(Measurementofreflectioncoefficient,returnloss,andSWR)

>>>workinprogress.

Reflectometry:
Oneoftheprincipalapplicationsoftheimpedancebridgeisthemeasurementofforward
andreflectedpowerintransmissionlinesthisusuallybeingexpressedintermsofSWR
orreturnloss(tobedefinedshortly).Thebridgehowever,cannotmeasurereflections,it
canonlymeasurequantitieswhichcanbederivedfromvoltageandcurrent.Theratioof
forwardtoreflectedpowerinalineisafunctionoftheloadimpedanceandthe
characteristicimpedanceand,inthecaseofalosslesslineatleast,remainsconstant
throughoutthelengthoftheline.Theactualinputimpedanceofamisterminatedline
however,canvaryradicallydependingonitslengthandsoimpedanceonitsownisnot
sufficienttodeterminetherequiredpowerratio.Thekeytoreflectometrytherefore,isto
devisebridgeswhichcanmeasuresomequantitywhichisconservedregardlessofthe
lengthoftheline,andtoderivetherequiredinformationfromthat.
Considerawavetravelingfromgeneratortoloadinalosslesstransmissionline.As
thewavemovesalongtheline,ithasnoknowledgeoftheconditionsitwillmeetwhenit
arrivesattheloadandsotherelationshipbetweenvoltageandcurrentintheforward
travelingwaveisdictatedentirelybythesurgeresistance(i.e.,thecharacteristic
resistance),R0,oftheline.Thuswemaywrite:
VF=IFR0 (1)
Ifthelineisnotterminatedinitscharacteristicresistance,onlypartoftheenergyinthe
wavewillbeabsorbed(orperhapsnoneifthelineisopenorshortcircuit),anda
reflectedwavewillbelaunchedonajourneyfromtheloadtothegenerator.This
reflectedwavewillalsohavenoknowledgeoftheconditionswhichprevailatits
destination,andsotherelationshipbetweenvoltageandcurrentwillalsobedetermined
solelybyR0,i.e.,
VR=IRR0 (2)
Inthiscase,aminussignisrequiredinordertomaintainconsistencyinthedefinitionsof
theforwardandreflectedwavesi.e.,wemustassumethateitherthevoltageorthe
currentisreversedrelativetotheforwardwaveatthereflectionboundary.Tounderstand
thispoint,notethatifthelineisopencircuit,avoltagemayexistatthediscontinuity,but
thesumofforwardandreflectedcurrentsmustbezero,i.e.,thesignofthecurrentmust
reverseasthewaveturnsaroundandheadsbacktowardsthegenerator.Conversely,if
thelineisshortcircuit,thenafinitecurrentmayexistattheendoftheline,butthesum
oftheforwardandreflectedvoltagesmustbezero,i.e.,thesignofthevoltagemust
reverse.Whenpartialreflectionoccurs,thevoltagereversesrelativetotheforwardwave
ifthemagnitudeoftheloadimpedanceislessthanR0,andthecurrentreversesifthe
magnitudeoftheloadimpedanceisgreaterthanR0buttheminussignintheexpression
abovemaintainsconsistencyineithercase,andallowstheforwardandreversewave
definitionstobecombined(i.e.,tobeusedassimultaneousequations).
Wecannot,ofcourse,measuretheforwardandreflectedvoltagesandcurrents

IfVisthevoltageacrosstheload,andIisthecurrentflowingintheload,thenwemay

Theobservationsmadesofararesummarisedinthediagrambelow:

Fromtherelationshipsgivenabove,wehaveIF=VF/R0andIR=VR/R0.Substitutingthese
expressionsintoequation(4)gives:
I=(VF/R0)(VR/R0)=(VFVR)/R0
andusing(3)gives:
(VF+VR)/Z=(VFVR)/R0
whichcanberearrangedasfollows:
(VF+VR)R0=(VFVR)Z
VFR0+VRR0=VFZVRZ
VRR0+VRZ=VFZVFR0
VR(Z+R0)=VF(ZR0)
Togive:

Thebalanceconditionis:

VvVi/2=0

where,fromthederivationgiveninsection?:

Vv/V=v=(Rv//jXC1//jXC2)/jXC2

andthecurrenttransferfunctionatbalance(fromsection?)is:

Vi/V=0=(jXLi//Ri)/NiR0

Sincethecurrentsampleissharedbytwobridges,wemustdivideitbytwo.Hence,at
balance:

v=0/2

i.e.,
http://g3ynh.info/zdocs/bridges/reflectom/part1.html 7/13
2017611 G3YNHinfo:Reflectometry.

(Rv//jXC1//jXC2)/jXC2=(jXLi//Ri)/(2NiR0)

whichuponinversionofbothsidesgives:

jXC2[(1/jXC1)+(1/jXC2)+(1/Rv)]=2NiR0[(1/Ri)+(1/jXLi)]

RecallingthatXC=1/2fCand1/j=j,thisrearrangesto:

[(C1 +C2)/C2]+jXC2/Rv=[2NiR0/Ri]j2NiR0/XLi

Hence,equatingtherealparts:

(C1 +C2)/C2=2NiR0/Ri x.1

and,equatingtheimaginaryparts:
