Time allowed: 30 Minutes Max Marks: 15

Topic: Number System

Instructions:

There are 6 questions in this paper.

And you have to solve all.
5 marks will be awarded for the home work and added in final marks

Solve all the given sums:

1) State the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. (1M)
2) The given steps represent the procedure for finding the HCF of the numbers, 360
and 252, by using Euclids division algorithm.
360 = 252 1 + a
252 = a 2 + b
a = b 3 + 0. What are the respective values of a and b? (2M)
3) If a = 23 3, b = 2 3 5, c = 3n 5 and LCM (a, b, c) = 23 32 5, then find the
value of n. (2M)
4) Show that a positive odd integer is of the form 6m + 1 or 6m + 3 or 6m + 5, where
q is some integer. (3M)
5) Find the HCF of 1488 and 37888 using Euclids Division Algorithm. (3M)
6) Prove that 4 is an irrational number. (4M)

ANSWER KEY
1) Every composite number can be expressed as the product of two or more prime
numbers in a unique way except for their order.
2) a = 360 252 = 108
b = 252 216 = 36
3) According to the given information, 3n = 32 n = 2 ( a, b and c are all having 3
in their prime factorization)
4) Let a be any positive odd integer.
a = 6q + r; 0 r < 6
a = 6q (or) 6q + 1 (or) 6q + 2 (or) 6q + 3 (or) 6q + 4 (or) 6q + 5
Weekly Test (Grade X)
But 6q , 6q + 2 and 6q + 4 are even numbers since they are multiples of 2.
Any positive odd integer is in the form of 6q + 1 or 6q + 3 or 6q + 5.
Hence shown.
5) 37888 = 1488 25 + 688
1488 = 688 2 + 112
688 = 112 6 + 16
112 = 16 7 + 0
HCF of 1488 and 37888 is 16.
6) Let 4 be a rational number.
4

(i)

Let be a rational number.

p= q
p 2 = 5 q2
5 divides p2 and so 5 divides p. ( Theorem)
p = 5m
p2 = 25 m2
5 q2 = 25 m2
q2 = 5 m2
5 divides q2 and so 5 divides q. ( Theorem)
5 is a common factor of p and q, which is a contradiction to our assumption.
Hence is not a rational number and so it is an irrational number.
Now in (i), LHS is an irrational where as the RHS is a rational which is a
contradiction.
Hence 4 is not a rational number but an irrational number.
