Design of Splice Joint

Cover plate for top flange

Net area of flange 20.3x210 = 42.63 cm2
Area of cover plate required 42.63x1.05 = 44.762 cm3
Proposed two nos. cover plate at inner side
Proposed width of cover plate = 10.5 cm
Thickness of cover plate required 44.8/10.5/2 = 2.132
Provide 25 mm thk cover plate
Net area of cover plate 2.5x10.5x2 = 52.5 cm2
Hence safe
Permissible stress of weld as per Cl. 506.6.2.2 IRC 24:2001 = 1080 kg/cm2
Propossed thickness of weld = 1 cm
Axial stress 44.762x1581 = 70767.93 kg
strength of weld 0.7x1.0x1080 = 756 kg/cm
Length of weld required 70767/756 = 93.61 cm
No. of welds for two plates 4
Provided Length of splice plate 93.61/4 = 23.40 cm
Proposed length of cover plate 46.80 say 50 cm
Proposed size of Flange cover plates 2 nos-25x105x500 mm

Web cover plate

Net area of Web 12x559.4 = 67.128 cm2
Area of cover plate required 67.128x1.05 = 70.484 cm2
As the web splice is provided on both side net area required = 35.242 cm2
Proposed width of cover plate = 45 cm
Thickness of cover plate required 35.24/45 = 0.783
Provide 8 mm thk cover plate
Net area of cover plate 0.8x45x2 = 72 cm2

Permissible stress of weld as per Cl. 506.6.2.2 IRC 24:2001 = 1080 kg/cm2
Propossed thickness of weld = 0.6 cm
strength of weld 0.7x0.6x1080 = 453.6 kg/cm
