barrento weakmineralisation stagesandthe latermainpoly-episodic quartz-sericitic (phyllic)event.Durirrg
this period,which extendedfrom 33.4to 3 | . I Ma, the depositwas subjectedto iIllorlunttectonicstresses.
lntensemain and late stagequartzsericilicalterationwas imposedon a north-southelorrgitted zone in the
westempart of the depositat 3l.l Ma. This phaseobliteraledthe fonner mineralogyand gerrerted a
telescoped, high sulphidation,primaryrnineralassernblage, with theadditionofabundantpyriteandvariable
amountsof digenite,covellite,enargite,chalcopyriteand bomite,representing a signicantincreasein S,
Fe, As and Cu. There is evidenceto suggestthat the coppergradesfollorvingthis lirstphaseof intense
quartz-sericitealterationlargelyreflectthe distributiorrirhcritctl liorlr lhc intcnscrolrssicphaservith rare
remobilisationand the adrlitionof no nrtrethan 0.3 to 0.5% Cu- Dextral-nornral, north-castoricrrtcd,
distributivefaulting,e.9.,the EstanquesBlancosand PortezueloSystenrs, producele ecltelon,progressrve
"southblockdown" displacement, finally truncatingthe ore body to thesouth.while exposngit closeto lhe
rootsofthe mineralisedsystemto the north,in the directionofthe RT mine. Thiswas followedby uplifl and
sinistraldisplacementalong the West Fissurejuxtaposingthe barrenblock on its rvestemside wilh the
orebodyto the east. Fnallya sinistral-normal north-westfault systemrvasreactivatedto produceweak
segmentation of both the hypogenemineralisation and the WestFissure,while increasingthe permeability
that influencedthe subsequnt supergene processes.
Betweenl9 and l5 Ma the depositwas subjectedto at leasttwo leaching,oxidisinglnd enrichnrertevenls.
The firstgenerated a thick,stronglyenrichedblanketwith gradesaveraging2 to l7n Cu. which waslocussed
by the late and waning stagequartz sericiticalterationthat producednou-reactiverocks with abuntlant
pyrite. This blanketextended,althoughrelativelythinly developed,beyo|ldthe quirfz-sericiticzone,into
more teactivesectorsto the eastand north with lesserpyrite and predonrinantly early polassicaltera(iou.
Subsequent tectonicuplift loweredthe meteoricwater table,oxidising the enrchedblanketto produce
hematiticleachedremnantsin the quartz-sericite rich lithologies,and high graclecoppersulphatesn the
potassicalteration of the near surface in the easternand nothem sectors,which were th target of early
miningactivilyat Chuquicamata. Lowgraderemnantsofthisoxidecapmaystill beobserverjin thenorthem
partofthe presentpit. The leaching,which originatedin the phenomenon ofsuddendorvnwardfluctuation
ofthe meteoricwatertable,alsoproducedexoticmineralisation thatwasprincipallytranspofedsoulhfiom
the main deposit through a palaeo-channelto form the Mina Sur orebody.
