teaching novel
Irvin Yalom, the emeritus professor of psychology at Stanford, aims to present group therapy more sympathetically than the mainstream
image of the technique as a joke.

rvin Yalom has experienced every
I kind of success imaginable within
his field of expertise. The now-
emeritus professor of psychiatry at
Stanford was a leader in the devel-
opment of group psychotherapy and
has written related textbooks that are
now considered classics.
So it wouldnt be surprising if he
might have a few qualms about his
first forays into fiction. This may
even be why he prefers they be con-
sidered part of a new genre he calls
the teaching novel.
The idea of a novel being written
to teach the reader something is as
old as the novel itself: Harriet
Beecher Stowe had the same goal in
mind 150 years ago when writing
Uncle Toms Cabin. But it proba-
bly is true that someone mostly
seeking entertainment will not be
satisfied by a novel like Yaloms
The Shopenhauer Cure. The novel
is more likely to appeal to someone
who already has an interest in psy-
chiatry and group therapy and is cu-
rious about issues pertinent to the
field in this case, whether philos-
ophy can or should be used as a sub-
stitute for talk therapy.
The Schopenhauer Cure is the tions of their own world views and
story of an aging psychiatrist, Julius
Hertzfeld, who learns he is suffering
from terminal cancer. In contemplat-
ing his own death, Hertzfeld thinks
about the contributions he made as a
therapist over the years and worries
about the patients he couldnt help.
In the past, he consoled himself with
the thought that such patients might
have experienced a delayed response
to his treatment. No longer con-
vinced, he decides to contact one of
his most intractable patients a
sex-addict named Philip.
It turns out that Philip has, by his
own estimation, been cured but
by Don Kazak
not as a result of any therapy ses-
sions. Philip believes he has cured
himself through the study of philos-
ophy and particularly the works of
the 19th century philosopher Arthur
Schopenhauer. Julius is skeptical of
Philips so-called breakthrough. He
finds his former patient to be as out
of touch with humanity as before.
And Julius is even less pleased to
discover that Philip has plans to be-
come a therapist himself, using phi-
losophy rather than more tradi-
tional therapy techniques as the
basis for treatment.
What ensues is a fairly fascinating
battle of wills between two men who
at some level recognize the limita-
which will lead to another character
against their own better judgment
are compelled to put themselves
in proximity to their opposites as a
means of confronting aspects of
their own biases. This plays out, in
practical terms, with Julius agreeing
to serve as a supervising therapist for
Philip as he works for a license. For
his part, Philip has to attend Julius
group therapy class for a year and
work on his own interpersonal skills.
The conflict is bumped another
notch when it turns out that one of
the women in Julius therapy group
was sexually traumatized by Philip
as a young college student.

Probably the most interesting as-
pect of this novel is its portrayal of
the dynamics of group therapy.
Yalom has said that pop culture goes
out of its way to poke fun at therapy
groups and wrote this book partly to
more accurately and sympathetically
depict how members of such groups
work together.
At times the earnestness that goes
along with this type of soul-search-
ing can be hard to bear. There is
something about therapy-speak, with
its constant questioning of motives
and calling out of behaviors and
emotions that can be off-putting at
first. Im aware, one character will
note, of ongoing tension here,
to ask, Im wondering, Philip, do
you feel listened to? Do you feel
your contributions get the considera-
tion they merit? which in turn leads
Julius to respond in a manner that
sounds painfully clichd: What I
hear you saying is that youre giving
me good stuff which I dismiss out
of hand and that leaves you feel-
ing unvalued. Right?
However, the further along one
gets in Yaloms novel, the more the
therapy-speak fades into the back-
ground the way dialects can, allow-
ing the ideas and issues the charac-

ters are facing to rise to the forefront.
Yalom does a remarkable job of in-
terweaving his characters personali-
ties to show how they feed off one
another, together pushing the group
to the inevitable catharsis.
The only real disappointment is
the novels handling of Schopen-
hauer. Because of its title, I had
hoped to get more insight into the
philosopher and his writings. For the
most part, Schopenhauer is used as a
foil for Philip. We are shown how
the same isolated and unhappy youth
shared by the character and the
philosopher have led them both to
find solace in a world view that glo-
rifies self-reliance, the individual,

