Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Periodic Behavior
Content Area: Chemistry
Grade Level(s): 9-12
Content Standard Addressed:
SC1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the use of the modern atomic theory
and periodic law to explain the characteristics of atoms and elements. F) Use the periodic table as a
model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the
outermost energy level of atoms (i.e. including atomic radii, ionization energy, and
electronegativity).

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce
creative artifacts and make meaningful experiences for themselves and others. Students:
a. plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for
their intellectual or creative pursuits.
b. evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility, and relevance of information, media, data, or
other resources.
c. curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create
collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft Office

Lesson idea implementation:
I will be introducing the topic of the four main periodic table trends and their relationships
with the periodic table of elements by using the Microsoft Office basic productivity tool. I will
introduce the narrated PowerPoint in a pre-training introductory form the night before it is
introduced in class so the students will be familiar with the topic before it is thoroughly discussed.
The students will view the 6-minute video about the periodic trends and complete the at-home
assignment that requires them to create their own version of a narrated PowerPoint (5 slide max)
that features the element they were assigned at the beginning of the year and discusses its
relationship with the four trends. Then, they will bring their presentations to class and present it to

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
their classmates following the classs discussion on the topic. Overall, it will take one class period
and approximately an hour total at home.
Student learning will be assessed based on the creation and completion of the at-home
narrated presentation and by the end of all presentations, each student should be able to
acknowledge the four main periodic table trends and their application to various elements that will
be presented by their peers. The lesson will be concluded with a class vote of the best mole
experiment with the highest environmental impact that will be completed collectively during the
next class. Student learning will be extended to a higher level of learning by instructing the students
to submit their original work to a website that is shared amongst the schools chemistry classes. On
the website, students can leave and receive comments from others about their presentations. (LoTi
