you install the course.
The entire Classical Piano Course is contained on the CD Rom.
To install Classical Piano Course on your computer, insert the CD Rom
into the CD drive and click on "Install" on the start-up screen (fig. 1).

From here on, follow the programs installation instructions.

NAVIGATION
SCREENS
Once you have completed the program installation, each time you insert
the CD Rom into the drive, the start-up screen (fig. 2) will tell you to
"Run"; now the homepage should appear :

N.B" : if your Classical Piano Course has already been used and the CD
Rom is already in the drive, go to the Windows "Start" Menu and select
the Musicalis file to start-up the program.

4
The Classical Piano Course CD Rom includes 4 different screens:

CONTENTS: Presents a list of the music pieces

included in the CD-Rom.

WORKSHOP: features an impressive number of

interactive functions to listen, play, and record
yourself: this is probably where you will spend most
of your time.

ADVICE: contains tips for practising the piece.

COMPOSERS: biographies at composers whose

pieces are included in the course.

These different screens and functions are described

in detail in the following pages.

5
CONTENTS

In this summary of contents, access any piece by simply clicking on the mouse.
You can also preview any piece by holding the cursor above its title.

You can return to the contents at any time by clicking on the

<contents> button on the top right of your screen.

SCROLL MENUS

TUNES : access the pieces included in the course

THEORY : access work tips

COMPOSERS : access the composers biographies whose works are

included in the course

6
NAVIGATION BUTTONS

Each screen contains navigation buttons on the top right which give
permanent access to the following functions:

HOME: return to the homepage.

QUIT: quits the program.

7
COMPLEMENTARY FUNCTION BUTTONS

These buttons are displayed together on the vertical panel on the left.
All the buttons are not active at all times.

PRINT: print the current page.

When you choose to print a score, a preview window is opened so
you can consult the score before printing it. Click on the <Print> button
on the top right of the screen to open the corresponding dialogue box
and launch the printing.

TOOL BOX: configure the MIDI ports on your sound card.

ADVICE: access teaching advice and techniques without quitting the

Workshop.

GLOSSARY: Accessible at any time, this glossary regroups all the

theoretical notions included in the course.

8
WORKSHOP

The Workshop screen is the heart of the Classical Piano Course. This is
where you can listen to the instrumental exercises and pieces (in Audio
Mp3 and MIDI modes), practice different techniques (in bar sections, by
changing tempo, by excluding one hand, etc.), record yourself and
compare your version to the "teachers" in the Classical Piano Course.
PRESENTATION

The main part of the screen

contains the actual workshop.
This includes:

o Display, scrolling, and

synchronisation of the musical
score in real time.
o Fingering display on the
keyboard.

On the lower screen, you will find the command panel, which resembles
the buttons on a tape recorder.

The listening and display options appear at the centre of the screen
(under the score).

9
MIDI PORT SELECTION

The first time you start-up the Workshop, the following Dialog box appears:

You must fill-in the two lines to make this Workshop function properly.

Output: This box defines the source of the sound that you hear.
There are generally three options:

-Internal FM synthesiser (Internal FM synth): if you choose this mode,

your computers sound card will produce the sound you hear. The FM
synthesiser does not produce high quality sound. Therefore, try to avoid
this option unless you have no other available option.

10
Internal Wavetable Synthesiser (Internal WaveTable Synth): if you
choose this mode, your computer's sound card produces the sound you
hear. With WaveTable synthesis, you generally obtain good quality
sound. This is the option you should choose if your master keyboard
does not contain an internal synthesiser.

External (out) MIDI port (Midi Out or MPU-401): your output synthesiser
or expander produces the sound you hear in this mode. This option is
recommended for those using a digital piano, synthesiser or expander.

Input: this box defines the connection between your MIDI keyboard
(electronic piano, synthesiser, etc.) and the computer. Use the right
button to scroll the list of available ports. In general, you only have one
entry port (usually called MIDI In, but the name can vary according to
various sound card makers).

When you have chosen your ports, click on OK.

If you encounter problems (no sound, etc.) you can change the MIDI
ports at any time by clicking on the "Tool Box" button in the function
panel on the left of the screen.

11
THE COMMAND PANEL

This panel resembles the buttons on a tape recorder and allows you to
perform the following:

The return to the start button: this button automatically returns

you to the beginning of the piece.

