Reflective Entries
This week you worked on your initial ideas and started your FMP
concept
Writing the concept help me develop my ideas as it allowed me to put my
thoughts on paper and helped me think of different thing to add to my
production before going out and shooting. I feel that if I did not write my
ideas down that it would have been a lot harder for me to think of a story
to go with the song, and to create a narrative, as I wanted to create
something completely different to the original. This is because I think that
the original music video to imagine dragons radioactive does not suite the
song.
It was suggested to me that I should use as much lip syncing as possible,
As I original didnt want to have that much lip syncing because I felt the I
could get enough interesting footage to make my video enjoyable to
watch, but it was said that have lip syncing can help develop the
narrative. As the person who lip syncing it is felling and going through
what the lyrics are saying.
This week you worked on your initial ideas and started your FMP
Research
I found thorough my research that my target audience is quite young this
is one of the reasons that I think that the original music video is for the
song is very childish as it has monsters pupates. Which is why I changed
my narrative for my music video as I was going to have the main
character end up committing suicide but after collecting research I thought
that was to dark and that a younger audience wouldnt understand what it
is about.
When gathering my primary research I found out that people would prefer
a good narrative for an indie rock song but to also have a strong character
that people can relate to as most indie rock song have a deep meaning
which is what I wanted from my video but I think that I should have made
my narrative a bit easier to understand as I dont think it came across in
the video
As I was researching my genre I found out there is normally a lot of
footage of the band. I also found out that they have deep meaning fully
narrative and lyrics because thats what they find most important about
music which is why they dress In dark clothing as not to take people
attention away from their music and the message they are trying to tell.
I think that though using all my research that was able to get a better
understand of what my target audience would like to see and I found that
my chosen genre is very narrative driven. I would have had footage of
people playing an instrument but I did not know anyone who is in a band
or who can play an instrument so instead I tried to create I in-depth
narrative.

Week 2 / 3 This week you will start your planning

What did you learn from your I learned that I need to make sure that my music video matches the lyrics
research? of the song so I am able to get the strong message of the song across to
the viewers. Although some indie rock band make very dark music videos
I feel that for my target audience that I cant make the song to dark/
complex so that people will be able to understand what is happening.

How will this be useful to your This is going to really affect my planning as I have had to change my
planning? narrative to suite my target audience because thing think that some
people would that that show young people message that suicide is an
easy way out of your problem so now I have made it so that although
people look calm and happy on the surface that there can always be thing
troubling people underneath which is why I have used a smoke bomb to
represent the character release their anger and frustration.

What sources of information did you
look at that were different from your
proposed project
Some other music video that I have watched for insertion where the King
Of Leon sex is on fire this was a dark music video as gave me my idea for
my original narrative before I changed it but I found that watch their music
video that they were saying was there past experiences and the song is
about heart break and how much it can hurt. I also looked at artist like the
artic monkeys because they have such a passion for their music and in
the music video that I watch show how happy making music makes them
as there more than just a band but you can see there they are all like
brother to one another.

What did you learn from your planning This week I learned that I need to make sure that am making a video that
this week will appeal to my target audience and to try and demonstrate the passion
that I have for music and to make my narrative easier to understand as I
was told that my narrative could be hard to portray on a video.

What issues did you encounter and
how did you overcome them?
I would say that the main issue that I came across was needing to change
my narrative as I have already started planning using this my old idea so I
had to change a lot of my planning. Another problem that I faced was
finding a suitable location to bale to set off the smoke bomb as I cant do it
in a public location as some people wont want lot of smoke in their faces.

Week 3 This week was the start of your production process

What practical work have you done
this week - and how helpful was your
earlier planning
This week I started filming some of my B-roll as my actor isnt available
this week so to make the most out of my time I stared my setting my
camera up on a tripod and stared filing the intro to my video as I want to
have a time-lapse of there clouds going passed so that I can put a title
over the top as there is no singing in the first thirty seconds of the video.

