Testing and Evaluation

I. Methods
A. Criterion Referenced
1. Teach material to students and evaluate students according to their mastery. Letter
grades are involved.
B. Norm Referenced
1. Student is evaluated according to how he ranks in his population group. The student
may not have mastered the material at all.
C. No Reference
1. Show up, participate, get an A. Portfolio style grading.
II. Types of Evaluation
A. Tests
1. Objective - there is an answer and only one answer
2. Subjective - writing test, essay test
3. Essay - tend to be more subjective
B. Quizzes
1. General knowledge - recently taught material
2. Reading - day after read
3. Review - near the time when a test is given
C. Oral Evaluation
1. Book Reports
2. Projects

D. Standardized Tests - norm referenced
III. The Design
A. Standard Heading
1. On each page
B. Clear, well-written directions
1. Will help eliminate questions
C. Practical, consistent layout
1. Reduce the frustration that your student has

1. Should have 2/3 questions recall; 1/3 thinking questions
E. Question Types
1. Short Answer - it doesnt mean one word but short sentence
2. Completion - one word and the word is found at the end of the sentence
3. Matching - 5-7 items in matching; multiple sections of matching; have matching
section in like manner; all on one page
4. T/F - modified T/F; focused T/F; straight T/F
5. Multiple Choice - the stem (question) and the answers
6. Essay - need to know if it can be answered in the amount of time given

A. Protect test security

2. Tell them what to do with their test when its completed.

D. Grade Immediately
1. Give them back the next day
2. Go over the test for about 5-7 minutes
3. If they have a question, put a question mark next to the problem
4. If its a big test, wait to record grades
5. After grading and checking with students, itemized what they missed and analyze it.
E. Grading Quizzes
1. Have a pre-determined method of exchanging but vary your pattern.
2. The student should grade in the opposite utensil or different color
3. Write name at bottom of the paper saying they are the grader.
4. If there was a question a student didnt answer, put a wavy line in the blank.
5. Put a line through the number that is incorrect
V. Purpose of Evaluation
A. Students
1. Need to see evaluation to measure what they know
B. Parents
1. See information concerning their child whether its a strength or whether its a
weakness
C. Administration
1. Ask themselves if the curriculum is working properly. Also measure the teachers
effectiveness
D. Teachers
1. Need to see how their students are and assess if they are doing a good job.
