On April 13th 2017, students from Career High School took part in its annual Choices Day activities, where
people from the community came in to talk about their careers or life experiences. The day was created with
the intention of educating CHS students on paths they can take in their future and about the work that mem-
bers of the community do.

There were about 40 people and organizations from community who made an appearance at choices day in-
cluding: Alumni of Career High School, Ranger Ray (along with some animals), and the New Haven Fire De-
partment. Even the New Haven SWAT Team showed up to give tours of their armored vehicle. The keynote
speaker for the day was Robert Felder, who is the creator of the Driven2Inspire Organization.

On top of people from the community coming to CHS to talk to students, some of Careers very own senior
students ran their own workshops for their capstone projects. Senior Glory Adekanye ran a college prep semi-
nar for juniors, while in the cafeteria, TED Talks were being given by Career seniors. Mya Yorke gave a talk a
on body shaming and what it meant to her. Nolan Greene discussed his political views. Rory Garhart gave a
speech on his experiences with males showing emotion, while I talked about my experiences with the stereo-
types associated with being black in America. Hannan Khan shared his story and what it meant to be the son
of an immigrant.

Mrs. Grandfield, who spent 4 months planning for the days events with Ms, Westefeld, said the day was both
positive and successful.

The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read book in New
Haven this year is Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto
Urrea. About Into the Beautiful North:
Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican
village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the Unit-
ed States to find work. Recently, it has dawned on her that he
isn't the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost
no men in the village--they've all gone north. While watch-
ing The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself
and recruit seven men--her own "Siete Magnficos"--to repopu-
late her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan
on taking it over.

Filled with unforgettable characters and prose as radiant as the

Sinaloan sun, Into the Beautiful North is the story of an irresist-
ible young woman's quest to find herself on both sides of the

Good Vibes at the Spring Festival
Heaven Bradley

The Spring Festival took place at Ca-

reer High on April 22nd from 10-
2pm. If you weren't at the festival,
then you missed out, because every-
one had a good time! Special thanks
to the Junior Class president Azhaleia
Reyes for making it happen. Yes it it
rained, but it wasn't stopping Career
from showing their spirit! There were
two food trucks, 11 vendors, and a
bounce house. Our own Career stu-
dents Karissa Cosenza and Yeimy
Morales had their own table selling
products-- make sure you see them

for some lipgloss, eyelashes, phone cases, screen
protectors, and speakers.

A guest rapper, DR3, performed three songs for the crowd, which everyone loved. There were guest dancers
from a local performing arts group. The DJ was KidRich. There was an art and craft area where people could
make stuff and draw.

Career students came early to help set up tables and prepare. Mondre Credle and Aaron Brown made it their
duty to get the crowd jumping! The Spring Festival goes to show that to have a good time, you just have to
have the right people around you.

South America Suffers Flooding

Sheyla Pedraza

Since the beginning of the year, there have been hundreds

of deaths in Peru caused by the worst flooding there has
been since 1997 and 1998. The desert is becoming tropical
for a period, explained Abraham Levy, a Peruvian weather
expert, he also agreed that this year's floods is the most se-
vere since 1997 and 1998, when a storm called El Nino oc-
curred.

In Barba Blanca, Peru, a mud sheet covered the whole vil-

lage, yet 150 people who lived there managed to get out and
find shelter. Even in Ecuador and Colombia, there have
been floods and heavy rains that have killed hundreds and
People struggle to escape after a landslide caused a displaced thousands. In Mocoa, Colombia 293 people died,
bridge collapse in Peru. (Reuters) while in Peru the flooding has destroyed 14,000 homes and
made 150,000 people homeless. Career student Ashley Cisne-
ros said, I think it's really sad because their lives are ruined since they don't have anything anymore and they
lost everything. And they need all the help they can get, because their business are ruined. I also feel sad be-
cause [Peru] is my country and some of my family members live there, and I don't want my family or country
suffering from this bad flooding.

Dream Team Takes A Trip To Edgewood
Heaven Bradley

Do you guys know

Jay Kemp? Do you
have a dream? Do
you need one good
motivational push? I
suggest you talk to
him! Recently, he
took a group of kids
from Dream Team
on a trip to Edge-
wood Magnet School
to talk to kids about
their dreams.

Dream Team has a

bunch of principles,
but the two main
principles Career stu-
dents focused on and
spoke to the kids
about were Photos/Jay Kemp
dreaming starts with
seeing, and NEVER give up! Dreaming starts with seeing means you have to visualize your success. You
need to see success in your head. What you eat that day? What are you wearing? Where are you? What award
are you winning? Whos in the audience cheering you on? What does your job building look like? The second
principle is to never give up, because no one will make that dream come true but you. Accomplishing a goal
starts with you realizing it and making it happen!

Something impossible is imPOSSIBLE! Dont let anyone tell you that

you cant, because you can. Even when you get knocked down and
theres negative comments, get up and wipe those knees off. Prove
them wrong and turn those negative comments into positive ones and
keep that drive that you started with! When the Dream Team went
into each classroom and introduced ourselves, we told them our sto-
ries. One Career student, Willie Gulley told his story about how he
wanted to be football player and then he got hurt, which set him back.
However, then he started wrestling and now hes an all-star wrestler. I
always wanted to be a pediatrician ever since I was younger, but then
I discovered I had a talent to do makeup, so I decided to be a makeup
artist as another career. Youre not limited to one career, you can pur-
sue as many options as you would like! Tecumseh Collins introduced
himself and his dream to become a flight nurse. Ronnie Echevarria
struggled with wanting to be in the medical field or the business field,
but then came to dream of opening an independent coffee shop in the
tourist area of Massachusetts. Kayla Claiborne introduced herself and
her dream to become a personal accountant.

4
There was this one class that was having a hard time, but once we
started speaking to them, they were interested and they got it to-
gether. When we asked one of the girls in the class to share her
dream, she told us her entire vision and said that she would be
working in her pumps and suit. It felt good to actually inspire kids
and to tell them to get started and really dig deep and think! I wish
I had that opportunity as a younger kid to go through this experi-
ence as they did! In another class, a much younger girl knew a lot
about her future career. We asked her about her future and she
said things that you wouldn't believe a kid that age to say or know.
It was pretty impressive!

The advice we left the students with was to not get in the wrong
mix and mess up what you have already done. Take it seriously
and plan and manage your time. Dont limit yourself, and theres
always another way!

The Dream Team would love to give Jay Kemp a big thank you for giving us this opportunity. Everyone
was a little shy at first, but we all opened up and rocked it! I personally would love to thank him because be-
fore this experience, I wasn't really thinking deeply about what I wanted to do. Every time Jay Kemp brought
up a cool idea, I would say I don't know, but he would just tell me these convincing words to let me know
that Im capable of doing it-- no matter what comes in the way.