How will this be useful to you as your
production process continues
I think that getting my B-roll now will be benefit as it means that I will be
able to put more time into my main filing and will allow me to get the most
out of the nice weather as next week its meant to be raining a lot so I
want to get footage of clear blue skys as there is a lyric in the song that
talks about how the sun is going down.

What issues did you encounter and
how did you overcome them?
The main problem I faced is that I actor wasnt available to film but to get
around this I started filming my B-roll so that I have plenty of footage to
put in my production another thing I went and did was to go and find new
locations to potentially film in as I dont just want all my footage in one
location because I think that would make my production very boarding
and dull.

In this session I learned that I need to be more experimental with my
filming as a few of my clips are similar as most of them are at eye level so
I think I might try getting footage for high and low angles to make my
production more entreating to watch. I have also learned not to be so
reliant on other people and to always have a back-up plan in case things
dont go the way I wanted them to.
There was only one thing that I had not really tried before and that was
making a time lapses. Although this is a fairly simple and easy thing to do
I had never made one before but I was happy with the outcome that I had
of it as I think it really suites the opening sequence of the song has thirty
second without any singing, and because you can hear wind blowing in
the song it goes really nice with the footage.
I havent really tried anything else new as I have been sticking to what I
know but thats not what is going to get me the higher makes so I think I
am going to be a lot more experiment with my editing and try thing that I
havent before.
I found written feedback more useful as I was able to use it when working
at home which was very beneficial when we were working on our
research. If the feedback was written down then I will not have problems
with forgetting what I have been told which kept happening so I had to
keep re-asking the same question, which is not ideal with a large class. I
also think the written feedback as it can be more detailed and I can be
given more than just one bit of feedback where as if it was verbal
feedback it would only be one or two points for me to work on.
I think this will be useful as getting written feedback will allow me to work
on any other written work at home so I wont fall behind while I finish
filming my final major project I think I will find verbal feedback more useful
when I start editing my work as it will be a long drawn out process and I
dont have editing software at home so getting verbal feedback for my
teacher will allow me to work and change thing then and there
The main problem I have faced this week was filing the lip syncing as my
actor didnt really know the song very well so we had to kept reshooting
scenes so that it looks as good as possible, but to overcome this I had the
music playing in the background and before we started filing I let him read
his line by doing this we were able to get some really good clips.
Week 5 This week was your finishing off week - for both your edits an
written work

What feedback did you find most
useful verbal or written
I find that using verbal feedback much more useful when editing as I am
able to make the change that my teacher are suggesting straight away
and if I not too sure about what they are trying to explain then I can ask
them to expand upon what they are say so that I know exactly what it is
that I need to do to make my production better

How has this helped you meet your

My targets/ambitions where to create a professional looking music video
and to show the skills that I have learned over the last year. I know that
There is still a lot that I need to do to make my products look professional
but I am very happy with the overall outcome of the video as it was
something that I created on my own with little help from others. I think that
my editing was one of the best things about the video as I was
experimenting with effects and the colour of the footage and I think doing
this has made my product look a lot cleaner.

How helpful did you find the pitch
what feedback did you get?
I found the pitch very useful thanks to the feedback that was given. The
main thing that people said is that the narrative of the video was quite
hard to follow so next time I want to make it obvious and make the
message of the video clearer as it will make my future products better and
will hopefully get me the best possible grade.

How did your peer feedback help
A lot of the peer feed Back was good apart from saying that it is hard to
understand the narrative. Some of the more positive feedback was people
said they liked the intro and they think that the time-lapse was well made.
Another thing that people said they like the smoke bomb that I used as it
looked really nice with the sun coming though the smoke I didnt this to
add dramatic effect and show the release of his built up emotions.

What issues did you encounter and
how did you overcome them?
The only real problem I had while was that as I was editing the computer
turned off and I hadnt saved my editing so I had to start again which has
taught me to regularly save my work. I also had a problem with lining up
the lip-syncing that I filmed, as it was a very slow and tedious process. To
overcome this my teacher showed me a way to use the music on the
footage with the actual film, which was very useful in sort the problem.
