Last week we finished the Book of Leviticus where we studied how the different
Commandments relate to each other, specifically the Torah, Statutes,
Judgements or Decrees and the Precepts. We touched on the concept of the
Garden of Eden and how the protection wall surrounding it is made of the
Statutes, with Yshua being the Gate that leads to the presence of YHVH. This
week starts the journey through Bmidbar or the Wilderness, where we are
following His directions that leads to the Promised Land. Before we start this
weeks topic, a quick recap on the Books of the Torah to see where we are and
what it represents:
1. Genesis Bresheeth (In the Beginning): This Book traces the Head
starting point and roots of the Torah, revealing YHVHs creation of
Mouth
Heaven and Earth as well as the creation of the nation called
Israel (Yisra-El Righteous people of Elohim). Genesis can be
Heart
related to the head of the Torah.
2. Exodus - Shemot (Names or Characters): This Book describes
the story of Salvation and the different characters that will play a
part in this process. This is where the Work of Messiah, the Right Hands
hand of YHVH starts His restoration process, releasing the people
of Israel with His Mighty Right Arm. This makes the Book of Exodus
the arms/hands of Torah.
3. Leviticus Vayikra (And He called): This Book is referred to as the
heart of the Torah, being right in the middle of the five Books of Feet
the Torah, as well as revealing the Heart of the Father that is
contained in the Sacrificial System (Salvation/Restoration) and the
Tabernacle (His Presence, dwelling with man/Relationship).
4. Numbers BMidbar (Wilderness/Desert): This Book captures the history of
Israels journey through the Wilderness for 40 years, on their way to the
Promised Land. This Book represents the legs/feet of the Torah.
5. Deuteronomy Devarim (Words): Deuteronomy represents the mouth of
the Torah that summarises all that has been Commanded by YHVH and all
that has happened before, a repeat if you will.

www.hasophim.com 1
This Book ends with a prophetic message and emphasises the importance of
listening (Shma Israel), repeating it five times (5 = grace). Firstly, we see the
Head and Mount connects Genesis and Deuteronomy, making it a continual
Cycle. Genesis is the Book that has to do with the mind, what was in the mind
of the Creator when He created Heaven and Earth as well as Israel. What is
their purpose and how He will renew the Heavens and the earth and the people
called Israel? Deuteronomy is all about the Voice coming from the mouth of
YHVH, spoken through His Breath. This symbolises Yshua Who is the Word
and His Spirit that is the Breath that allows Him to speak to us, and those who
shema or listen, will be part of the renewed Israel who will be restored and live
in the renewed Earth. Yshua is the Head of the Body of Israel and the
Shepherd Voice we must follow for this process to be complete in our lives.
Exodus represents the arms and hands that reveal information regarding the
Holy Arm of YHVH, that is Yshua the Messiah. The purpose of His Arm is to
bring Israel out of bondage and sin and bring them to the Mountain that
represents YHVHs Authority and His Commandments. The Mountain
experience is also about receiving His Spirit and those who receive His
Commandments and His Spirit, will become His hands that will help others to
come out of Egypt so that they can be taken to the Mountain as well.
Numbers is the Wilderness and represents the legs and feet of the Messiah.
This is related to His Walk (Halachah) that is towards the East (ancient ways)
where the Garden is planted, represented by the Promised land. This is the
Book we start this week and is all about walking in the footsteps of Yshua our
Messiah within the Desert.

Entering the Wilderness

This week we start the Book of Numbers or Bmidbar, that means in the
Desert or in the Wilderness. The Book of Leviticus dealt with the Sacrificial
System, The Priesthood and the Mountain. This Book deals with Soldiers in the
Wilderness. The Wilderness experience started in the first month, the beginning
of the second year, after they left Egypt, having completed a full Cycle including
Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, Shavuot, Trumpets, Day of
Atonement and Sukkot (Tabernacles). This is the beginning of their second
Cycle, but in a different space, namely the Wilderness, after their Mountain
experience. Here Israel will face their next obstacles as they travel towards the
Promised Land. The Desert is a place that is not designed for the fleshly soul
(nephesh) but is designed so that the spiritual soul (nashamah) so that it can
grow up and become mature and more prominent than the flesh.