Teacher of the Month: Mr. Merk

Gabby Banks

You can tell that Mr. Merk loves his job and he loves having intellectual conversations with his students. He
trusts his students and treats them respectfully. He cares more about his students knowing the material than
keeping on schedule or getting grades in. Mr. Merk is inspiring, hopefully he knows that most (if not all) of his
students love him.
Gabby, Senior

I love how Mr. Merk brings the Canadian culture to his class.
Mya, Senior

He is a very knowledgeable, explanatory person. Whenever you

want to talk, he starts a whole conversation and goes into depth
about something you may be wondering.
Tahnele, Junior

He changed my entire world view of history. I actually enjoy his-

tory now. He deserves better. He supports the students. Dyuthi,

Happy Easter!
Heaven Bradley

Easter is a joyful holiday! The Easter bunny is coming, so

have your cameras ready ! Families, get ready for the egg
hunting contests, decorating your eggs, stuffing your faces
with rich chocolate, marshmallow peeps, and JellyBeaanssss!!
Easter took place this year on Sunday, April 16th, 2017. Most of your favorite stores were closed due to the
holiday. Buses ran on a Sunday Schedule as well.

Easter is a Christian holiday which celebrates Jesus Christs resurrection from the dead, but in Pagan times,
many groups of people organized spring festivals which celebrated the re-birth of nature.

Symbols of Easter: Easter Sunday in Various Languages:

The cross that Jesus was crucified on Easter Sunday-English
(Christian Believers) Pascua-Spanish
Eggs --Hebrew
Nests - Arabic
Lambs -Korean
The Easter bunny (which started in the
Frste pskedag-Norwegian
1700s)
Ostersonntag-German
Did you know
The largest Easter egg was 25ft high and 8000 lbs, created with chocolate and marshmallow and steel frame.
The White House celebrates Easter by racing with boiled eggs along the lawn. The first egg rolling event took
place in 1878 with president Rutherford B. Hayes. People considered egg rolling as a symbol of the blockage
of Jesuss stone from rolling.

Hu$tle: How to Make a Bean This Summer

Heaven Bradley

Summer is approaching, and the majority of you guys are looking for jobs and want to have your own. Many
jobs that are available for students ages 16 and up will be at camps. Also, many retail stores will be looking
forward to hiring teenagers for the season! If I were you, I would search for jobs that are hiring on the actual
store or company websites, Snag-A-Job, Indeed.com, etc. In addition, I would walk into the stores and ask as
well! Fill out an application ASAP. After two days, I would call every day to follow up. It can help to call
multiple times per day if youre able to speak with people working different shifts. Speak nicely and without
being rude. When you want a job, dont come off edgy or demanding. Ask questions politely, compromise,
dont look for confrontation, and DONT HAVE AN ATTITUDE! When you get called for an interview,
dress formally and always have a folder with your resume, any awards you may have received, and other
things (like a CPR certification) that you think might impress the manager.

Finding Success on the SAT
Miles Dylan Wallace

As a senior who has taken the

SAT on more than one occasion,
I understand that the test can be
difficult, even nerve racking.
Although the Juniors took the
SATs in school on April 4,
2017, here are some tips for stu-
dents who will be taking the test
in the upcoming months.

Underline the important

part of any question that
you do not understand. This
may seem boring and time
consuming, and it actually
may be. However, underlin-
ing important parts Rememberyou can get free personalized SAT practice on khanacademy.org.
of questions that you may not under-
stand will force you to pay attention so you can focus your thinking on those parts of the question. Focus-
ing on parts of questions that you do not understand will help you understand the question and ultimately
help you to choose the best possible answer.

Read the questions before you read a passage. Reading the questions before reading a passage in the
English portion of the test will give you an idea of what you should look for while you are reading. For
example, if you are reading a passage on different types of fruit and there is a question about apples, youll
know to annotate or mark the sentences that talk about apples so you can reference that part of the passage
quickly and easily.

Don't Leave Anything Blank. If there is a question that you do not know the answer to, think about it
for a minute at the very most, then skip it and come back to it. If, when you come back to the question,
you still do not know the answer, make a well-reasoned guess as to what the answer may be. Remember
that there are no points are taken off of your final score for wrong answers.

Keep calm! Yes, this step is much easier said than done. The test booklet seems thick and there are a
lot of bubbles to fill in on your answer sheet, but remember to just take the test question by question. Fo-
cusing on the section that you are currently working on instead of counting how many questions you have
left in the entire test will make the test seem shorter than it is and be a better use of your time. Yes, the test
is long, but it has been done by millions before you. You can complete it as well.

Take Care of Yourself! How you sleep the night before and what you eat for breakfast the day of the
test plays a role in how well you do on the test. Make sure you get a good night's rest before, so you are
not tired going into the test. Eating a well-balanced breakfast will help you concentrate better during the
test.

Good luck to all those who will be taking the SATs in the upcoming months!

Texting and Driving: Never Worth It
Heidy Ayala

One out of every four car accidents involves a driver on their cell phone. Many teens and even adults think
that it's okay to text and drive, as long as they don't get caught. Little do they know that in just a blink of an
eye, they can do so much damage and endanger the lives of other drivers on the road and even pedestrians.

Cell Phones throughout time have evolved and have become easier to become distractions. In many ways, cell
phones getting smarter is a good thing, but they shouldn't distract a driver. A drivers total focus should be on
the road and not on a message or a notification that can wait until they are off the road and out of harm's way.
Not only can you cause a car accident by using your phone, but you also receive a fine for $125, so think to
yourself: is it really worth losing $125 over not waiting to text back?

In 2010, a was survey done to determine what age groups text and drive the most. Doing this survey, it was
discovered that 18-29 year olds text and drive more frequently than any other age group.

Technology is advancing every day. Police use breathalyzers to determine whether the driver has consumed
alcohol or not, and just like this breathalyzer there is a brand new textalyzer. Engineer Lee Papathanasiou
says that all you have to do is connect a cord to the drivers phone, which will only take about 90 seconds to
process all the data from the phone, showing all of the recent activities with a time stamp attached. It will
show what apps were opened and in use. This allows police officers to determine whether or not drivers were
in use of their cell phones, even if they werent texting.

In New York, the bill to authorize police officers to use the textalyzer is still pending on its decision by its law-
makers. Other cities around the United States are also trying to get this device to be used in their states. While
other cities consider different ways to keep the roads safer and drivers off their phones, the textalyzer is still a
likely possibility.

Depression: What Helps?
Gabby Banks

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, depression is described as a mental condition characterized by

feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically also with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, often ac-
companied by lack of energy and disturbance of appetite and sleep. Depression can be described in many
ways, but you will never truly understand depression until you have it. Once you have depression, it feels that
it is nearly impossible to get rid of it. Here are some tips on how to try to manage depression and get rid of it.

TIP 1: You need to keep in touch with your friends and family.
Your friends love you for who you are. If they dont, you may need to rethink your friend choice. When it
comes to depression, people almost always isolate themselves and stop talking to the people they care about. I
know it is hard to find the will to talk to anyone, but sometimes its exactly what you need. They will help you
get out of your depressive rut. You need to break out of your shell of depression and return to the world, where
people care for you.

