UTILIZATION IV YR II SEMESTER- EEE

ASSIGNMENT-4
1. A train weighing 200 tonnes in accelerated uniformly from rest to speed of 45 km/h , up a
uniform gradient of 1 in 500 , in 30 seconds , the power is then cut-off and the train then
coasts down a uniform gradient of 1 in 1000 for period of 40 seconds, when the brakes
are applied the train comes uniformly to rest in 15 seconds .Calculate the maximum
power output of the driving motor assuming the efficiency of 60%.
2. A multiple unit train weights 391300 kgs. And is equipped with 12 motors giving a total
tractive effort of 171000 N. The line voltage is 600V and the average current per motor
during acceleration in 380A. series parallel control is used for starting, the full line
voltage being applied to the motors when the speed reaches 41 kmphs. The total
resistance of each motor is 0.158 . Determine the total energy supplied during the
starting period, the energy lost in the starting the resistances, the energy lost in the motor ,
resistance and useful energy applied to the train.
3. A train with locomotive having 4 motors has a total mass of 250 tonnes. Starting from
rest the train attains a speed of 40 kmph, in 20 seconds. On a 1% up gradient. The gear
ratio is 3,the gear efficiency 95%, .the wheel diameter 95 cm, train resistance (average) is
40 N per tone and rotational inertia is 10%. Find the torque developed by each of the
motor and the maximum weight of the locomotive. Given the adhesive coefficient is 0.25.
