How to Select Lightolier Recessed Downlights
Lytecasteri recessed downlights carry UL labels and markings and are in compliance with UL Standard
1571 and the National Electrical Code.
To simplify the ordering of the appropriate Frame-ln Kits for the types of fixtures discussed below, the
following Lightoller symbols are used throughout this brochure:
I Thermally Protected; O Non-Therma ly Protected; A DC. lC.
Each comp ete Lytecaster downlight consists of two numbers: Frame-ln Kit and Reflector Trim. Each
number must be ordered separate y.

NON.TYPE I.C. FIXTURE

Thermally Protected Fixtures
For all ceilings. Thermal protector in fixture safeguards against
overheating from improperly placed insulation. Insulation, if any, must
be kept 3" away from fixture sides and wiring compartments; FRAIVE.IN KIT
insulation must not be placed above fixture. FOR THERMALLY

For use in suspended ceiling installations or where thern'ral

fixtures have been specially designed to operate at safe iemperatures
when buried in insulation. The National Electrical Code and UL
Standards do not require thermal protectors for these fixtures, but
some local code jurisdictions do, to insure against overheating due
to incorrect lamping. Lighlolier fixtures are available with and wilhout

The heat problems encountered when a recessed lighling fixture is
buried in insulation are so severe that limitations in lamp type.
shielding angle and wattage must be accepted. These sacrifices in FRAME.IN KIT
liqhting perlormance may be unwarranted unless the therrnal FOB DC.IC FIXTUFE
requirements of direct burial type insulation are of paramounl importance.

WALL WASHING
As a medium for expanding or defining
space. enhancing a group of pictJres o' --
one large picture on a wall, or revealing the <?>
form of sculpture, wall washing has no
equaL
@
Recessed wall washers are designed
specifically to "wash'vertical surfaces with
even spreads of illumination from ceiling to
floor and are intended to be used in
multiples to achieve the desired effect. The
intensity and uniformity of the light can be
controlled by varying the distance of the
fixtures from the wall and their center-to-
center spac ing.
Embossed "scoop" reflectors redirect
light to the upper part of the wall. to fill in
shadows and eliminate scallops. Internal
anodized aluminum reflectors, iogether with
faceplates that conceal the light source,
assure maximum light output and minimum
brightness.