TIP 2: Do what makes you happy.

Sometimes the simplest things can help you when it comes to depression. If you like to sing, dance, write, or
anything-- just do it, it will help you feel better. It will help as long as you arent listening to depressing music.
For example, Pain by Three Days Grace, is extremely depressing. Sometimes you need to pick up new hob-
bies maybe sports if you are feeling adventurous. Mostly you need to try and express yourself through some-
thing creative. Most of all you need to stop putting yourself down. Love yourself, because if you cant love
yourself how is are you supposed to love anyone else.

TIP 3: Treat your body right.

You need to treat your body right for your depression to get any better. This means that you need to get 8
hours of sleep, which in this school it seems impossible. Every day, teachers keep giving you mountains of
work; even when you make a dent in it, it can feel daunting when the next day there is going to be another
mountain. You need to organise and prioritise your work by; what needs to get done now, what can wait a bit,
but altogether when can you do it. You got this, you can do this. You just have to believe in yourself.

TIP 4: Eat better

You also need to eat healthy, I know it can be easier to eat pizza than to eat fruit. Also it may just be easier in
the morning or whenever to skip a meal altogether, but please dont. Your body is not going to be happy with
you. Our cafeteria offers apples, pears, and oranges. These are 100% better than nothing, or than eating some-
thing super unhealthy. Love your body by treating it right.

TIP 5: The Outernet

I know this sounds weird coming from a couch potato, but you do need to go outside and enjoy the sun. I am
not saying you need to run 100 miles, I am saying just spend some time outside. It is no longer winter, so you
no longer need to hibernate at home binge watching 13 Reasons Why, Orange is the New Black, House of
Cards, The 100, Gotham, or Game Thrones. You need to get off your butt and walk outside for at least 15
minutes.

If you at least follow some of these tips it should help a little. I am not saying it will cure your problems, these
tips will help you go through the life of highschool. Good luck and Happy Hunger Games... I mean be happy
in school.

Editors Note: If you feel that you are experiencing symptoms of depression, please visit a counselor, the
clinic, tell a trusted teacher, or dial 211.

College Essay Feature: Hard Work
Hannan Khan

Nine months ago, my familys business, a gas sta-

tion, had not been doing well financially. We tried
our best to keep the business afloat as long as we
could, hoping it would thrive again like it used to.
However, it came to the point where my family
decided to close the business. So, my father placed
a call to the landlord, letting him know that we
wanted to shut down the business and move on.
My father got in touch with the landlords new
tenant and began discussing what to do about the
inventory. The new tenant said, Ill get back to
you. Three weeks went by. As each week went
on, my father kept on trying to get in touch with
the new tenant, but there was no response.

Finally, after weeks of suspense, my father re-

ceived a call from our landlord at seven oclock in
the evening. My father told the family that the
landlord had said in a disrespectful manner, You
have to be out by tomorrow afternoon. The new
tenant does not want to buy your inventory. Eve-
rything has to be out: shelving, racks, coolers.
My family started to panic, except for my father. The only people who were available to clear out our gas sta-
tion were my father and myself. Both my brother and sister were at college. By the time either of my siblings
would have gotten home, it would have been too late, and my mother was too sick to help us.

At this point, my father had no choice but to liquidate the inventory. My father turned to his friend Raj for
help. He helped us remove many of the heavy items from the store and he purchased most of our inventory.

We began working at eight oclock and we kept working through the night. I checked my watch, and the time
was 10:30 PM. What seemed to be a moment later, I checked my watch again. The time was now 1:45 AM. I
checked my watch one last time, and the time was 4:03 AM. We both worked through the night silently and
diligently.

Before I went to my bedroom to finally sleep, my father looked at me with a smile and said, You do not have
to go to school tomorrow. I looked at my father and said, Sure I do. I have a midterm to take tomorrow.
That day, I had only received two hours of sleep. I woke at 6:30 AM, and arrived at school at 7:30 AM. My
exam for AP Statistics began at 7:45 AM and ended at 11:30 AM. When I got home, I fell into bed, and did
not get up for a long period of time. The minute I got up, I checked my grade on the exam. I passed with an
eighty-eight.

That one day caused the most stress in my life and helped me realize that no matter where I go, or what I do, I
am going to have stress, whatever the situation may be. It has allowed me to prepare for anything. That mo-
ment has shown me that whatever adversity I may face, I will be able to conquer any and every challenge that
I face in the future.

Feminism Empowers
Ashley Cisneros

Feminism is the belief that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities. According to the Mer-
riam-Webster Dictionary, it is the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes and the organized activ-
ity on behalf of womens rights. The core of feminism is about equality. So anyone who believes in equality--
including men-- is a feminist. Feminism is more focused on women at the moment because we still live in a
patriarchal society where men have more power over women and women are discriminated against a lot more
than men are.

Feminists do not hate men. There are a lot of misconceptions that lead to feminisms negative connotation and
unpopularity. Some women are choosing not to identify as feminists, believing it is the domination of women
over men, its too aggressive, too anti- men, isolating, and even unattractive. Some people who already identi-
fy as feminist feel the need to apologize for being feminist. Being a feminist is not something to be ashamed
of; its something to be proud of.

Feminists believe in people having the freedom to do what they want, to make their own life choices without
the restraints of society. Feminism is also about giving people empowerment, letting people have power over
their lives and power over their bodies. Unfortunately, other countries dont all have the same privileges
America has. Schools here dont limit you because youre a girl and most peoples parents didnt love you any
less because you were a girl.

Women are a lot more than just a body that can deliver pleasure or deliver a baby. Women should be judged
on their actions rather than their appearances. Women should be involved in policies that will affect womens
lives and women should be paid the same amount as men.

Any time stereotypes, objectification or gender based oppression happens, its not always a feminist issue.
Men are also imprisoned by gender stereotypes. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive and both
men and women should feel free to be strong.

Its time we all perceive gender on a spectrum

instead of two sets of opposing ideals. If we stop
defining ourselves with what we're not and start
defining ourselves by who we are, we can be
much freer. Men should also take up this mantle
so their daughters, sisters, and mothers could be
free of prejudice, but also their sons could have
permission to be vulnerable and human too.

special event for the HeForShe campaign.

tember 2014

All Bodies Are Beautiful
Mya Yorke
Many people think that judging other peoples bodies is ok,
especially when it comes to women. Body image is a big
topic that, unfortunately, is ignored a lot of the time. As an
African-American woman, being thick and curvy feels like
the biggest fetish of 2017. Its as if somehow, people feel
that they have the right to pass judgement on your body.

If you are a person who has been told you are too skinny
or too thick, let me start off by saying you're beautiful in
your own way. Peoples opinions about who you are or
about your body are irrelevant. Even though those words
may hurt and get to you on the deepest level of irritation
and sadness, you should never let someone who isn't satis-
fied with themselves tell you about who you are.

