MEET OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBERS
This month, NALAC sat down with our newest board members, Gabriel Abaroa and
Ramn Rivera-Servera, to hear their perspectives on the field of arts and cultures. We are
proud to have the guidance of a dedicated Board of Directors, and are excited to share
their perspectives with our communities. As artists, art administrators, scholars, organizers,
and more, our board members shape the work we do so that we can best serve Latinx
communities around the country. Ramn Rivera-Servera serves as the Chair of
Performance Studies Department and Director of Graduate Studies at Northwestern
University, and Gabriel Abaroa is the President/CEO of The Latin Recording Academy.

Connecting with Latinx Arts in the New South

Earlier this month, artists, organizers, and scholars from
31 towns and cities in 10 different states convened for
the 31st NALAC Regional in Charlotte. The Regional
represented an opportunity to listen and connect with
cultural workers in the Southeast particularly those
advocating for undocumented, queer, and rural
communities. Were thankful to the North Carolina
Humanities Council for their hospitality and collaboration.

the themes explored.

Federal Arts Updates

Federal funding for the arts is facing many challenges and our advocacy is important to
continue to make the case for the investment in the nations cultural traditions. Recently,
there has been some movement at the Federal level around the arts, and we invite you
to consider some of the updates and reach out to your Congressional
representatives to support positive legislation! One piece of legislation we are excited
about is the American Arts Revival Act of 2017, which helps reduce the massive amount
of student loan debt felt by millions of young adults while concurrently encourages
participation in the arts- which is scientifically proven to benefit the lives of those who
engage. We also support Sen. Leahy's Artist-Museum Partnership Act of 2017, which
would more fairly grant tax deductions artists donating their work.
