Objectives
At the end of the experiment, the student should be able to:
1. demonstrate the process of filtration as a way of separating mixtures.
2. give the products derived from filtration.

Equipment
1 Filtration setup
Stand setup

Materials
Plastic cup

Chemicals

1 teaspoon sand
Half full water in plastic cup

Safety Precautionary Measures:

Follow procedures carefully and with utmost attention.

Procedure

1. Prepare the Filtration setup as shown in Figure 1.


2. Place tissue paper shaped like a filter cone inside the funnel.
3. Pour a half-full of water into a plastic cup.
4. Place one tablespoon of sand into the plastic cup.
5. Pour the sand-water mixture into the funnel.
3. Observe what happens.
4. Compare the color of the mixture in the plastic cup on the left with the color of the
resulting solution in the other cup.
