ASSIGNMENT#1

Q.1 Describe a project whose life cycle would be a straight line from start to
finish.
An example might be going through the training process to get a pilots certificate.
If the student follows a prescribed syllabus, there is very little planning required.
If the students schedule allows, he or she will spend about the same number of
hours per week studying and flying from the beginning until they take their check
ride.
Q.2 Explain Projects proceed smoothly until 90 percent complete, and then
remain at 90 percent forever.
Answer: Lifecycles tend to resist termination. In many cases, the work needed to
closeout a project can be tedious and unrewarding particularly those picky issues
that have been allowed to let slide.
Moreover, as people begin leaving the projects, the remaining team members may
become more interested in landing the next assignment than in completing the last
steps of the current project. An equally damaging possibility is that the remaining
people dont know what their next job is so they drag out this one.
Q4. Use a weighted score model to choose between three methods (A,B,C) of
financing the acquisition of a major competitor . The relative weights for each
criterion are shown in the following table as are the scores for each location
on each criterion. A score of 1 represents unfavorable, 2 satisfactory and 3
favorable.
Method
Category weight A B C
Consulting cost 20 1 2 3
Acquisition 20 2 3 1

Disruption 10 2 1 3
Cultural 10 3 3 2

a. What would your recommendation be if the weight for the
implementation risks went down to 10 and the weight of the cultural
differences went up to 25.
b. The vice president of finance has looked at your original scoring model
and feels that tax considerations should be included in the model with a
weight of 15. In addition, the VP has scored the methods on tax
considerations as follows: method A received a score 3, method B
received 2, and method C received 1. How would this additional
information affect your recommendation?
