CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
April 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members

SUBMITTED BY: Mike Branson, City Forester

APPROVED BY: Chip Rerig, City Administrator

APRIL 2017 FORESTER REPORT

During the month of April, Forest, Parks and Beach staff continued to remove dead Myoporum, Acacias, and
other vegetation along the Scenic Road pathway some of which was the result of some illegal pruning near
Eighth Avenue. Staff and contractors also continued with the Citys annual weed mowing program along some
of the street right-of ways and at the Forest Theater. The late rains have extended the active growing season
for many of the annual grasses growing along our public right-of-ways and have also supported a significant
flush of growth from the trees and shrubs around the community.

The on-call tree service contractors continued to work on their work orders for dead tree and stump removals.
Twenty-one public trees were removed this month and staff planted two new trees.

In the North Dunes habitat restoration area, the contract biologist, Joey Canepa, continued planting and
watering new native dune plants and doing population counts of the endangered Tidestroms lupine. She also
had the assistance of a five-person volunteer crew for three full days removing more iceplant and annual
weeds.

In late April the City placed the first wood fire device on Carmel Beach for the 2017 season near Eighth
Avenue. Staff began the weekday cleaning and monitoring program as well.

Beautification Funds

To date, funds from the Beautification Fund are being used for installation of new rod and cable fencing along
the Scenic Pathway, short-term repairs to the Scenic Pathway landscape barriers, revitalization of the Ocean
Avenue medians landscaping, contracts for removal of dead trees, stump grinding, supplemental tree watering,
and landscape design contracts with Scott Hall for the Scenic Rd. pathway and Joni Janeckis work at San
Antonio and Fourth.