This Wilderness Experience is called your life,

we need to walk in His footsteps. The first Cycle
revealed all the Truths you require to potencially
elevate your Holyness, and the Wilderness is the Testing Ground, where you
will be challenged so that these Truths can be engrained and become part of
your new nature (feeding the nashamah). These tests are designed to embed
and advance your Holiness and Relationship with the Father. This phase is like
ironing out wrinkles in your wedding gown (actions), so that you will be spotless
as His Bride, ready for that Appointed Time, that is the final stage of the
Wedding (Trumpets, Day of Atonement). This Wilderness experience answer
one of the common questions asked by believers in Messiah Yshua.
Q - Why do bad things happen to good people or people of God?
From the previous Torah Portions, we learned that it is probably because they
are outside of the will of YHVH, not being covered and protected by the safe
area called His Commandments. The other reason is that you are being tested
in the Wilderness, where your flesh will be challenged so that your spirit man
and character can be build up and strengthened, as you pass every test and
challenge this life can through you. The third reason is because the enemy
wants to destroy YHVHs people and prevent them from entering into YHVHs
rest. In this study, we will be looking at the latter two reasons and what we must
do during these tests and attacks.

The Wilderness Experience

Num 1:1 And YVHH spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the
Tabernacle of the Congregation, on the first day of the second month, in
the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt
Wilderness is the word midbar ( mem-dalet-bet-reish), that means
wilderness or mouth as in the organ of speech. Midbar is first found in
Scripture in Gen 14:6 tells the story of the battles between kings and how
Abrahams nephew, Lot, was taken captive because he was living in Sodom.
This verse reveals one of these nations as the Horites, that is the word chore
, that means cave dweller. Chore comes from the root word chur
that means hole, as in made by a serpent, and prison cell.
Spiritual Insight: This reveals the first kind of test YHVHs people will
encounter in the Wilderness; that is to be entrapped in the hole made by the
Serpent so that you will be kept captive in a prison cell. Remember we just
left Egypt (sin and bondage), we encountered the Mountain of YHVH where
we received His Statutes (protecting hedge).

www.hasophim.com 3
The Wilderness is the place where you will face the
first test, challenging that protection wall, namely
YHVHs Truths or Commandments. There are
different Serpents holes and every hole represent a
lie that will test a specific truth (Commandment), and if
you step into that hole, means that you failed that
test regarding that truth and will be imprisoned in that
area of your life by the Serpents lie. These holes are
hidden in plain sight and covered by confusion.
Q How am I set free from these prison holes of the Serpent?
Yshua taught in John 8:32 that you will know the

The danger in receiving and embracing more and To set (something) over against

(sin & bondage) or the world. This means that Egypt
still exists in the Wilderness, but it is beneath the
surface, in the ground and hidden, creating holes to trip up YHVHs people.
The problem with believing even one lie is that it
affects your spiritual eyesight, believing two lies will
affect it even more and the less you see, the
more gullible and confused you are to receive more
lies until you are completely blind. Every hole you
step in will take away of the truths YHVH revealed
on the Mountain and make you see less until you
are eventually blind for the truth. Then you are in
the Kingdom of YHVH, working for the Opposer of
YHVH, opposing YHVHs people and YHVHs Truth
without knowing it. Do not give the Serpent a foot in the door by even
allowing one lie into your life, because he wants to imprison YHVHs people
more and more through confusion and blindness, until they are fully
imprisoned by him. Take YHVHs Word for what it is and do not try to reason
in your way of interpretations so that it will accommodate your flesh. The
Wilderness will take care of your flesh, and YHVHs Truth will take care of
your spirit man, setting you free, exposing the Serpents holes so that you
will no longer stumble or fall into his grasp, as you travel through the
Wilderness.
Q What does a desert, a honey bee and words have in common?

www.hasophim.com 4
Midbar or Wilderness comes from the
root word dabar , dalet-beit-reish and has
several meanings; shepherd or leader, to set
in order, to speak or to command, word or
that which is spoken, honey bee and
wilderness.
Spiritual Insight: The Wilderness is the place where YHVHs order rules, not
defiled by man, just like the Word of YHVH creates a structure and order in
your life, without the defilement of man. The nest of a honey bee resembles a
similar structure and the bees are ordered, working together towards serving
their queen, ensuring their preservation. The result of their labour is a sweet
substance with healing properties. All of these apply to us on a spiritual level
when we receive YHVHs dabar (Words/Truth). Dabar (words) also means
plague, specifically when used to speak against, criticise or slander
someone else.
Bmidbar (in the wilderness) has the numeric value of 248; which rhymes
with the following words, sharing the same value:
veezakarah which means and you remember.
Avraham, the father of our faith
rechem which is the womb where life is incubated, also
means compassion.
Uri-El that means Elohim is my light
charem that means dedication, sacred (set-apart)
Putting all these meanings together give the following insight:
Remember the promise and covenant made to Abraham, the father of
our faith. Through this Covenant promise, you will receive the Truth, that
is the Light of Elohim. You have been born through this light (truth), and
were dedicated and set apart as a child of YHVH, because of His grace
and compassion He has for you.

Lift up the Heads

Num 1:2-4 Take a census of all the
congregation of the children of Israel, by their
families, by their fathers houses, according to
the number of names, every male
individually, 3 from twenty years old and
aboveall who are able to go to war in Israel.
You and Aaron shall number them by their
armies. 4 And with you, there shall be a man from every tribe, each one
the head of his fathers house.
This Book is known as the Book of Numbers in the English Bible because
YHVH instructed Moses to number every male over 20, who are able to go to
war. The number 20 is associated with the following words: ezbahee my
humbling, achavah brotherhood, declaration, dodo His beloved, hayah
to exist, to come to pass, chozeh seer, prophesy, jobab a desert.

www.hasophim.com 5
The phrase take a census or count the number in Hebrew is; nasah rosh
that means lift up their heads. To lift up the head has several meanings as
discussed Torah Portion 21 when we studied the Book of Exodus.
Exo 30:11-14 Then YHVH spoke to Moses, saying: 12 When you take
the census of the children of Israel for their number, then every man
shall give a ransom for himself to YHVH, when you number them, that
there may be no plague among them when you number them.
13 This is what everyone among those who are numbered shall give:

half a shekel according to the shekel of the Sanctuary. The half-

shekel shall be an offering to YHVH.14 Everyone included among those
who are numbered, from twenty years old and above, shall give an
offering to YHVH.
This is the first place where YHVH numbered His people; He commanded this
at the time of the construction of the Tabernacle. This gives another meaning to
lifting up the heads, and has to do with your contributions. What is interesting
here is that the heads are not counted, but the contributions are counted that
would be used for constructing the Tabernacle. The contributions were in the
form of half a Shekel and were for the redemption of the soul of the person and
prevented a plague coming upon those who brought it.
Num 1:2 uses the phrase number of names. Number is the word mispar
that comes from the root word saphar that means, to number, to
score with a mark, to inscribe, to recount (i.e. celebrate), declare. This word is
first used in Scripture in Gen 15:5 saying; And he brought him (Abraham)
forth abroad, and said, look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be
able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. The
numbering of Israel is the fulfilment of the Covenant promise made to Abraham,
comparing the numbering of the stars with the numbering of the sons of Israel,
who are Abrahams offspring.
Stars is the word kokav that means star as well as Prince or leader
(figuratively). The promise YHVH made to Abraham is that there will be
numerous leaders coming from His line and the males, over twenty and able
to be part of the Army of Israel, leading in battle against Israels enemies.
Number or saphar adds up to 240, and these are the words that share the
same value:
yiz-rakh-yaw that means YHVH will shine.
keedore that means attack
makak that means fade away
mor meaning a drop flowing down and myrrh
Amalek enemy of Israel that represents the flesh
What is interesting is that the value for number is associated with military
themes as well, confirming the numbering and appointing of the Soldiers in
Israels Army. We see one of the enemies that will attack us in the Wilderness
is the flesh (Amalek), but if you apply the Torah (drop flowing down yara),
this enemy will fade away and YHVH will shine in your life.

