Super critical/ Ultra critical pulverized fuel plants - the effective clean coal technology for new coal- fired plants.
Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion plants - which an increasing number of companies and utilities are adopting to burn
coal and other solid fuels; Plus Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle plant;
.Examples of these technologies will be provided for existing and planned power plants in the Asia/ Pacific Regions.
This training course will illustrate how the power utility and coal mining industries are leveraging on new technology in clean
coal power generation. Technical and non-technical professionals who require an introduction to the current and future coal
combustion technologies will find this course useful for their projects and future collaborations. This course is broad based to
give you an insight into the exciting new developments that are currently shaping the coal and power generation industries
and markets.

Course Director: Dr. Debdas Banerjee B.Sc. (Hons.) M.Sc. (Analytical Chemistry) & Ph.D. IIT. Bombay
(Ph.D. IIT Bombay) from Large thermal power sector (NTPC LTD) with 30 years of experience in Centre for Power
Efficiency & Environmental Protection and R&D NTPC.
Area of Experience:
1. Boiler performance assessment & analysis through off-line & online monitoring of process parameters like fuel
flow, flue gas temperatures and flue gas compositions .
2. Performance assessment of Air Heater, Mill & ESP & their computations.
3. Combustion optimization in power plant
4. Optimization of Coal blending in Power station
5. Assessment of combustion reactivity of Non-coking coal
6. Organizing Seminar, workshop, Training program
7. Presently Guest Faculty for Training programs of Power Management Institute of NTPC & External Institutes
(NPTI, IIT Dhanbad etc.)
Covered session on coal & combustion area in international training program at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad.
FOREIGHN TRANING & Other credits:
1. Attended two weeks training at TA Instrument USA - on applications of THERMAL ANALYSER ( DSC, DTA,
TGA).
2. Attended one weak training program on On Line Fuel Balancing System organized by Doosan in South Korea.
3. Around 25 papers published & presented
Motivation:
Coal is the prime feed for approximately unlimited industrial and thermal power sector worldwide. With
the advent of import to India and the reducing qualities of coal from current mining areas, it has become
difficult to obtain the correct qualities of coal to meet the specifications for boilers designed in the years
gone by. This leads to reduced efficiency and increased emissions norms.
This course seeks to outline the issues now being faced by coal-fired boiler users and to present an
outline of the coal qualities now available on the market with comments on how best to use them.
Objectives:
The purpose of this workshop is to outline the principles of combustion and to present coal qualities and
performance for users of coal in a range of boiler sizes, this to ensure improved efficiencies and
reducing harmful emission from thermal power plants.

How can we reach the objectives?
Unitlevel bench marking
Componentlevel bench marking
Maintainability is defined as the probability of performing a successful repair action within a given time. In other words,
maintainability measures the ease and speed with which a system can be restored to operational status after a failure occurs.
Availability factor of a process plant is the amount of time that it is able to produce electricity over a certain period, divided by
the amount of the time in the period. Occasions where only partial capacity is available may or may not be deducted.
Reliability (1) The duration or probability of failure-free performance under stated conditions. (2) The probability that an item
can perform its intended function for a specified interval under stated conditions.
Game Plan
To simply find ways that either outage frequency, outage duration, or both, can be reduced and kept at a level consistent with
minimum generation costs and load management objectives.
Power Plants Oil & Gas Petrochemical Fertilizer Pulp & Paper Chemicals Iron & Steel etc.
