Feature article
Nowadays, studying well and having good
academic results are the priorities of students. In
this day and age, scoring badly in exams can be
just as troublesome as losing your job or getting
sacked. Luckily, 3E is a class that doesn't really
see studying as a problem, as everyone in the
3
class scores above average in exams. A student
called Terence Ho has outstanding results in
Mathematics and physics. Everybody seems to
be struggling in these two subjects. Therefore, for
this week's feature article, 3 Eager Beavers is
going to introduce star student Terence Ho! In
the following article, you will learn how to study
like a "Maths Pro" and how to score like a boss in
physics!
Terence has over 90 marks in Mathematics and
scored 78 in physics. Now that, is nothing short
of amazing. 3 Eager Beavers & Co. interviewed
Terence, and this academic master revealed his
studying secrets!
He believed that getting enough sleep was the
key to academic success. He goes to bed at 10
p.m. and wakes up at 7 am, in other words he
sleeps for 9 hours a day! What he says actually
has some scientific proof behind it, Dr.
Bartholomew Harte of Oxford University has
conducted studies proving that the more sleep
4
you get the more active your neurons are in your
brain the next day. Professor Khan Kadhal of
Kansas University has studies proving that the
more active the neurons are in your brain the
faster your brain operates, the, the more effective
you are when doing maths!
However, even though getting adequate rest is
essential, Terence believes that mathematics
practice is crucial. He used an amazing example
to explain his view:" just imagine a diamond, a
rough diamond that has just been mined out of
the ground. It is blunt, unpolished and very dull. It
looks ugly, but when it is processed, cut and
polished, the diamond becomes the apple of
many lady's eyes. We are all diamonds that have
just been mined out of the ground, and to
become the apple of people's eyes, we must
work hard and practice, as practice makes
perfect! The process of practicing and working
hard are identical to the process of a diamond
being cut and polished. The process is tough and
painful, but, the light and the glory you receive on
5
the other side of the tunnel more than makes up
for the hard work that you put in". From that
quote we can see that how important practice
and hard work is. Terence claims that he does 10
hard mathematics questions daily to stimulate his
brain and prepare for the exam! Now that is hard
work! Are you willing to put in those hours to
score great in mathematics?
Terence's final tip on maths was being smart
during the exam. He said that "no matter how
much practice you do, if you mess up in the
exam, that's it, your grades are finished!. He did
give us advice on the how to avoid a disaster like
this though. He stated that having 10 hours of
sleep before the day of the exam was
indispensable. He also advised us to keep an eye
on the timer and use the final five minutes of the
exam to check through our maths papers. He told
us to stay focused on the paper and think hard
when encountering a challenging question. With
all of Terence is tips and secrets in mathematics,

6
I'm sure that if you follow his advice, you'll see
improvement in your maths score!
Terence is a born physicist! He got a great score
in physics! He was very generous and eager in
giving tips to 3 Eager Beavers & Co. Many
students are struggling with physics, and after
doing the exam papers, students are often heard
saying things along the lines of "this paper is too
hard, I couldn't do it in time!" With Terence's tips,
we hope to solve these problems, and improve
the scores of all students!
He said that when doing physics, we had to be
calm. If we were too anxious and nervous, our
minds couldn't focus, resulting in bad results.
Terence calms his mind down before exams by
closing his eyes and breathing in heavily for a
minute before the exam starts. He claims that this
slows down the heart rate, thus making us
calmer.

7
Once you have a calm mind, you can efficiently
do your paper. Terence told us to be careful
when reading questions. He states that as
physics includes concave and convex lenses, the
two types of lenses that can be easily mixed up,
we have to be extra careful when answering the
questions. All it takes is an incorrect
interpretation of lenses, and all of your light rays
which you have drawn may become come wrong.
Terence's last tip to us was being familiar with the
areas to be examined on. He told us that in
physics, you have to be extra familiar with the
concept of light rays. We also had to be familiar
with the properties of images. Once we are
familiar with these concepts, he claims that doing
the exam paper would be like a breeze!
Terence's tips and advice are actually very
simple and reasonable. If we can do what he
does, then Im sure that we will all get
outstanding results on maths and physics in our

8
next exam! To all readers, from now on, let's
work harder and aim for the top!

Inside Joke
There are lots of joke in our class , for example
Terence said the all girls in our class loved him
and Terence have named as godfather when we
were in form 1 .

(TERENCE PIC )

9
Also , in form 3 , we always talk about Miss
Chan , because she have a mantra , will be
processed again ()

And , there are a joke from chemistry lesson too ,

SO42- , it is because when we read SO42- , it
look like a foul language , thats why we always
laugh with it.