www.hasophim.com 6
Prophetic Application: Those who contribute (half-shekel contribution) are
those who are appointed and anointed by the Spirit of YHVH, empowering
them through the Gifts of His Spirit to become part of the Army of YHVH. This
changes the theme of the Priesthood becoming the Bride, in Leviticus, to the
Bride being transformed into Soldiers in the Army of YHVH. These soldiers
have an inscription (saphar) that seal and equip them, that is the
Commandments that is written on their hearts by His Spirit. The Sword of the
Spirit (piqqud- precepts) is the standard of YHVH that comes from this
inscription in the heart, and released on the enemy through the sword in the
mouth the mouth, similar to what is written about Yshua in Revelation.
Rev 19:15 And from His mouth proceeds a
sharp sword with which to strike down the
nations, and He will rule them with an iron
scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of
the wrath of Elohim, the Almighty.
This verse relates to one of the Military Names of
YHVH is Lord of Hosts, that is YHVH Tsavaot.
Tsava is the singular of tsavaot and means hosts, army, company,
assemble, warfare, soldiers, servants, to serve, battle.
This gives us a totally new understanding of what the Tabernacle or Body of
Messiah should represent today; we are to be soldiers in the Army of YHVH,
under the command of Yshua, Who is YHVH Tsevaot.

Counting by Tribe
Lev 1:17-18 Then Moses and Aaron took these
men who had been mentioned by name, 18 and
they assembled all the congregation together
on the first day of the second month; and they
recited their ancestry by families, by their
fathers houses, according to the number of
names, from twenty years old and above, each
one individually.
The numbering of every male is repeated over and over again in relation to their
Tribe and the house of their father. There is a difference between numbering a
group or mob and numbering the people in a structured way, as is the case
here. YHVH asked Moses to number the people under the banner of each
Tribe, setting them up in a structured military array, representing disciplined,
structured groups under the command of their appointed leaders. The leaders
are listed from verse 5 through 15, each leader under the banner of their Tribe.
This confirms that the numbering of the sons of Israel was to set them up to be
able to face their enemies. These enemies are under their Commander, the
Serpent, who wants to keep them from reaching the Promised Land, let alone
possess it. There is another place in Scripture, in the Berit Chadashah (NT),
where YHVH numbered His people, this is in Revelation chapter 7 with the
sealing and numbering of the 144,000, 12,000 from each tribe, setting up of the
Army of YHVH in the last days.

The Greater Exodus
The Wilderness expands from the Mountain right
through to the Promised Land, and the place on
the border of the Promised Land, represents the
End Times, the period prior to entering the
Kingdom of YHVH, that is known as the
Tribulation (Matt 24:15) and Jacobs Trouble.
Jeremiah 30:7 which says, "Alas! For that Day is great, so that none is
like it: it is even the time of Jacobs trouble, but he shall be saved out of it."
The Tribulation represents the time in the Wilderness where the Armies of
YHVH will be counted or appointed to be part of the battle against the enemy
and his army.
Rev 7:4 And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One
hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of
Israel were sealed:
Each of the twelve Tribes was sealed on their foreheads, twelve-thousand of
each tribe. Some misinterpreted this verse saying that these are the only ones
who will be saved during the time of the Tribulation, out of seven billion people,
that is not a lot.
Q Who are these 144,000 whom YHVH sealed?
We can only use Scripture to interpret Scripture, and if we relate this to the
Torah Portion, it undoubtedly refers to the leaders that will command the
Soldiers in the Army of YHVH, in the last days. The sealing of the 144,000 is
similar to the numbering of the sons of Israel, each under his Tribe (Number or
mispar means inscribing a mark). This links Numbers 1 and Rev 7 and both
are in relation to the people of YHVH being equipped for battle, the first when
they entered the Wilderness, and the second when they are about to leave the
Wilderness prior to enter the Promised Land. The 144,000 relates to the leaders
that will be appointed throughout the entire world, leading YHVHs soldiers in
every nation. These leaders will be like Moses, they will lead the people out of
Babylon, just like Moses led YHVHs people out of Egypt, making this The
Greater Exodus. The rest of Rev 7 describes a multitude standing before the
Throne of YHVH. These are the ones who were saved during the time of the
Great Tribulation, as a result of these 144,000 leaders like Moses.
Rev 7:9-10, 14 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude
which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues,
standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white
robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud
voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our Elohim who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb! 14 So he said to me, These are the ones who come out
of the Great Tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in
the blood of the Lamb.
These are the ones who were saved as a result of the Tribulation, who left
Babylon, similar to leaving Egypt, as they followed these appointed leaders with
the rest of YHVHs appointed Soldiers, all over the world.

