General Description

2. General Description

Abbreviation 1: VL-66203 Receiver

Abbreviation 2: VL-66203 Transmitter

The VL-66203 system (DVI and USB CAT Extender) consists of a transmitter and a receiver module
and is used to extend maximum distance of USB and DVI link.

Table 1: TMDS maximum transmitting range for different configurations

The maximum distance of the transmission depends on the quality of cables and used resolu-
tion.

The maximum USB path distance is 40 m. VL-66203 is designated to be used in KVM sys-
tems, this implies USB 1.1 Low-Bandwidth (1,5 Mbit/s). VL-66203 can be used with devices
which use USB 1.1 Full-Bandwidth (12 Mbit/s), in this case a CAT7 cable (for example Draka
Super Screen UC900 CAT7 AWG 27) is recommended for the USB path extension.

Installation

4.1 Connection

Abbreviation 3: Connection

DVI signals are transmitted through two CAT cables. TMDS (Transition-Minimized Differential
Signaling) path transfers high-speed video signals (RGB and pixel clock), DDC (Display Data
Channel) path transfers DVI DDC signals and additional signals like a Hot Plug Detection. For
establishing proper DVI link between signal source and sink both CAT cables must be con-
nected.

DIL switch on the front panel of the receiver sets level of equalization. The switch on the front
panel of the transmitter is used to set de-emphasis. In most cases transmitter de-emphasis
should be set to -3 dB and line equalization should be done with receiver setting.

Table below contains example settings for 1920 x 1200 resolution at 60 Hz vertical refresh rate and

attenuation characteristics and lengths are comparable.

4.2 Mounting

The system offers the possibility of din rail mounting. For this purpose the brackets, depend-
ing on the installation position, attached to the underside of each unit to lock on the rail. An
earth terminal is located on the side of each module. RJ-45 sockets can be used with sleeve
housings, for example VS-08-T-RJ45/IP 20 1688638 from Phoenix Contact.

5.1 Start-up

Following Start up procedure should follow:

1. Switch on Monitor (minimum in stand-by)
2. Switch on Receiver / Transmitter
3. Switch on Computer

5.2 Alarm Monitoring

In case of an error (power supply failure, interruption of connection) at the output X1-3/4, a re-
lay contact is opened. Additionally the Link loss LED ERR will be on.
