STRENGTHENING OF KARNATAKA GRID AT 220 KV AND SUB-

TRANSMISSION LEVEL: A STATUS PAPER

After commissioning of Kolar and associated transmission system, the bottlenecks in

Karnataka system have been largely attended to. However, pockets in the grid still face
problems of overloading and Voltage The details are as follows:-

1. 220 kV Ring-main system around Bangalore:-

The first phase of 400 kV Ring Main around Bangalore city is in place. After the
commissioning of 400 kV D/C Nelamangala-Somanahalli line, Bangalore city
will have a robust system at the supergrid level. With the fast rate of expansion of
Bangalore, demand is slated to increase substantiallyfrom the present level of
1200 MW. This entails that the grid at 220 kV and below needs to be geared up
for delivering this power. The present 220 kV ring around Bangalore is as
follows:-

The loads are drawn from these points into the 220 kV system. The augmentation
works that need to be done are:-
Upgradation of 66 kV conductors to Drake
Upgrading the major 66 kV Ring main stations around Bangalore to 220
kV Compact GIS based substations level and usage of Cable to avoid
right-of way problems and space constraints. KPTCL plans to upgrade
the A station near SRLDC to 220 kV level using underground cable
connected to NRS. Grid map of Bangalore is enclosed.
Underground cabling for distribution network with pole based
transformers.

Agricultural loads to overcome low voltage problems and overloading of
sub-transmission
2. 220 kV Ring-main system around Mysore:-

Presently, Mysore city loads are met from 2 lines from Shimoga and one line from
Bangalore. The Somanahalli-T.K.Halli-Mysore line is fully loaded and supplies
power to water pumping station at TK Halli. Also T.K.Halli has agricultural loads
also. This area is prone to low voltages. The second circuit was under construction
by KPTCL but progress is slow. Meanwhile the other 2 lines from Shimoga are
also loaded. With the commissioning of 400 kV Mysore station an opportunity for
a 220 kV ring main exists. KPTCL also plans for a new 220 kV station at
Vajmangala near Mysore.

3. Strengthening/Augmentation requirement in other areas

220 kV and below voltages at Mahalingapura area are low. The loads are
predominantly agricultural. A new Substation north of Mahalingapura to
be fed from Belgaum can be thought of or alternatively another line from
Narendra to M.L.Pura to evacuate Kaiga can also be a solution.
Under the Upper Krishna Project the irrigation around Lingasugur ie
Raichur, Bagalkot Koppal district would be improved. The demand would
go up as a result of this. Hence, Sub-transmission level schemes can be a
requirement in this area.
Strengthening of 220 kV network around Guttur:- Guttur and downstream
stations form the crucial evacuation path for Raichur and Kaiga power.
Guttur 220 kV is also linked to Shimoga and Sharavathy on 220 kv
network. However in case of loss of 400 kV line during disturbances, the
only 220 kV line towards Raichur via Ittagi trips. This causes separation of
Karnataka into 2 systems. Raichur, Nagjhari with North Karnataka loads
and Sharavathy with S.Karnataka loads. The connection between these
systems needs to be reinforced.
220 kV stations are located at all districts, other than Madikeri and
Chikmaglur districts. 220 kV SS is planned at Kadur for Chikmaglur and
Kushalnagara for Madikeri. Kushalnagara can be connected to
Mysore(POWERGRID) station by 220 kV D/C line. The Kadur SS is
planned by LILO of existing Shimoga-Nelamangala line 3rd circuit.
