Betweenl9 and l5 Ma the depositwas subjectedto at leasttwo leaching,oxidisinglnd enrichnrertevenls.
The firstgenerated a thick,stronglyenrichedblanketwith gradesaveraging2 to l7n Cu. which waslocussed
by the late and waning stagequartz sericiticalterationthat producednou-reactiverocks with abuntlant
pyrite. This blanketextended,althoughrelativelythinly developed,beyo|ldthe quirfz-sericiticzone,into
more teactivesectorsto the eastand north with lesserpyrite and predonrinantly early polassicaltera(iou.
Subsequent tectonicuplift loweredthe meteoricwater table,oxidising the enrchedblanketto produce
hematiticleachedremnantsin the quartz-sericite rich lithologies,and high graclecoppersulphatesn the
potassicalteration of the near surface in the easternand nothem sectors,which were th target of early
miningactivilyat Chuquicamata. Lowgraderemnantsofthisoxidecapmaystill beobserverjin thenorthem