Agony aunt
Dear Anne,
I've got new neighbours who have just moved
in to the flat above me. They play their music
really loud and continue to play it even during
late hours. I do not wish to fall out with my
neighbours by complaining to them however
their behaviour has become intolerable. Can
you help me solve this problem?
Frustrated in Central
11
Dear frustrated,
I can understand you not wanting to fall out with
your neighbours. If you handle this situation
delicately, there is no reason for you to fall out.
The best way to deal with this problem is to call
up the management in your building. You can tell
the security guard about the problem. It is their
job to handle situations like yours.
If calling up the management is ineffective, you
could go upstairs to have a pleasant chat with
your neighbours, and explain to them that their
music is causing you inconvenience and
disturbing you. I'm sure after a direct face-to-face
discussion, your neighbours will understand and
will try to avoid trouble.
I hope that my suggestions have helped you.

Dear Anne,
I have just moved to Hong Kong from India. I
am finding it hard to make friends in my new
school. All of my friends speak Cantonese and
I can't. My English isn't very fluent, and
12
theirs isn't that fluent either, therefore, we
can't communicate well. Other than
communication problems, my classmates don't
really seem to like me. Can you help me make
friends please?
Friendless in Yuen Long

Dear friendless,
I am sorry to hear that you're having trouble
making friends. Don't be discouraged, this is
normal.
First, you should always have a smile on your
face. The most universal language is the smile.
Scientists have proved that smiling makes people
more attractive, thus, allowing them to make
friends easier.
Second, as you're now a resident in Hong Kong,
you should really make an effort to learn the
local language. This can be achieved by having
tutorial classes outside of the school. In these
13
tutorial classes, you might find some people that
have similar backgrounds to you, and you can
make friends with them.
As well as finding new friends in these tutorial
classes you are also learning the language that
the local kids speak, therefore, you are hitting two
birds with one stone.
I hope my suggestions have helped.

Dear Anne,
I'm a 14 year old boy and have put on a
significant amount of weight over the past few
months. I'm 154 centimetres tall and over 70 kg.
Because of my weight, I'm often laughed at in
school, and to add to my worries, the girls around
me seem to avoid me and call me "fatty" behind
my back. Can you please help me to lose weight?!
Confused in Kowloon
Dear confused,

14
You seem to be in a tough situation. To lose weight,
you can do the following: eat less, exercise more
and eat healthily.
Eating less results in taking in less calories. Calories
make us fat. Also, if we eat too much, our bodies
can't digest all of the food that we just took in, thus,
turning the excess food into fat.
Being fat or not revolves around the amount of
calories that we intake. Doing exercise burns
calories. To lose weight efficiently, we should
exercise daily. I recommend running or swimming as
these are aerobic activities. Aerobic activities can
burn the most calories.
Finally, as well as eating less, we should eat
healthily. We need to have a healthy diet. I have
written a diet plan for you to follow over the next few
weeks. If you follow it, I guarantee that you will see
your weight improve dramatically.
I hope that my suggestions have helped. If you
encounter any more problems, feel free to write to
me again.
Anne

Interview with Terence

16
17
T: Terence Q: interviewer
Q: Hi Terence I'm from Eager Beaver
Magazine. For today's interview we would like
to ask you a few questions about your school
life. As I know you did pretty well in your test
and exam. So do you have any study hacks or
tips to make study easier ?
T: For me I think my biggest tip for studying is
to set myself a goal. For example, I would tell
myself I have to be in top five in my class. To
achieve my goal I have to work real hard so I
could get in top five and that could motivate
me to study. Also I will have a competition with
my classmates to see who can get a higher
mark. Just because I don't want to lose I will
put more effort into studying. Also tip for
studying is to reward yourself after finish
studying a chapter. My last tip is for maths or
physics exam which requires a lot of
calculations during the exam. I think that going

18
to bed earlier the day before have the exam is
a key to success. You don't want to feel tired
during the exam. You need a clear mind when
doing complicated
calculations.

Q: Thanks Terence for the tip for studying

and preparing for the exam. I'm definitely
gonna try it next time. Now let's go on to the
next question which is something a lot of our
viewer wanted to know. Why are you so
famous in class?
T: Honestly I don't really know why. Maybe I'm
kinda funny and a little annoying. I like to
interact with my classmates. Also I might be a
little wired which caught a lot of people's
attention and maybe that's the reason why I'm
famous. I think this class is very simple just if I
don't brag people would like to be friends with

19
me. Basically they are really friendly and it's
easy to make friends with everyone.
Q: Finally one more question. Why did your
classmates call you Godfather? Did you make
it up yourself?
T: No, I definitely wouldn't call myself
godfather! My classmates call me godfather
because I always talk to them seriously and
they think that I looks like a godfather talking
about the sentence in the bible. That's the
reason why they call me godfather. I've been
called as godfather for two years and I've got
used to it already.
