Concept 1: Day and Night
Concept Building

The Earth is a sphere, or ball.

It spins round and round as it travels around the Sun.
One side of the Earth faces the Sun, while the other
side faces away from the Sun.
The side facing the Sun has DAY, and the side facing
away has NIGHT.
The Earth takes 24 hours to complete one full spin
which is one full DAY.
The Sun does not move. It seems to move across the
sky starting in the east in the morning, moving toward
the south at noon, and then toward the west as the day
ends. It is the
Earth turning that makes it seem as though the Sun is
moving.
Poem:

60 minutes in an hour
12 hours in a DAY
12 hours in a NIGHT
24 hours in a Full Day
The Earth rotates on its axis
24 hours is a Day
The part facing the Sun
We have some fun
The part thats away
We are done for the day

Concept 4: Water cycle
Water on the Earth keeps going around and
around and around and this is called the
"Water Cycle"

This cycle is made up of a few main parts:

o evaporation (and transpiration)
o condensation
o precipitation
o collection
The sun turns water on the Earth into a vapor. Water
comes from the ocean, lakes, rivers and streams. It also
comes from plants, trees and the ground. This is called
evaporation or transpiration.
As the vapor rises, it gets cold. When it gets cold, it
gathers in clouds. This is called condensation.
When the clouds get too heavy to hold the water any
longer, they drop it back to Earth in the form of rain, sleet,
snow or hail. Some of the water runs into lakes, streams,
rivers and oceans.
Ground water is water that soaks into the ground.
Eventually some of it travels to the ocean, picking up salt
and other minerals on its way. This is why the ocean is
salty.
Water trapped in glaciers and ice caps can be millions of
years old. It is the purest water on Earth.
Evaporation
Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in rivers or
lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapor or steam. The
water vapor or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and
goes into the air.

Transpiration
Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water out
of their leaves. Transpiration gives evaporation a bit of a
hand in getting the water vapor back up into the air.
Do plants sweat?
Well, sort of....
People perspire (sweat) and plants transpire!

Condensation
Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back into
liquid, forming clouds. This is called condensation.

Pour cold water in a glass and you will see that water forms outside the
glass. Where did this water come from? That water didn't somehow leak through
the glass! It actually came from the air. Water vapor present in the air turns
back into liquid when it touches the cold glass.

Precipitation
Precipitation occurs when so much water
has condensed that the air cannot hold it
anymore.
The clouds get heavy and water falls back to
the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or
snow.

Collection:
When water falls back to
earth, it may fall back in the
oceans, lakes or rivers or it
may end up on land.
When it ends up on land, it
will both soak into the earth
and become part of the
ground water that plants
and animals use to drink or it
may run over the soil and collect in the oceans, lakes or
rivers where the cycle starts again.

Guess the water body

Ponds: A pond is a body of standing water, either natural or
artificial, that is usually smaller than a lake
Stream: a small, narrow river
Oceans: large expanse of salt water that covers three-
quarters of the earth's surface

Sea: Seas are smaller than oceans and are usually located
where the land and ocean meet
Lake: a large area of water surrounded by land
River: a large natural flow of water that crosses an area of
land and goes into an ocean or a lake

One day, Avishi decided to go to the beach to play. When she
reached the beach, she stood with her feet in the water. And
then, something weird happened. She could hear some
noises. She looked down and say the water droplets talking
to each other!

There was a family of water droplets at her feet. The

smallest of the water droplet was called Anant, and he had a
brother named Arhant. And their parents were the bigger
water drops.

The water droplets were talking to each other it was a hot

day so they had come to the ocean to cool themselves.
Suddenly, Avishi heard a soft scream. The water droplets
were going towards the sky. They were shocked and did not
know what was happening.
Concept 5: Photo synthesis

Photosynthesis = photo + synthesis

photo, which means light, and synthesis which
means putting together. So in simple terms,
plants use light to put things together.
Concept Building

In the leaves of a plant is a substance called

chlorophyll. Chlorophyll makes leaves green.
It also traps the energy from the sun so the
plant can use it.
When plants take carbon dioxide from the
air, they release oxygen. Animals and Human
Beings need oxygen to breathe. We release
carbon dioxide, which the plants use.
Plants also need minerals from the soil to
grow. Nitrogen helps them grow and make
leaves. Phosphorus helps grow strong roots.
Potassium helps the plant make fruit and it
keeps them healthy.
Plants need large amounts of nitrogen,
phosphorus and potassium. The soil doesnt
always have enough of these nutrients.
Gardeners use fertilizer to give plants more
nutrients. Fertilizers are sort of like vitamins
for plants. Some fertilizers are made from
chemicals. Others are made from natural
things like cow manure.