www.hasophim.com 8
Q Have you ever thought of who will look after those newborn believers who
came to faith during the time of Tribulation, if all of YHVHs people are
raptured or taken away before this time?
YHVHs Word works in patterns and the pattern of the Exodus applies in the
End Times as well, where there will be a mixed multitude, YHVHs people who
are followers of Messiah Yshua, together with new believers coming from all
the nations, leaving the System of Babylon as commanded in Rev 18.
Rev 18:3-6 All the nations have drunk the wine of the passion of
her immorality. The kings of the earth were immoral with her, and
the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy through the
extravagance of her luxury. 4Then I heard another voice from
heaven say: Come out of her, my people so that you will not share
in her sins or contract any of her plagues. 5For her sins are piled up
to heaven, and Elohim has remembered her iniquities.
This event is recorded with the numbering of the 144,000
and is right after the Sixth Seal of Rev 6, and the Seventh
Seal of Rev 7, this starts the Seven Trumpet
Judgements. We read in Matt 24 that the sign of the Son
of Man appears at the sound of a Trumpet, AFTER the
Tribulation, where the saints are gathered (rapture).
Matt 24:29-31 Immediately after the Tribulation
of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its
light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will
be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and
then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of
Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And
He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will
gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to
the other.
The timing of the sealing of the 144,000 takes place in between the Seal and
Trumpet Judgements, near to the beginning of the Tribulation. These leaders
like Moses help the people during the Tribulation, they come to faith as they
leave the System, and will be gathered at the end of the Tribulation, as
stipulated by Matt 24:31. This is when Yshua will appear to fulfil the second
part of the Marriage Covenant, gathering and carrying His Bride over the Kidron
Valley into the House of His Father. (See the teaching of the Threshold
Covenant we discussed last year on Passover). After that the multitude will
stand before the Throne of YHVH, those who came out of the Tribulation,
together with the Soldiers and Leaders (144,000) who overcome the enemy and
took back what the Serpent stole from YHVH.

Purpose of the Wilderness Experience

Deut 8:16 Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your
fathers did not know, to humble you and to test you, to do you good in the
end.

