What is rat Tail joint- Used to joint coductors in
outlet boxes or when Fixtures leads are connected
through conductors.
Tap - is used when one wire must be tapped into another wire somewhere other than its end.

Splices and joints - are two names for essentially the same thing, that is, methods of connecting
two pieces of wire so as to carry either a signal or an electrical current.

Western Union Splice

The Western Union splice- is the most common type of wire splice used extensively in inside and
outside wiring. This type of connection is used to splice small, solid conductors together.

Two Types of western Union Splice.

1. Western Union short tie splice
2. Western Union Long Tie splice

note: The difference between the two is that western union long tie has more number of twist
turns than western union short tie beforee wrapping.
Western Union short tie Splice
Procedure:
1.Prepare two wires about 4 in. lenght #14 awg wire.
2.Unskinned about 3 in. at the ends
3.Placed the two wires in crossed position about 1 in. from the insulation.
4. Make two to three twist turns and then wrapped each side of the longest twist and the free ends
cut off and squeeze down closed to the straight position of the wire so that they will not extend
over the surface of the short turns and permit the sharp to cut through the tape with the splice to
be wrapped
Western Union Long Tie splice
Procedure:
1.Prepare 2 pcs solid wire #14 about 5 in. long
2.Unskinned the two wires for about 4 1/2 in from the ends.
3.Placed the two wires to form an X about at a point midway between the insulation and the end
base of the wire.
4. Make five to six long twist on each side and then wrapped.

Britannia Splice- is used in interior wiring where solid wires # 6 AWG or Larger sizes are to be
joined
and where large wire connectors and pliers are not at hand.
Procedure:
1. Prepare two pcs of awg solid wires # 6 or larger about four inches in lenght.
2.About 1/2 in. of the extreme end of each beat to almost at right angle to the straight portion of
the conductor.
3. a wrapping wire made of # 18 cooper bare wire is cut about 6 feet in lenght and prepare by
cleaning and bending in half.
4.The large conductor are then laid together, one bent end pointing upward and the other
downward.
5. the center of the wrapping wire is then brought to the center of the conductor, one half of
which wrapped in one direction and the remaining half in the other as far as the best portion
5. the free ends are then forced to the grooves from one ends to the other end of the large single
conductors.
6.The best ends are then cut off closed to the joint.
Scarfed Splice -It is only used to a large
solid wire where there is an objection to the bulkiness of the western union or Britannia splice.

Procedure:
1.prepare 2pcs about 4 inches # 6 awg solid wire.
2.Unskinned for about 3 in from the ends.
3.Filed the bared wire to a wedge shape starting about 1/2 inch from the insulations.
4.a piece of # 18 bare cooper wireis cut to about 5 ft. in lenght and prepare by bending and
cleaning in half.
5.The two files sides of the conductor are the laid together and theen wrapping wire wound
around them as similarly done in Britannia splice.
6. the wrapping is completed by winding aboutt six and seven turns of the free ends around of
the unfilled portion of the conductor.
Multiple cable wrapped splice - is used more extensively on small sstrands wire and cables
beacause the strands are more pliable and maybe wound together without much defficulty .

Procedure:
1. Prepare two stranded conductors # 14 awg wire for about 7 inches in lenght.
2.Unskinned for about 6 inches from ends
3.The strands are cleaned and spread about apart.
4. The strands are cut about 3 inches from the insulation to the right angle with the conductor.
4. the strands of both conductors are then laced together, one group of the strands wounds in the
opposite direction.
5. all strands of each group are wrapped simultanously and parallel to one another.
Plain Tap or tee joint - is used to a great extent joining
Tap or other conductor to a through conductor as a branch or main circuit.
Procedure:
1. Prepare a solid wire #14 as our main wire of about 3 inches long.
2. Unskinned the main wire of about 1 inch from both ends.
3. Prepare a solid wire#14 awg as our Tap wire of
about 3 inches long
4. Unskinned the Tap wire of about 2 inches from one end.
5.The wire is cross intersecring for about 1/4 inches from the insulation of the tap wire and main
wire.
6. ahook or sharp bend is then made in the tap wire at about five to six turns wound around the
main wire.
7. the joint is then soldered and tape.
Knotted or loop Tap joint -is a very strong joint
and will not untwist even enough strain is put on it.
It is ocationally used in practice particularly for temporary lighting system where time is not
taken to solder joints.

Procedure:
1.Prepare a solid wire# 14 awg about 4 inches longas our main wire.
2.unskinned the main wire about 1 inch from both ends.
3.Prepare a solid wire # 14 awg about 4 inches long as our Tap wire.
4. unskinned the tap wire for about 3 inches from one end.
5.Place over the insulation of the tap and main wire
6.the tap wire is bent and hooked over the main wire and brought forward and bent over itself.
7. the remaining portion is wound into four or five short turns around the main wire.
wrapped tap or tee joint
-is used in large
solid conductors where is defficult to wrap
heavy tap wire around the main wire.

Procedure:
1. Prepare # 6 solid wire about 6 inches long
as our main wire
2.unskinned for about 4 inches leaving 1inch.
of insulation in both ends of the main wire.
3.Prepare # 6 solid wire about 5 inches long as our
Tap wire.
4. Unskinned the wire for about 4 inches long from from one end.
5.The tap wire is bent into L- shape about 1/2 inch
from the insulation so that it will rest along the main wire .
6. A wrapping wire # 18 bare conductor terminating beyond the bent of the tap wire up to the
installation
of the main conductor.
ordinary cable tap or tee joint
- is used where large
stranded wire or cables are tap to a through conductor.

Procedure:
1. Prepare # 6 stranded wire for about 6 inches long as our main wire.
2. unskinned the main wire for about 3 inches and clean leaving about 1.5 inch. with insulation
on both ends.
3.prepare # 6 stranded wire about 8 inches long as our tap wire, unskinned and clean one end of
the wire for about 6 inches and the strands are separated or fan each strand of the tap into shape.
4.The main cable is place on a V - shape space and forced down to within 1 inch from the
insulation of the tap conductor.
5. one group of tap wire is then wound around the main condductor each strand should be place
parallel to the other and all wrapped at the same time and in one direction.
6. the other group is wound in semilar manner but in opposiite direction.
Split cable Tap or tee Joint
-is used where stranded cables are tapped to a through conductor. This tapped is stronger than
ordinary cable tap.

Procedure:
1.Prepare stranded wire #14 about 7 inches long as our main wire.
2. unskinned the wire for about 5 inches and clean leaving 1 inch on both ends of the wire with
insulation.
3.prepare a wire # 14 about 7 inches as our tap wire and unskinned for about 6 inches from one
end andd cleaned.
4.the strands of the main wire is devided in half by forcing the srew driver through the center of
the bared portion of the main wire.
5.The strands of the tap wire is cleaned and fanning out the strands so that they can be pusshed
around the space in the main wire.
6. a space about 1 1/2 inch should be left between the main wire and the insulation of the tap
wire.
7. One group is wound around the main wire in one direction and the second group is wound in
the other direction.
Through Fixture joint
-is uesd where fixtures are connected to branch wires at an intermediate point.

Procedure:
1.Prepare solid wire # 14 awg at about 5 inches long.
2. unskinned the other end of the wire for about 4 inches long.
3.Prepare another wire for about 3 inches unskinned the other end for about 2 inches
4.At a point 1/4 away from the insulation of the longer wire, 3 or 4 long twist are made
similar to the rat tail joint.
5. the long bared portion of the long wire is bent over parallel with the free ends.
6. Both free ends are then place alongside aech other wrapped together around the straight
bared portion.
