Vintage Sand Pails

The throwback beach toys carry
summertime nostalgia in spades
THEIR PLASTIC COUNTERPARTS have sent them the way
of wool bathing suits and boardwalk nickelodeons, but
metal beach pails still win as sandy, sentimental favorites.
The rst ones popped up on American shores in the mid-
1800s, crafted from small sheets of imported tinplate. It
wasnt until 30 years later, when sun-seekers began hopping
trains for quick trips to the beach, that the little pails
skyrocketed in popularity. Domestic tinplate manufacturing
began to ourish in the 1890s, which also helped grow the
beloved beach toy in both size and availability. As technology
advanced, the pails designs became more sophisticated.
For instance, early versions were hand-painted in just one or
two colors and lacquered for a glossy nish, but chromo-
lithography (a multicolor printing process) enabled toy-
makers to crank out pails with detailed illustrations in
bright, saturated hues. You can still scoop them up on sites
such as Beach Grass (beachgrassshop.com), eBay, Etsy,
and Ruby Lane at prices ranging from $30 to $150; rarer
designs sell for as much as $1,000.

Lighthearted illustrations of
children playing on the beach
were a perennial favorite
theme for mid-1900s pails like
these, as were pop culture
and adventure scenes.

SUNNY DAY GETAWAY

3 Easy, Breezy Ways to Soak Up

Summer In Virginia Beach
With the longer days of summer in full bloom, so is the desire for soaking up
the sun, and in Virginia Beach, the opportunities for a sunny day well spent are
countless. Across this evolving coastal city, visitors are heading outdoors to ride
that wave, reel in that big catch or leisurely lounge on one of the areas beaches,
while taking turns cooling off in the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay. But
it doesnt all require time at the beach. In true Virginia Beach style, summers
ultimate potential can be enjoyed well beyond the sun and sand, too, thanks to
colorful local shops, a vibrant downtown district, richly historic sites and miles and
miles of beautifully lush hiking and running trails and waterways. Here are three
easy, breezy ways to soak up as much of the sun as this summer will allow.

left the original whitewashed woodwork unpainted,
turning it into a rustic foil for a more modern, vibrant
seating area. The paneling is so typical of cottages in
the neighborhood, so keeping it exposed in this one
room was a fun nod to the houses history, James says.
Along with adding bright citron seating, she framed a
pair of vintage Brunschwig & Fils fabric scraps and hung
them above painted white consoles. The rattan chairs,
acrylic lamp, and atweave rug came with the house.

S
martphones and video games dont
stand much of a chance in the summer
communities along Lake Michigan. Its
as if the immense inland sea sucks the
power right out of them, tucks it into the lakebed,
and doesnt return it until the cars are packed up
again, and everyone is taking a last backward
glance at the water (and not a minute before).
Its like taking a step back in time, says Emilie
Delehanty, whose parents and grandparents
grew up summering on these shores. There were
considerably fewer beeps and ashing screens
to leave behind in decades past, but this turn-
of-the-century community near Michigans
Upper Peninsula is still an old-school escape
today: Children ride bikes everywhere, neighbors
roast hot dogs together at night, and everyone
swims until the sun goes down. Wanting that
free-roaming experience for her children, Emilie
and her husband, Matt, rented houses in the
area until they found a turnkey 1898 cottage in
the old neighborhood. With a stash of wicker
furniture, feminine oral wallpaper, and sturdy
plank walls, the summer home was all heart. So
they bought it.
I felt so lucky that the house came furnished,
because it had the retro look I was used to, says
Emilie. I knew it needed updating, but I didnt
want to lose that feeling. How to pull that off was
a no-brainer: She asked her longtime friend,
designer Chenault James (who also spends sum-
mers in the idyllic enclave) for help. This is one
of the most special places in the world to me,
so the look comes second nature: Its vintage,
casual, and energetic, says James. I always say,
If it reminds me of my grandmother, in a good
way, then it belongs. Heres how she and the
Delehantys, along with architect Dan Gorman,
revived the retro spirit of the old Michigan
summerhouse and turned its vintage furnishings
into modern-day gems.

cache of vintage wicker to use as hardy, super practical
club seating in the sunroom. Because of the amount
of natural light the space gets, and because it functions
as an overow spot for the kids games area, I wanted
everything to be very durable, says the designer, who
paired the chairs with a canvas twill slipcovered sofa
and parrot green draperies made from fade-resistant
Perennials fabric trimmed in yellow Greek key tape.

James decided to amplify it by painting the wide-plank oors

were formerly in the guest bedroom,
but James loved how they looked with
the original green vine wallpaper. Chic
blue accent pillows and new beveled
table lamps put a fresh, handsome
spin on the old-school color pairing.
I also added green trim to the lamp

old-fashioned summerhouse staples (the
coverlet and peacock wicker mirror) with
21st-century bedrooms. Theres no reason
to play it too safe, says James, who advises
clients to take more risks in decorating
vacation homes. You spend most of the
time outside, so go for it!

Maines Route 1 as it pushes northeast past
Portland, a urry of signs crops up every
few minutes or so, pointing off to the right.
The names call out to me like voices from
a New England literary fantasy. Harpswell,
Boothbay, Pemaquid: These could be ship-
mates in Moby-Dick. Phippsburg and
Georgetown: They sound straight from the
landscapes of Hawthorne.
Those signs point, one at a time, to a
tight cluster of ve peninsulas. The geo-
logical quintetjutting into Casco Bay like
the prows of boatsis hardly an anomaly
in this part of New England. Maine makes
a habit of dangling peninsulas all the way
up past Bar Harbor, almost into Canada.
But this is a particularly dense bundle of
promise. With no bridges linking them,
each peninsula is a journey unto itself. And
because so many travelers just stream
along the coastal highway with destina-
tions set and timetables established, this
rich world is easily overlooked.
But not, happily, by me.

Noah (now 20), here, where he roamed barefoot and

and watched them grow into mature sources of shade and
fruit, Sanford says. Weve motored our dinghy across the
river toward Cumberland Island and hand-picked oyster
shells for the replaces, laid them in the drive to bleach in
the summer sun. Everything around us has helped shape
this house, and the house and the land have shaped us.
It all started in the mid-1990s. Sanford and Noahs
father (now deceased) were sailing along the coast look-
ing for deep water, and we sailed into Tiger Point Marina
across the street, she says. I walked up the hill and saw
it. Its hard to describe, but this area, this house, it felt so
familiar to me. It immediately felt like home.
It was boarded up, and had been for years. But she