You were made with a purpose that is unknown to others--

who aren't you. You can eat all the vegetables you want
and work out as hard as you ever have in your life, but if
your mind isnt healthy, then youll never feel right and as healthy as others appear to.

So when you are going anywhere-- and it doesn't matter where--wear that shirt you have always wanted to
pull out, or those jeans that people always seem to comment on. If you know who you are, you should never
let a lost soul influence your decisions in life, especially when it comes to your body.

Personally, I feel like I have heard so much judgement on my body from my peers. Aren't you black? Why
is your butt so small? Where are your thighs? And let me tell you, I have tried many ways to get thick,
but I soon came to a conclusion that I was made the way I was for a reason.

You should not be compelled to change yourself for anyone, especially to please or appeal attractive to the
eyes of others. Don't change yourself simply because others can't fulfill the standards that they set out for
themselves.

The way we think of our bodies is a problem. I completely un-

derstand why people have the damaged body mindsets they do;
social media is everywhere, giving these girls the guidelines
on how to be socially accepted, especially when it comes to
their body. From looking through magazines with girls who
have the perfect stomach and no signs of acne or any impuri-
ties to apps such as Instagram where girls promote flat tum-
my tea and waist trainers to get that unhealthy hourglass
figure, we are fooling ourselves. If you are manipulating what
you were given, is it really all natural?

We as a society need to understand that the ideal girl just

doesn't exist. The idea of her may, but achieving the look is
impossible. There will always be someone prettier out there that society will use and abuse to keep the Bar-
bies of America happy. Another person's beauty shouldnt be idolized by the mental absence of your own.

12
So when you are on social media watching Kylie Jenner work out with a waist trainer on, realize this: do you
really want to wear something that practically squeezes out every ounce of originality you were given? Why
look like someone else when you could be different? If we had a world full of people who looked the same and
did everything the same, how would anything be unique? We would strip away everything that sparks our crea-
tivity.

Our sole purpose is to create and make a difference in the world, but who can do that with Barbie and her plas-
tics breathing down your back every time you leave your home or go on social media? The pressure to be per-
fect is such a big issue in this day and age, but people need to realize that being perfect isn't even perfect. So if
being perfect isn't perfect...then what is?

Animals Have Feelings, Too!

Carolyn Martinez

The cruelty of putting an animal down is unnecessary. A dog's death should only be determined by their health.
If a dog--or any animal--is in pain and about to die, its a different situation. However, it is wrong to put inno-
cent animals down just because they don't have a home or anything like that. It's not fair to take an animal's
life. We humans have the choice to live even when homeless, so why cant animals? When people are home-
less, they hopefully can get into a homeless shelter. When animals get rescued, they get put down instead
of getting a new home.

Who gives us the right to take an

animal's life? In my opinion, this is
murder. Animals have many choic-
es; they can be put into zoos, or
people can help find them homes.
When people go straight to putting
them down, it's not right-- animals
should not be treated that way.

Many say that there's too many ani-

mals to be able to find them all
homes, but it's not about all of them
getting homes. At least putting in
the effort of finding them homes or
finding other alternatives is the
right thing to do. Its true that not
all animals can be put into homes,
but killing them all isn't right.

All shelters should be no kill shelters, which means they rescue all homeless dogs but don't kill them for no
reason. No-kill shelters cure animals, and only if they can't cure them, they either put them down or let them
die naturally. They might put animals down is if they can pass disease to other animals, they only do that to
save other animals from dying. That is the right way to deal with homeless animals. We need more no-kill
shelters, not more animals dying for no reason.

Clothing Trends of 2017
By: Ashley Cisneros

With spring already here, everyones wardrobe is changing. Here are 5 clothing trends that you might see some
people wearing this spring.

1. Embroidered Denim
The biggest trend from the 60s is back. Even though embroidered denim was popular in 2016 too, it car-
ried into 2017. High-end brands like Gucci have made embroidered jean jackets in the past, but they retail
for $5000 while stores like Urban Outfitters, H&M, and Forever 21 have made it more affordable to copy
the look.

2. Athluxury
Athluxury refers to luxurious athletic wear. Brands like Calvin Klein, Tory Burch, Tommy Hilfiger, and
Moschino have included this trend into their Spring 2017 line. Athluxury clothes still have a sporty vibe,
but in a subtle way, unlike athleisure. This trend is very versatile. For the most part, with a change of shoes
or the addition of a jacket, athluxury can be worn anywhere. And overall it's comfortable.

3. Wide Leg Pants and Trousers

The classic wide leg silhouette has continued into 2017, but in a larger variety, From trousers, jeans,
jumpsuits, and anything else. Trousers have become a staple part of the business style, as well as casual
and grunge. Trousers can be styled in many different ways for any occasion. They come in many different
styles, colors, and materials. They also could be worn casually or more dressed up.

4. Cargo Pants
Cargo pants have made a comeback. The casual bottom has become stylish once again. Cargos give off a
comfortable and versatile appearance. There are many different styles of cargo pants. Some can be baggier
than others, some are skinny fitting, some have rips in them, and they also come in different color ways.
Anyone can wear them.

5. Button-Up Shirts
The button-up shirts that are trending right now are different from the classic plain button-up shirt. They
have different patterns, some have stripes, some have different sleeves, some are cropped, and some are
styled differently. For example, Rihanna has been seen wearing her button-up shirts off the shoulder. But-
ton-up shirts are perfect for the people wanting a more tailored look.

Protection for Natural Hair? OMG!
Tahnele Everett

Being a natural can be kind of annoying sometimes.washday, making sure your hair is not dry, keeping up
with clipping your ends, and making sure youre staying away from heat. Being a natural has its challenges. It
is so easy to just go and sit in a chair to get your hair blown out rather than sitting down every night doing
bantu knots or any other protective style that you like.

Though theyre time-consuming, protective styles are the best for a girl being natural. They allow your hair to
grow healthily. Here are a few protective styles you can rock while getting your hair to grow to its fullest po-
tential.

1. Box Braids/ Senegalese Twist

Box braids and Senegalese twists are the go-to style for a lot of
naturals, or just girls in general. This allows your hair to be put
away and to not be manipulated everyday and, with the right
moisturization and taking care of the braids/twists, your hair
will have more length to it than before you put the braids in
your head. The key to having braids and twists is to NOT
WEAR YOUR BRAIDS for more than 2-3 months. This causes
breakage and it will not be good for your hair.

2. Perm Rods
Depending on your hair type, you choose the products that will be more
helpful for your hair, For me, when I do perm rods, I use the LOC meth-
od: liquid, oil, cream, and a gel of your choice. For your edges, there are
many different oils and curling creams and gels that you can use such as
cantu cream, curl enhancing smoothie, ecostyler gel, etc. Having perm
rods can last for up to a week or two, depending on how you put your
hair away when it is time for you to sleep.

3. Bantu Knots
Depending how big you do your parts to do your bantu knots determines
just how big/small your curls will be. Once again you want to use the
LOC method (liquid, oil, and cream). Next, you want to comb through
your section before you start your knot, or it will be frizzy
when it's time to take the knots down.

