Hilary Swank: a different kind of star

From rags to riches* Hilary Swank became a successful American Academy Award-winning
actress. Born in Nebraska on 30 July 1974, daughter of Stephen Swank, an officer in the Air
National Guard and later a traveling salesman, and Judy Clough, Hilary hadn't an easy
childhood. When she was six she moved to a trailer park near Lake Samish, in Bellingham,
where she grew up.

Starting a career was as difficult as her upbringing. "Every time a producer told me I had no
talent, I refused to give up - I just worked harder", she confesses. Hilary's mother had always
told her everything was possible as long as people worked hard, so she kept that in mind all the
way. She was determined and optimistic and knew for a fact that success doesn't come easily.

Many casting directors told her repeatedly she wasn't pretty enough for the roles. Indeed, her
beauty is simple. She doesn't apply for the standard Hollywood physical attributes.

"You made yourself out of nothing, and you made me believe that I can do it too" is what
people who come up to her on the streets normally tell to Hilary. And they are totally right.

* "rags to riches" - an expression which refers to any situation in which a person rises from poverty to wealth, or
sometimes from obscurity to fame.