www.hasophim.com 9
There are three things that YHVH is doing to us during our
Wilderness experience; He feeds us manna, He humbles us and
He tests us.
1. Humble is the word anah that means looking down; to
depress, to abase self, afflict(-ion, self), chasten self, deal hardly
with, defile, exercise, force, gentleness, humble (self), hurt, ravish,
submit self, weaken. Last week we looked at the word kana that
also means to humble and is associated with Kanaan or
Canaan, the Promised Land, the place of humility. The Wilderness
midbar is the place where you will humble yourself, weaken your
strong will and submit yourself to YHVH.
Q What will drive you or cause you to humble yourself?
The Wilderness or midbar is full of Serpent holes where YHVHs (your)
enemies hides, each hole represent a different area in your life that needs to be
liberated from its bondage (sin/lies), and YHVH will guide you to encounter and
face each of these areas in your life so that His Truth can set you free, as you
submit and humble yourself to these truths. Anah is first found in Scripture in
Gen 15:13 where YHVH revealed to Abram that his seed would be afflicted
(anah) for 400 years in Egypt.
Spiritual Insight: This links up with the 40 years Israel spent in the
Wilderness before entering the Promised Land. [In Hebrew, the number 40
and 400 has the same meaning and are connected]. This reveals that there
was a physical Egypt with Pharaoh in charge, this is what we know as the
sinful world that is controlled by the Serpent (Satan). Then there is an
Underground Egypt, below the surface, hidden in the Wilderness (your
life/situations), where you need to avoid the Serpent holes that will entrap
you and cause you to return to the Physical Egypt (backslide back into the
world system).
2. Test is the word nasa that means to test; to attempt something new,
prove, tempt, try. This is a homophone to the word
nasa that is used in Lev 1:2 in the phrase
nasa rosh or lift up your heads. Nasa means to
lift, accept, arise, (able to, (armour), bear(-er, up),
bring (forth), burn, carry (away), cast, contain, desire,
exalt (self), extol, forgive, furnish, give, go on, help,
high, hold up, honourable ( man), to marry, magnify,
pardon, raise (up), receive, respect, stir up, swear,
take (away, up), yield.
Spiritual Insight: the first nasa , testing in the
Wilderness, helps you to achieve the second nasa
that is the goal; to be furnished, to take up and bear armour, to forgive,
to become honourable, to be married to YHVH.

www.hasophim.com 10
3. Feed you with Manna: Feed is the word akal that means to eat,
freely, burn up, consume, devour(-er, up), dine, food.
Akal is first used in Scripture in Gen 2:16 where
YHVH told man they can freely (akal) eat (akal) from
every tree in the Garden, but may not eat (akal) from
the tree of knowledge, and if they do eat (akal) from
this tree, they will surely die. Eating is connected to a
positive meaning, namely freely or freedom as well
as a negative meaning, namely burn up and
death. This means that there are things we can
consume that brings liberty and freedom and there are things (or knowledge)
we consume that can cause spiritual death. In context of Deut 8:16, the
things they consumed in the Wilderness that led to life and freedom, was
spiritual bread called manna. This means that the Tree of Knowledge is the
opposite of the Manna or Tree of Life.
Q - What does the Manna represent in this Life (Wilderness)?
John 6:32-33 Therefore Yshua said to them, Truly, truly, I say to
you, Moses did not give you the bread out of the heaven, but My
Father gives you the true bread out of the heaven. For the bread of
Elohim is He who comes down out of the heaven and gives life to the
world.
The Manna in the Wilderness is a foreshadow of spiritual bread that points to
the true Manna, Who is Messiah Yshua, the Living Word of YHVH!
He is the Way that leads to life eternal. He is the One Who helps you to avoid
the pitfalls in this life, and if you stumble and fall, He will reach out and help you
back up. He is the One Who feeds you and nourishes you so that you can
survive this Wilderness experience. He is also the One Who allows tests so that
you can grow up to become spiritually mature. He is the Tree of Life in the
Garden and those Who eat of His fruit will receive freedom and eternal life.
Isa 5:13-17 Therefore my people have gone into exile because they have
no knowledge. And their esteemed men are starved, and their crowd
dried up with thirst. .. And man is bowed down, and mortal man
humbled, and the eyes of the proud are humbled. But YHVH of hosts is
exalted in judgment, and the set-apart l is set-apart in righteousness.
And the lambs shall feed in their pasture, and strangers shall eat in the
waste places of the fat ones.
Isaiah gives us the reason why people are humbled, that is so that they can be
fed. The context of the above verse is where people are living their lives without
regard for the Almighty. Because they have no knowledge of Him or His Word,
they got entrapped by the Serpent and found themselves in captivity (chur
serpents hole). Verse 17 reveals what can happen in this state of captivity,
those who feed on His pasture will become His lambs. Pasture is the word
dober that means pasture as well as Word. YHVH is always feeding the
lambs with the Word in desolate places (Wilderness) infiltrated by the Serpent.
This is when YHVH will feed them His Word, Who is Yshua the Messiah, the
true Manna from heaven and make them part of His flock.