Using protective styles help your hair grow a lot. If you

leave in a style for a week and just do it on a Sunday and
check it every week, when you take your hair out you will
see the growth in your hair. As long as you keep your hair
tied up, don't manipulate your hair, and keep your hair away
from heat, your hair will be healthy.

Throwback: Teacher Proms
Natalya Marquez
As our prom night is approaching, some of our
teachers may be reminiscing about their own special
nights. I asked a few teachers about the details of
their prom.

Ms Grandfield looks back at her prom very fondly.

Her senior prom was one of the many proms she had
been to in her high school years. She had her dress,
a long off the shoulder purple dress, handmade to
look very 1980s...even though it was 1991.

We went in a limo with all our friends, two of which im still friends with today. KG had a great time at her
prom. My parents were very strict, so it was a big deal. After prom she spent the rest of the night watching
movies and the next day they had a little cookout. Looking back at her prom, KG is left with this thought: I
think every kid should have an opportunity to go to prom. Money shouldnt be an issue

Mr. Ciarcia had a very different outlook on his prom night, because he actually chose to not attend his senior
prom. Me and a group of guys decided to have our own gathering. We went to 3 states in one night. Mr.
Ciarcia was very happy with his choice of not going to prom, smiling the entire time he was asked about the
night. He and his friends wrapped up the night meeting on the beach.Everyone spent hundreds of dollars [on
the prom] and tears because they all broke up that night, but we had a great time because we were together.

Ms. Drury doesnt remember much of her prom night. A kid she had grown up with asked her to prom. He
said hed get a limo, but he wasnt able to, so we went in his pickup truck he did yard work in. She genuinely
doesn't recall much on the night, so it is unclear if she enjoyed the night. I didnt care about prom. I said yes
to be nice and out of fear that Id regret not going.

Overall, no matter what youre doing the night of prom, make it something to remember. This year, on May
11th, everyone will hopefully be having one of the best nights of their lives..

Preparing for Senior Year

Keyavonie Lawrence

As you may know, we juniors, the class of 2018, are about to become seniors soon. I know junior year might
have been tough, but after this, all we have to deal with is senior year.

We all have a problem with studying, so in order to succeed in senior year, we have to try to get the best grades
possible, especially since colleges will be looking at us in order to make a choice. Some students might not go
to college because they arent interested in being in school for another four years, but at least do well in case
you decide to change your mind.

Rumors are told that when you reach senior year you will catch senioritis, which can make you lose motiva-
tion for school, ruin your senior year, and make you less prepared for college.

Just because you're a senior doesn't mean you can ignore assignments you think are less important, because
during senior year you're going to want all the extra points you can get so you can be on top of things. Good
luck!

Dear Rising Seniors
Advice from the Senior Class
Heaven Bradley

In order to achieve a goal, have to believe you can chase them regardless of the tough paths you may face!
Lorraine Vazquez

DON'T MESS UP !!!

Hannan Khan

Do NOT slack off! Stay on top of everything ! *make lots of money too Good Luck =)
Jazmine Bethea

Do your work when its assigned. Don't look up to seniors who are in the hallways you will see them next
year.
Gabby Banks

Realize that people come and go. Just stay true to yourself and everything will fall into place. After the 4
years of high school, the people you tried to impress or fit in with wont matter.
Mya Yorke

Do not look up to seniors that you constantly see in the hallway, they are not actually seniors you will see
them next year.
Miles Dylan Wallace

Stay focused , many people get senioritis too early and just stop caring about school .. with it being your
last year, keep your head up high because youre gonna be out sooner than you think.
Crystal Graham

My advice to all rising seniors would be to stay focused, don't slack off, and don't procrastinate. Senior year is
challenging but push through. Colleges are especially watching your academic performance and will monitor
you as you are nearing the end of your high school journey. Get all your college applications in on time, the
sooner the better, and be mindful of your application deadlines. Also, don't be afraid to reach out to colleges.
They're more than willing to help you and address any of your questions and/or concerns. Stay in touch with
your guidance counselor and maintain your grades!
Lynesha Patterson

Make sure you do ALL your work! Stay after if you need extra help, and dont be late. Make sure you apply
to all the colleges you want to go to. Have fun and make sure you know whos there for you. Make new
friends and keep up with your grades.
Azia Morris

My advice to rising seniors is to not waste your time your senior year. Take it seriously, because if you
dont itll hurt you in the long run. Be focused, have time management, study, do your homework...just do
good! Ask for help-- dont be scared. Keep your grades good, and just focus, because its your senior year!
Have fun, make the best of it!
Aliana Valcourt

20
Uhh, expect to gain new friends and loose your old ones because it will happen. Participate in the senior ac-
tivities like yearbook committee, prom committee, etc., and communicate with your counselors, they're the
ones who would really help you especially regarding colleges and stuff.
Teearra Harris

Don't feed into senioritis. Stay focused. Be on top of your deadlines.

Thomas Oliver

I would tell kids to not take [senior year] as a joke. Study hard for the SATs, because your SAT scores are
your tickets into college, and make sure you stay on top of all of your teachers. And make sure your senior
class has meetings every so often so you don't have deadlines and mandatory activities in order to graduate
thrown in your faces at the last minute, and make sure you class supervisors are on top of everything also.
Donae Bess-Clarke

Prepare for your capstone and make sure you have an idea
CJ Foskey

Don't fall off task.

Janaiah Powell

Advice I would give upcoming seniors is just because it's senior year, do not slack! Don't get lazy, there is
still work to be done, and stay focused. Also I would say when it comes to college, even if you think you won't
get in, STILL APPLY.
Tanyce Rivers

Get everything thing done EARLY/ON TIME . Pick what colleges you want to go to now or soon, and do
your college essay and the Common App on time . Take your grades very seriously, because your GPA isn't a
joke.
Wytika Walker

Only thing I can say is your senior year is going to fly by, so enjoy it, but make sure you stay focused. Once
senior year comes, youre not going to feel like doing NOTHING, you're just going to be ready to graduate
When you do senior capstone, you should try to do it at the beginning of the year instead of the end, cause it's
more stressful during this time with prom and class dues and all of that.
Giana Crnkovic

Stay on top of your work. Every year your friendships/little circle will decrease-- you will not have the same
friends you came in with. Plan your capstone in advance!
Nya Teague

Looking to the Future
Tahnele Everett

The time is coming-- the time our parents told always tells us
about. Soon you're going to have to grow up. Of course, we
ignored them when they said that, because at the time, we weren't
thinking about growing up. But in the blink of an eye, we defi-
nitely are growing up, and it's all happening pretty quickly. I
thought high school would've taken forever, just as middle school
did, but I thought wrong. High school has gone by really quickly,
and before you know it, it will have gone by quickly for you too.

We asked our peers: Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?

