Training and Attitudes Toward School Use. Computers in the Schools, 31(3), 233-250.

INTRODUCTION
Research Questions (if research questions are not specifically mentioned, what
is the theoretical background or overarching theme):
The research is looking for answers to three questions.
1) How much will training process impact to school administrators iPad usage for their
administrative tasks and personal organizations when they are in professional duties?
2) How much will training process affect school administrators beliefs in regards to
how teachers should use iPads in classrooms?
3) How many differences will be in school administrators survey responses based on
independent variables such as gender, age, years of experience in school
administration and education, highest degree attained, school classification, or school
size?
Purpose of the research:
There are many studies regarding how to implement iPads in school settings, but
there is not enough research about how much iPad training will affect school
administrators to use IPads for their tasks and personal organization when they are in
duty. On the other hand, there is no research how much IPad training will impact
school administrators beliefs regarding using iPads in the classroom. The purpose of
the research is to determine potential impact in this area.

METHODOLOGY

What is the methodology for the research or approach used to understand the
issue? Provide information regarding the following:

Participants:
51 school administrators between 120 administrators from a southwestern state
public charter school voluntarily participated in this research. All of 51
administrators owned iPads and use them for their professional duties. The
majority of participants were from K-12 school settings.
Procedures: Pre-survey, a training session, on-going support, and post-
survey.

Data Collection Methods/Data Source: Pre-survey was given school

administrators at the beginning of the research. Then, the administrators
participated a training session about how to use iPads effectively for
administrative tasks and personal organization. They also learned about
available resources. The researchers provided on-going support via email and
phone. At the end of the research, a post-survey was given to the
administrators. Survey results used as data source.

Data Analysis: Pearson r coefficient used to find the linear relationship

between variables. P-Value, t-test, ANOVA used for data analysis. Additionally,
statistically, significance was checked to determine how much we can trust the
data.
RESULTS

Findings or Results (or main points of the article):

The majority of survey participants are elementary, middle school, and high school
administrators. Almost half of the school administrators have only bachelors degree,
and other administrators have bachelors degree and masters degree. The majority of
the administrators use iPads for work relative duties. The most used iPad application
is Eduphoria. The most of the administrators prefer to use iPads due to increasing
administrator mobility. After iPad training, the administrator improved their iPad usage
skills based on the survey responses. There will be a slight difference between pre-
survey and post-survey regarding how much school administrators want to see their
teachers use iPads in the classroom. The administrators wanted to see their teachers
will use iPad more in classrooms.
DISCUSSIONS

Conclusions/Implications (for your profession):

Im teaching computer classes, and I use iPad and Apple TV while teaching. I use
iPad for presentation and Apple TV to mirror my presentation on iPad on a projection
screen. Before I start to use iPad, I was trying to write programming codes on white
boards. It was taking a long time, and I was having difficulty to engage my students.
On the other hand, it was hard for my students to understand due to long wait time to
finish my handwriting on the board. It was easy to engage my students after I started
to use iPad while teaching. While teaching, I was tapping the screen, and the codes
were appearing row by row. Adding some pictures or hints also helped to engage
students. I think using iPad helps to increase instruction quality in the classroom. I can
use iPad effectively in my classroom because I got necessary training before I started
to use iPad and Apple TV. I recommended using same technology other teachers in
their classrooms. Some of them couldnt make it work due to technical difficulties.
After a while, we realized that the teachers did not know how to use iPads, so they
gave up using iPads in their classrooms. I think all teachers should be trained
appropriately before they start to use iPads in the classroom.
REFLECTIONS

Students Reflections (changes to your understanding; implications for your

school/work):
School administrators are instructional and technology leaders that other teachers
follow their lead. Whenever a teacher needs help regarding how to use technology,
the expectation will be school administrator should involve the situation and solve the
problem. The administrator should teach the teachers how to use the technology
appropriately and more efficiently in the classroom. Whenever a teacher couldnt get
help, I dont think the teacher continues to use the technology. The teacher will give
up because the administrator couldnt follow up due to lack of training about using the
technology. When I started to teach years ago, I was not trying to implement using
technology while teaching. I was just giving a regular lecture while teaching. None of
my administrators encouraged me to use technology in my classroom. After I had
moved to another school, my administrators guided me regarding how I can use
technology in my classroom to provide high-quality instruction. The administrators also
suggested new technology devices purchase for my classroom if I would use them
while teaching. I believe using iPads, and other similar technologies help students
engaged in the lesson and increase student understanding.