and the life of the mind leaving
the two scornful and suspicious of
relationships, especially those with
women.
The idea also seems to be to have
Philip serve as a stand-in for the
philosophical counseling movement.
Characters in the novel point out that
Philip has been filtering Schopen-
hauers writing to reinforce his own
views rather than seeking to under-
stand the work in all of its complex-
ity. The same critique has been
lodged against the recent nonfiction
bestseller, Plato Not Prozac, writ-
ten by Lou Marinoff, who is at the
forefront of the philosophical coun-
seling movement. It is hard not to in-
terpret Yaloms novel as a direct re-
sponse to Marinoff and others who

have pitched philosophy-lite as a
substitute for traditional talk thera-
py.
Unfortunately, while Yalom him-
self seems to understand the extent
of Schopenhauers contribution to
Western philosophy, this doesnt ful-
ly come through in the novel. The
interspersed chapters about
Schopenhauers life show him as a
troubled genius whose philosophy
while brilliant in some respects
was compromised by his unwill-
ingness or inability to relate to other
people. It would have been nice to
have more time devoted to showing
how and Schopenhauer earned his
place in the canons of philosophy.
Without understanding what it is
about Schopenhauers writing that
has stood the test of time, it is hard
to decide whether to view his choice
to live in extreme isolation as a nec-
essary means of accomplishing his
aims as philosopher, or as a charac-
ter flaw that may have limited the
potential scope of his genius. Yalom
makes the point that Schopenhauer
himself seems satisfied at having fa-
thered books instead of children. But
the lesson Yalom seems more eager
to impart is that great philosopher or
not, living like Schopenhauer is no
way to live.

The End: Hamburg 1943
by Hans Erich Nossack is a slim
book which is a first-person ac-
count of the horrors of war. The
late author, a novelist, watched
Allied bombers reduce Hamburg
to rubble, writing this three
months later.
The Intimate World of
Abraham Lincoln by C.A.
Tripp is an examination of a sub-
ject sure to make some people un-
easy. While married and a father,
Lincoln also had close relation-
ships with men throughout his
life. Tripp, who died in 2003
shortly after completing this man-
uscript, makes a convincing case
that Lincoln was bisexual.
The Lost German Slave
Girl by John Bailey is an ac-
count of an extraordinary story
from 1843 New Orleans about
how a young German orphan was
enslaved and told she was black.
When a woman who knew the
girls mother saw her years later
and noted the striking resem-
blance, that led to Sally Millers
efforts to win her freedom, includ-
ing a sensational trial which
rocked New Orleans.
Pol Pot: Anatomy of a Night-
mare by Philip Short is an his-
torical horror story of the first
magnitude. The Kymer Rouge
leader and his regime ruled Cam-
bodia in 1975-79, killing 1.5 mil-
lion of the countrys 7 million
people.
The Orientalist: Solving the
Mystery of a Strange and Dan-
gerous Life by Tom Reiss is the
biography of Lev Nussimbaum, a
Russian Jew who later became a
Muslim, wrote a best-selling nov-
el, and was a celebrity in Nazi
Germany. The author recounts
Nussimbaums life and tries to
separate myth from fact.
The Reluctant Spiritualist:
The Life of Maggie Fox by
Nancy Rubin Stuart is a biogra-
phy of a woman who co-founded
the spiritualist movement in
America in 1848. Fox and her sis-
ter claimed they heard messages
from the spirit world and gained a
wide following. Forty years later,
Fox revealed it had all been a
hoax.
The Soviet Century by
Moshe Lewin is a highly detailed
account, using Soviet archives, to
recount that countrys history
from the revolution of 1917
through its breakup. The now-
available archives enabled Lewin
to reveal the inner workings of the
Soviet Union.