I see myself in medical school, ready for success, --Miles Dylan Wallace, Grade 12

Medical school, say Taijzeeaunna Kelley Anderson and Tiana Bell, Grade 12

Going to medical school...and drowning in student loans, --Mya Yorke, Grade 12

I see myself being successful in my career, --Jazmyne Scott, Grade 12

Graduating from college and jumping into my profession in a hospital setting is the goal, --Lynesha Patter-
son, Grade 12

Getting my masters degree, --Nyzha Edwards, Grade 12

I see myself in college, my own apartment and a car, living life. --Janiah Jowers, Grade 10

Working behind the scenes of movies and radio, possibly. --Anita Wlazlo, Grade 11

As a mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially stable doctor (OBGYN). --Jana Hassan, Grade 11

I see myself in my cubicle, living my social worker life. Driving a Porsche --Patricia Cooke, Grade 11

I hope I am all-around happy and living life to the fullest. My goal is to be graduating med school to be an
obstetrician. --Anastasia Echevarria, Grade 11

Hopefully not a dropout from college, possibly graduated from med school (plz god plz). --Dyuthi Mat-
thews, Grade 11

Living wealthy, the biggest name in America, --Tamar Williams, Grade 11

Working in an architecture firm making money, --Andrew Harris, Grade 11

I see myself going to college, actually finishing, and working somewhere big in the city. --Taniya Gray,
Grade 11

Who knows where any of us will be in 5-10 years or what we will be doing? It seems pretty easy to say what
we want to do in 5-10 years, but sure enough, there will be a lot of obstacles in the way of getting to where you
want to be. The best thing you can do is try your best and to never give up.

Opinion: Students Must Get Involved
Tea Gray

As many people may know, the Lock-In that was supposed to happen on March 31, 2017 at Career was can-
celled. The reason for that was because there weren't enough tickets that were sold. When I first heard the
news about the Lock-In being cancelled, I was upset-- I felt like the Lock-In would have been a great oppor-
tunity for the junior class to earn money and have fun.

The Lock-In was scheduled to be on March 31, 2017. It was to be a 4-hour event where once you leave it, you
wouldnt be able to come back in. Students were supposed to have fun activities such as a dance hall in the
cafe, video games in the library, basketball in the gym, and movies in the auditorium. The ticket only cost
$10, but it included pizza, snacks, and a drink. In my opinion, the price was a little bit high but other than that;
the Lock-In was a really good deal.

The Lock-In was sadly canceled because of two reasons. One, there werent enough people who brought tick-
ets. Two, Cross High School had an event the same day as the Lock-In, and a lot of Career Students went
there instead.

The cancellation of the Lock-In was a wake-up call. All the students at Career High School need to be more
involved with school activities. When your class plans an event for your class to make money, it would make
sense to participate. I just dont understand why people dont get involved in activities when its ultimately
going to help you out. I know for sure everyone at Career wants their senior year to be amazing, and most
people dont want to pay out of pocket for a lot of things. Its simple: getting involved with your class will
result in more money for your class.

I find it funny when people complain about how their class doesn't have much money, and they blame it on
their class president. If you have a good class president who is trying their hardest to raise money, then you
cant possibly blame them. If you know that your class president wants to do something, but they need your
whole class to get involved, then get involved. If you dont get involved, then you are missing out on an op-
portunity to raise money and make your senior year the best.

The events arent even boring; the class presidents try to make it interesting. What happens is that so few peo-
ple actually get involved and others think the event is boring because only a small number of people are actu-
ally being vocal about participating. You wont know if the event is boring if you dont go. If we dont
change that, then no class will ever make any money.

Im not demanding students to

get involved in every-
thing, because I understand that
you wont be able to do every
single thing that your class does.
Im simply just asking you to
please try to get involved in
events. I promise you-- the more
involved people are, the more
money your class will make, and
who wouldnt want more money
to make their senior year incredi-
ble? Who knows-- you might
even enjoy yourself.

Opinion: Full SAT Day is a Struggle
Heidy Ayala

Shouldn't Juniors be allowed to leave after they take the SATs? After 3 long hours in one room, why shouldn't
we be able to leave? Every junior gets stressed and dreads this day, the day that might determine whether you
get into the college of your dreams. Every Junior will go through this experience, so therefore why not give us
some relief to look forward to? After testing, why shouldn't we be able to leave and have the rest of the day to
relax after the biggest test of our lives?

The SATs have become one of the biggest milestones we will have to conquer. It can be a scary mountain to
get over. Although there is never a way to predict exactly what will be on the test, we have to try to do our best
in every section. Everyone has an area theyre most confident in, but that still doesn't guarantee that youll do
well. The most common thing that we are told is to try our best, but it's hard to try or best when you don't
even understand yourself what the test asks you sometimes.

The first ever mandatory SAT for Juniors was in 1946 with Stanley Kaplan. Juniors all over the United States
are prepared for the SAT, although no one ever truly does know exactly what will be on it. Once the SAT is
brought up, every Junior who wants to go to college feels a pressure to do their best and make sure that they are
as prepared as they can possibly be. This is probably the most stressful month of preparation for the big day.

Although everyone goes through this process differently, we all know what it's like to feel an overwhelming
amount of stress, knowing that this test will determine where you end up, whether it's your reach school or your
safety school. No one is ever immediately sure how well they did on the SAT, but that shouldn't discourage us.
One thing Ive learned is that you have to be patient and trust the knowledge that you already have. Yes, it's
hard because at any point you may second-guess yourself, but just remember that when we truly learn some-
thing, it's in our brains forever and it becomes instinct.

Going through this stressful and important process is exactly why Juniors should be allowed to be able to leave
early or be able to leave when they finish their SAT. With 3 hours of stressful testing, we deserve a break to
relax and enjoy the rest of the day.

Opinion: Marijuana Should Be Legalized

Erik Sarango

There are many reasons as to why I believe that marijuana should be legalized. For example, there have been
many times when marijuana has been used for various medical issues on different occasions that ended up be-
ing a better option than prescription drugs and any other remedies.

Since youve heard that marijuana can help with various medical issues, Ill give you some examples. First off,
there have been many people effected in a positive way by marijuana, such as people suffering from serious
illnesses, epilepsy, seizures, and nausea. Marijuana has also helped people who couldn't eat anything by giving
them the desire to eat and drink which helped keep them from being malnourished. People with serious illness-
es such as cancer or PTSD, and people in chronic pain from things like losing a limb and having to go through
physical therapy can get relief from marijuana.

Connecticut allows people to use marijuana for medicinal purposes with a prescription. In Connecticut, mariju-
ana has been decriminalized, but it is still illegal. Decriminalized means to cease legislation to treat
(something) as illegal. It does not mean that its legal to have marijuana. In Connecticut, you will get fined for
having less than half an ounce if its your first offense, but you will get arrested if you are selling it.

Opinion: Leveled Classes Separate,
Segregate Students
Tahnele Everett

Growing up as a kid there

was always a class to de-
scribe who you were. You
were classified as either a
smart kid or normal
kid, or youre special.
There was never a class for
everyone, regardless of all
of the labels. If you were
put into a lower math class
you would be labeled and
looked at as dumb, and if
you were put into an ad-
vanced class you'd be called
a good kid, one of the
smartest kids in school.

