What resources will you need? Planets, Sun, and moons print-outs

*Have a picture/visual of Solar System on board


Ask students if they know what it is
Introduction
Ask students if they know the names of the planets
(1 mins) Ask students if they know which planet Earth is
Tell the students its okay they dont know the answer
*Get students to line up to receive a print-out of the Sun, a planet, or a moon
*Each print-out will have 1-3 facts about the planet, Sun, or moon that they receive
Get the students to arrange themselves in a live model of the Solar System
Have each student come to the front of the class one-by-one and read the facts that they have
on the back of their print-out
The Sun
The Sun is a star
It is made of hydrogen and helium
The Sun is 5500C on its surface
Mercury (0 moons)
Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun
Body (45 mins) It takes 88 days to travel around the Sun
Venus (0 moons)
Venus is a little bit smaller than Earth
It is covered in thick clouds
Venus can get to 480C
Earth (1 moon)
Earth is the only place with life that we know of
It is the only planet with liquid water on its surface
Moon
Our Moon has no weather
It makes the waves in the oceans
Mars (2 moons)
Mars has a lot of rust on it
Mars has the biggest volcano in the Solar System. It is called Olympus Mons
Phobos
Phobos orbits Mars 3 times a day
Deimos
When meteorites crash into Deimos, all the dust goes into space. This is because Deimos has
almost no gravity
Jupiter (67 moons)
Jupiter is the biggest planet
Jupiter is made entirely of gas
Ganymede
Ganymede is the biggest moon in the Solar System
Io
Io is the most volcanic moon in the Solar System
Callisto
Callisto has more craters than anything else in the Solar System

Europa is covered in ice

Saturn has rings made of ice
It is light enough to float in a bathtub

Titan has weather. It rains methane there

Enceladus has an ocean under its surface

Mimus has a giant crater called Herschel

Titania is Uranus biggest moon
It has earthquakes
Miranda
Miranda is the inside-out moon

Neptune is the stormiest planet
It gets 2000-km/h winds

Tritan has ice volcanoes
Thalassa
Talassa is shaped like a frisbee
Pluto (1 twin planet)
Pluto is smaller than our Moon
Pluto is called a dwarf planet
Charon
Charon is 3 times smaller than Pluto
Charon and Pluto orbit each other
