toWestBengal,whereituniteswiththeHooghly.TheprojectcomprisesachainofsmalldamsonthetributariesofDamodar.
However,thereareonlyafewHydelPowerstations.Anavigablecanalhasalsobeenconstructed.TheHydelPowerisfedintoa
commongrid,inwhichbigthermalpowerstationsfurnishmajorityofelectricityforthematuringindustrialcomplexes,extendingover
southeastBiharandborderingpartsofWestBengal.TheprojectwatershalfmillionhectaresoflandinWestBengalandpartsof
southeastBihar.

BhakraNangalProject
TheBhakraNangalProjectisagloriousinstanceofwatermanagementonscientificlines,onthelargestextent.TheBhakraDamhas
beenerectedatacalculatedpoint,wheretwohillsonbothsidesoftheSatlujstandveryneartoeachother.Thedam,asaresult,is
notverywide.Itisthehighestgravitydamintheworld.Theheightreaches226metresfromtheriverbed.Itislocatedintheseismic
zone,andthehillsthatactashugenaturalwallsforstashing7,80,000hectaremetresofwater,andaremadeupofunstratified
matter.Beingveryfeebleandfragile,thehillsarereinforcedbyinstillingthemwithenormousconcreteblocksatregularperiods.The
manmadelake,GobindSagarinHimachalPradeshhasbeennamedafterGuruGovindSingh,the10thGuruoftheSikhs.It
watersamassiveareaof1.4millionhectares.TheBhakraNangalpowerplantontheSatlujcreates1204mwofelectricityeveryyear.
TheprojectprovidesthestatesofHimachalPradesh,PunjabHaryana,RajasthanandtheNationalCapitalTerritoryofDelhi.

TungbhadraProject:
TheTungbhadraProjectisajointlyundertakenbyKarnatakaandAndhraPradeshononeofthetributariesoftheKrishnariver,
theTungbhadra.Ithasaprospectofirrigating4.97lakhhectaresoffarmingland.TheTungbhadraProjectisalmost50metreshigh
and2.5kmlong,anditsuppliesaround4,00,000hectaresinKarnatakaandAndhraPradesh.

IndiraGandhiCanalProject
TheIndiraGandhiCanalProjectinRajasthanisanaspiredstrategytoobtainfreshareasunderirrigation,sothatadditionalareas
canalsobereared.ThewatersofBeas andRavihadtobechannelisedtowardsSatlujandarestorednearFirozepur,Punjab,in
Harikebarrage.ThePongDamconstructedontheBeas,accumulates6,90,000hectaremetresofwater.Ithashelpedtoreroutethe
watersofBeasintoSatluj,througharegularisedmanner,sothatIndiraGandhiorRajasthanCanal,thelongestirrigationalcanalin
theworld,canwaterGanganagar,BikanerandJaisalmerdistrictsofnorthwestRajasthan.Thecentralcanalis468kilometresin
length.WatersofSatluj,BeasandRaviarenowbeingusedbyIndiatoirrigateitswaterthirstylandsinthenorthwesternpartsofthe
country.