N.B.: when the "loop" function is active, one click on this button returns
you to the beginning of the loop (left arrow). Click a second time to return
to the beginning of the piece.
If you de-activate the "loop" function, the left and right locator positions
remain memorised. This is very handy for accessing a particular section in
the piece, without necessarily using the "loop" function.

The back button: this button re-positions the cursor back one bar.

The pause button: this button interrupts the current play or record
functions.

The play button: this key plays the score which is displayed
on-screen.

12
The forward button: this button repositions the cursor forward one bar.

The record button: this button starts recording the students track.
This is displayed below the teachers track when you press Stop.

The tempo indicator includes two functions:

- Indicates the current tempo.
- Allows you to vary the tempo to practise at different speeds (in
MIDI only); for example, when you need to view the fingerings displayed
on the keyboard.
To change the tempo, select the tempo with the mouse and enter a new one.

N.B. As long as you do not modify the tempo, the piece is read according
to the Tempo track of the original file and its possible variations. As soon
as you select a new tempo, the piece is read according to this new
tempo, without variations. You can return to the original version in the
MIDI file by going through Audio mode before returning to MIDI mode,
or by clicking on the Reset button.

13
Loop indicators. These options allow you to select
bars and "loop" them so you can work on a particular passage.

The left button activates or de-activates the loop mode.

The two subsequent zones indicate the beginning (left locator) and end
(right locator) of the loop (using bar numbers).
To adjust these values:
- click with the left button on the mouse: the value increases 1 unit.
- click with the right button on the mouse: the value diminishes 1 unit.
- SHIFT + click with the left button on the mouse: the value increases 10
units.
- SHIFT + click with the right button on the mouse: the value diminishes
10 units

NB : The loops starting value cannot exceed its end value.

Reset or " panic " button: This button allows you to restart the
provider in its initial configuration.

14
MODES

AUDIO mode: in this mode you can listen to real instruments recorded in
high definition audiodigital format. Although this mode is not as
flexible as the MIDI mode, it allows you to listen to the piece in optimal
conditions and to play accompanied by professional musicians! This
mode also allows users with an average-quality sound card to listen to
the piece as it should be played.
You cannot adjust the tempo or use the loop function in this mode.
However, all the other functions are available.

MIDI mode: in this mode, the sound is emitted from your sound card or
synthesiser. The resemblance to real instruments completely depends on
the quality of your material. You can access all the functions in this
mode.

Tip : While youre reading the piece, if you wish to change between
AUDIO and MIDI listening modes, (without returning to the beginning
of the piece), click directly on the corresponding box in the matrix. Play
will stop, but when you click on the Play button in the command
panel, you will return to exactly the same place you left. However, if you
click in the Stop button in the command panel before changing
modes, the piece will automatically start playing from the beginning.

15
The student button : once youve recorded yourself, you hear
your version when this button is pressed down.

The teacher button : when this button is pressed down you

hear the original version.

You can listen alternatively to your version or the teachers to hear your
mistakes.

Hide hands: this is one of the important functions in the

Workshop. It allows you to silence one hand so you can
listen closely to the other one. Click on the hand you wish to "mute"; its
corresponding icon will feature a red X figure above it, meaning that it
is muted. Re-click on the icon to restore the sound.

16
RECORDING YOURSELF

After you have listened to a piece, consulted the work tips, the
theory files, and read the entire score ... or in sections using different
tempi - you will probably want to record yourself.

Recording yourself using the Classical Piano Course is a powerful

tool which is also easy to use: all you have to do is press the
"Record" button on the command panel and, after 2 preliminary
count-down bars, you're on! With the unique display mode you can
follow the score which scrolls in real time, without delays or
interruptions .
You can now compare your performance with the "teachers": scroll
down the scores side by side, alternate listening between each version,
and start again as often as you want!

At any time you can also re-start the provider in its initial configuration
by pressing "Reset" or "Panic" on the command panel.

17
ADVICE FILES

This screen offers work tips for the chosen workshop.

This allows you to seek advice without having to quit your practice session.

To open the "Advice" window, click on this icon in the vertical

panel on the right.

18
THE GLOSSARY

To access the Glossary of musical terms, click on the "Glossary" icon

in the function panel on the left.
Click on a heading in the list on the left to display the corresponding file.
Use available menus and options to customise the display.
You can change pages by choosing from the list on the left or by selecting
<Previous> or <Forward>.
Click on <Print> to print the current page.

To quit the Glossary, click on the "close" symbol X on the top right of your
screen.