Everyone always believes

that just because you are in
an honors or AP class
you're the smartest, which
in fact is not true-- not at all. In fact, for the first time this year, I was put into both an AP class as well as an
honors class, which I never would have thought in a million years would've been possible. However, I can tell
you from experience not to let the title honors or AP fool you. The majority of AP and honors classes are
not what they seem; the same things go on, not to mention were all teens, and whether some of us want to ad-
mit it or not, most of us are still very immature.

Were all students. There should not be a label in front of the class name. Here at Career High School, the hon-
ors, AP, and college-leveled classes are all just split based on behavior rather than academics. Honors classes
are basically for the kids who get their work done and act like they are the angels of the school, while college
leveled classes are for the kids who are seen as bad. People believe that if you are in a college level class
that you are stupid, which is not true. I'm not a bad student, and my whole schedule apart from two classes are
all college classes. Although college-leveled classes are rather challenging to get work done because of more
distractions, the kids are not bad; they simply do not only want to work, work, work 24/7 and stress over aca-
demic work that has to be done.

I can also say that being in a college-leveled class is fun and interesting. School shouldn't always be about
working all the time; sometimes it's about learning new things from each other. I can also say from the per-
spective of being in both honors and college classes is that honors class teacher seem to have high expectations
of each of their students to succeed, but when you walk into a college class, the teachers don't have the same
energy towards the college level kids. Often, they don't hold high expectations from their students. Instead,
they give seating charts to the students, hand them a syllabus, and expect for the students to sit silently in the
class, not wanting to hear a word from students or they take points off.

25
Being in both college and honors classes has showed me that really, we all get the same work, The honors
kids, though, are expected to have their work done earlier than the college level classes which, in my opinion,
is not fair. This just goes back to the point that teachers have higher expectations for honors classes and lower
expectations for college level classes.

I also believe that honors and college level classes are often split up based on where you live. In the honors
and AP classes, you have a majority of the students from out of district (Milford, Hamden, West Haven)
while college-level classes are mainly New Haven kids. Is that fair? What does that say about who were edu-
cating?

In eighth grade, I was stereotyped by a teacher because I was a goofy girl in class. At an honors breakfast, an
administrator took me by my hand and led me out to the hallway telling me these exact words: I never
thought you could get honors. Something about this made me feel bad, even though I had just gotten an
award for my academics. I didn't know exactly how to feel. Of course, the number one feeling I had was hurt.
When I went home and told my aunt what the administrator said to me she was as shocked as I was. To this
day it makes me laugh that the administrator even thought such a thing about me or even other students who
were not in the labeled SMART classes.

Today, I am still taking some college-level classes and I maintain honors-- and no, it is not because college
level classes are easier, because, once again, we get the same work. I maintain my honors simply because I
work hard and get what I earned in the end. Being a college-level kid has made me open my eyes a bit more. It
taught me that honors or AP is for the students who want to be with people just like them. I am all three;
an AP, honors, and college kid.

If you were to ask me my honest opinion of which class I like the best, I would most definitely chose my col-
lege level class; I like to see the look on the teacher's face when the class actually does better than an honors
level or AP class. Most importantly, I like that in a college-leveled class, we are told the truth. The teachers are
not sugarcoating anything for us; it's either do this and get that, or just don't do it at all, and get your zero. Its
more like real life. College level kids are also real; they don't pretend to like each other. If they don't like each
other, they let each other know.

At the end of the day, though, students are students. There should be no such things as a labeled class. All kid
should be together and learn together, working on the same things. The leveled classes at Career result in sepa-
ration and segregation. AP, honors, and college students are so segregated that you do not often see a regular
college-level kid dating an AP kid. You do not see students from these three levels really being close friends;
instead, the college-leveled kids stick with each other, and honors and AP kids do the same exact thing. Is this
really how the world works? Is this really the best way for us to learn from each other?

If history has shown us anything, its that separate but equal is no way to run a school.

Mississippi State Bring the Huskies Down

Charles Sakouvogui

Mississippi State Women's

Basketball pulled out an amaz-
ing performance on March 31
to stop the Huskies 111- game
winning streak. 55 Mississip-
pi guard Morgan William
killed the Huskies hope of
claiming a fifth consecutive
NCAA Women's Basketball
championship.

No. 2 seed Mississippi took

their revenge of UConn after a
humiliating 60 point difference
defeat in last year's Elite Eight
final.

Though many Career students

The UConn womens basketball team at their 2016 championship win wanted UConn to win, what an
outstanding game. This was great for women's
basketball. So many people automatically as-
sumed it would be UConn. Mississippi State played an outstanding game. Congratulations on this incredible
win.

All good things come to an end. Mississippi played their hearts out, hustled non-stop, and gave it their all--and
it showed. UConn got caught with a punch to the jaw in the first minutes of the game and never fully recov-
ered. Props to UConn's kids for coming back from so far down-- they had a shot to win it all in the end, but fell
short.

That said, Gabby Williams put in an effort during the game that I hate to think is going to go unnoticed in the
history books. Morgan William's outstanding effort will be long remembered, but had UConn won and gone
on to with the championship, Gabby's would have been considered one of the all time great performances. She
left it all out there on the floor and she deserves to be recognized for it. Whether it was making steals, diving
for balls going out of bounds, defending a player 8" taller than she is in the post, hitting crucial shots and
blocking one potential game winner as well as other crucial shots, she did it all.

So while I am sad for UConn, I do want everyone to not forget the effort and absolute dedication we saw on
that floor that night. Without Gabby Williams, UConn wouldn't have even been in that game. And even on the
last play, she was maybe two inches away from forcing another overtime and it took a near miracle shot by
Morgan Williams to beat her.

When Theyre Successful, Im Successful.
An Exclusive Interview With Career Boys Basketball Head Coach Larry Kelley
By Charles Sakouvogui

The 2016-2017 high school basketball

season is over. Hill Regional Career
High School boys basketball had a
good season overall. According to
Coach Kelley, this is due to the dedica-
tion and hard work of the young play-
ers during the off-season who then
gave their individual skills and talents
to the benefit of the entire team in order
to advance in the State Championship
and the SCC tournament, an accom-
plishment they did not achieve the pre-
vious year. Kelley also expressed his
pride to his players after the senior
night in front of their parent as a moti-
vation to keep on fighting. In this inter-
view, The Panther Press learned more
about how Kelley worked with the
team during this exciting season.

Charles S.: Many people expected

more from your team this year, others
did not think you would do as well as
you did. How was the basketball sea-
son, from your point of view as the
coach?

