find many obstacles in learning English. The obstacles

faced by the students in learning English can be concluded as follows.

a. Grammar

This problems makes the students difficulties in setting the sentence

and determine to be what they will be used in tenses.

b. Pronunciaction, Reading and Speaking

They are difficult to pronounce new words that encountered and used

to read the word alphabetically. One more thing, they are not confident in

reading, speaking, and pronuncing the words in English.

c. Writing

They difficulty in writing new words they have just find. Consequently

they wrote the word incorrectly.

d. Vocabulary

They difficulty in memorizing vocabulary. They are lazy find new

vocabulary in dictionary so that they did not master of vocabulary.

e. Listening

This problem is too difficult for students. They are not able to

understand a word that they hear.

2. Suggestion

a. For the students

The researcher suggest to have some literature books such as

dictionary, grammar and other literature. The students must find many

sources such as internet, articles to support in learning. The most

important thing students should study hard.

b. For a teacher

In this case the instructor is a teacher. How teachers give considerable

influence on the learning process. The teacher to explain any material

that is taught so that students can understand what they have learned

and continue to motivate students.
