The media product I am choosing is Disneys Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The purpose of this product is to entertain the Si-fi/ fanbase of star wars. The audience consists
of a primary audience of children between the ages of 8-12 with a secondary being the fanbase
usually consisting of mostly 20-35 year olds which are most likely fans of the original trilogy/
prequels as the film features multiple callbacks to previous films however in a way that will
welcome/ not alienate new audiences.
The codes of conventions of star wars the force awakens come under the codes and
conventions of actions adventure. The films plot complied very well with the base codes and
conventions of the action adventure genre. it featured a protagonist who is the normal, everyday
average joe who is then dragged on an adventure that will change the outcome of their and
many other lives. Features occasional comic relief strange/exotic locations and follows the base
dynamic of the genre which is equilibrium into disruption into recognition of disruption into
repairing/ solving of disruption into return to equilibrium.
The style of this film calls back to the original trilogy's new take on the Si-Fi franchise that
created the sub genre of space western. It features multiple codes and conventions linked with
western. For example the way out protagonists enter the cantina and the whole room is silenced
and frozen.
This product's conventions are effectively exhibited via the mise en scene. Throughout the
movie a lot of environments reflected the general vibe as well as reflected the protagonists
struggle and how said struggle changed throughout the film. For example at the start of the film
Rey is down and is struggling to provide for basic needs for herself like food and water. The
planet she's on (jakku) perfectly reflects this as it is a sand planet with vast deserts. With
deserts having heavy connotations of empty hopeless and general negative feeling it really does
show that these two features coincide to build the tone of the movie. As the film progresses we
see the transformation in the setting to character ratio. We see later in the film we see Rey
arrive on the planet Takodana which is a very green and colourful planet which perfectly reflects
her current mood however as the movie progresses we see an battle wage on the planet and
we see more of the darker areas like the deep woodland appear and more low key lighting in
order to show the stress and worry exhibited by our protagonist. Star wars the force awakens
effectively conveys the conventions of Si-fi via the use of many aspects that are considered
standard viewing in the si-fi as a whole genre. For example common aspects seen in si-fi are
lasers, vehicles that can defy gravity, minimalist environments and advanced technology like
see through displays.
The process of making this product is first a base concept is thought up by the creative team
and from there they work with the writer to create advanced concepts and basic concept art.
From there once the base idea is agreed upon with higher ups (in some cases investors as well)
a script is wrote and from ther refined and refined until a workable script is produced and given
to director. From there the director will then build his vision working on different aspects of the
scripts then start to acquire assets like actors and budgeting info. From there pre production
starts where aspects like risk assessment, location scouting, tech scouting, storyboarding etc.
from there the movie will be set into production where all the pre production and planning kicks
into effect and shot by shot the movie is set into production however the pre production doesn't
always mean the final product will be like that. Technical issues, field re writes and workarounds
for real world issues like location, money etc. all contribute to the final product. After shooting
the footage is then passed onto the post production stage where aspects like CGI and basic
shot edits like colour grading is applied.