Coach Kelley : For me being the coach

(Photo/Peter Hvizdak) at Career, I think we were really suc-
cessful. I think the kids learned a lot, they grew up over
the off season. They worked on themselves during the off season individually, mentally, physically and spirit-
ually. They became much stronger players, where last year, once we got behind in a game, we would just suc-
cumb to that lead we didnt have and the others had. This year has been really rewarding to me. I talked to the
kids after the senior night in front of their parents. I told the kids how proud of them I was, and I wanted to
tell them before the season ended so that could translate into a little bit more effort and believing in them-
selves.

Charles S. : What was your best moment during the season?

Coach Kelley: I think we had two, three best moments during the season. My best moment was in the begin-
ning of the season, during the second game of the season when we lost to Hamden in the first game by 20
points and we came back and we had the game almost won at Hillhouse. Right there, [the players] began to
believe in themselves and the team came together. That probably was the best part.

29
And the second best moment was when these kids went up against the number two team in the state at their
school and really fought, and I think they should have won in overtime. That was really rewarding to them.
There were a lot of good moments; I don't think one outweighs the other one, but you know, it's about the
kids. When theyre successful, Im successful

Charles S. : Who you think was the player that stood out the most?

Coach Kelley: It was the team. I think you go through lows and highs during the season. You never know
when your high is gonna be, you never know when your low is gonna be. You always wish to stay on highs. I
have been on those with some of my team, but these guys out here, whenever there were down, they came
back, they fought.

Charles S. : What do you expect for next season?

Coach Kelley: I expect to be better than we were this season. I graduated five seniors, but we still have a
young nucleus of kids that's coming back. I look forward to go to them. I think we can do better than we did
last year. Hopefully new faces come in; not all freshmen. We can get some transfers in hopefully. I think we
are going to be fine. We are on our way back to where we used to be--always on the top!

What Happened to The Netherlands?!

John Cardenas

The Netherlands national

team used to be a very dan-
gerous and feared interna-
tional team to face, but
ever since the 2014 FIFA
World Cup, they have not
been the same. They failed
to qualify for the 2016 Eu-
ro Cup in France. The team
hasnt really made any
changes to the squad list
except for one player who
retired named Dirk Kuyt.
True, he was a great player,
but one player should not
be the end of a national
team.

The team has a bunch of quality players, but cant seem to be able to perform well. Memphis Depay, Arjen
Robben, and Wesley Sneijder still play for the team. They were members of the team when Netherlands
came in 3rd place. In the past, the Netherlands had people believe that they could win the World Cup as they
humiliated Spain 5-1. Even before that, in the 2010 World Cup, they came in 2nd, only losing in the finals to
Spain.

This time around, the Netherlands have been really struggling to even qualify to the 2018 World Cup, being
4th in their group qualifiers out of 6.

Messi Stuns in El Clsico
John Cardenas
The El Clsico that took place on April 23,
2017 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu Real
Madrid's home stadium was by far one of the
greatest El Clsico games in a long time. The
games outcome affected who goes in first
place in the league La Liga Santander. From the
minute the first whistle blew to the ending game
whistle, the game was intense.

Both teams went full force to win all 3 points.

For the first half, it seemed as if Real Madrid
were going to dominate the whole game as FC
Barcelona had only 1 shot on target the whole
half. Real Madrid were pressing Barcelona in
their goal, but Marc Andre Ter Stegen, the FC
Barcelona goalkeeper, saved Barca. He had the game of his life, recording 12 saves and only let in 1 goal.

For Real Madrid, the man who you would least expect to score, Casemiro, scored the first goal of the game.
Soon after that, Barcelona tied it back up to make it 1-1 on the thirty-third minute due to Messi and his
magical touch. Messi simply had 2 touches to get past Carvajal and left him looking foolish to shoot the
ball into the bottom right corner. This left Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas no chance to block the
goal.

For Barcelona, they are appreciating Marc Andre Ter Stegen for pulling 2 world-class saves to deny Mo-
dric and Ronaldo. The second half was more intense, due to both teams wanting to win badly to get first
place in the league. In the seventy-third minute, Ivan Rakitic scored an amazing goal, faking a shot to cre-
ate space between him and Kroos and shot a bullet into the left side of the goal. This left Navas with again
no chance to save the goal.

In the seventy-seventh minute, it seemed like Real Madrid Captain Sergio Ramos lost his cool and had a
really reckless foul against Lionel Messi, having both cleats up. This ended with him getting a red card and
angry talks with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique. Real Madrid Manager Zinedine Zidane subbed in James
Rodriguez to boost the attack for Real Madrid as they did not want to lose and let Barcelona take first
place.

After being subbed on the eighty-second minute, it only took 3 minutes for James Rodriguez to score and
have the game back to being tied at 2-2. As for the rest of the game, it looked like both teams couldnt
seem to score anymore, as both goalkeepers were working their hardest not to let their team lose.

But eventually, Real Madrid committed a mistake. Most of the team pressed Barca in their own half, leav-
ing just 2 defenders in the back as Barcelona took advantage and started a counterattack. With five attack-
ers vs two defenders, Real Madrid were rushing to get back to prevent Barcelona from scoring. Five v four,
Andre Gomes, a midfielder for Barcelona, passed it to left back Jordi Alba, who passed it down the middle,
where it met Messi, who blasted the ball into the left hand corner with just 30 seconds left. Messi celebrat-
ed by showing the Real Madrid fans his jersey to show them who they should fear.

As the game ended, the stats were amazing as Messi proved to everyone why he is considered the greatest
of all time. As for the keepers, they both played amazing games, with Ter Stegen making 12 saves and
Keylor Navas making 6 saves.

Wrapped Up in School
by Kyra Catubig

Kyra held her art gallery for her Capstone project on Thursday, April 27th. The paintings
featured were visual representations of students opinions of the physical condition of the school. Kyra passed
out surveys to gain an understanding of the various opinions of our school and to give her artistic input on
those opinions. The message behind this particular painting is that our school is very safe and well protected
when it comes to them fooling around. The question Kyra asked which inspired this painting was, How
well does the school practice cleanliness? I think this painting clearly states the answer to that question. The
anonymous writer of the survey says The bathrooms are a mess. Theres wrappers on the floor. Ive seen con-
doms before. Its not that clean. And with that answer and many more, Kyra created amazing things.

Truth
Aleysia Watson

Laying still is how you see me

But the truth is really beneath me ..
Loud is what you don't hear
Silent cries and even silent cheers
The truth starts with a T .. to tell a terrifying statement
That defines me for me, like how the leaves define the branches on every single tree
Now to the R, resembling the symbols of reality that connect to our damaged lives
Encouraging you to put down that weapon that might just take your life..
The U stands for the ugliness of the truth
Many may not believe it but they should very well conceive it
Now to our other beloved T .. the one that strikes a pose
like the way my head stands still towards the crowd
so dull and motionless when the bare truth comes out..
Last but not least .. all hail the H
No miscommunication should ever takes its place
Silent but true, never let the crowd underestimate you ..
You're worth more than the tears that roll down in disgrace
You're worth more than struggle that's shown on your face
The ruthless crowd may turn you down but don't frown ..
just lift yourself back up
And turn around
